Chapter 9: The Daughter Vanessa Never Told Me About

I couldn't move.

Vanessa's name was printed on the adoption certificate.

Not as a guardian.

Not as an adoptive parent.

As the person who had originally surrendered the child.

I read the document again.

Then I looked at Margaret.

"You're telling me my wife gave Brittany a child?""

Margaret shook her head.

"No. I'm telling you that the document says Vanessa was listed as the child's birth mother. But I cannot verify that the record is authentic.""

Reynolds examined the paperwork.

"The dates don't make sense," he said.

"Why?""

"Because this document predates the hospital incident by several years. If it's legitimate, it changes everything we thought we knew.""

I felt sick.

Vanessa had never mentioned another pregnancy.

Never mentioned giving birth to another child.

Never mentioned Brittany having any claim to her.

I thought about all the nights we had spent talking about our future.

All the promises.

All the photographs on our bedroom wall.

How could she have hidden something this enormous?

I picked up the certificate.

"Who created this?""

Margaret looked troubled.

"I don't know. But Vanessa asked me about it before she died.""

"What did she say?""

"She believed someone had altered the original records.""

Reynolds immediately took photographs of the document.

"We need a forensic examination.""

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

It was Detective Bennett.

"Mr. Mitchell, are you with Richard Reynolds?""

"Yes.""

"We need both of you at the station. We've located a witness connected to the Collins guardianship case.""

"Who?""

There was a pause.

"A woman who claims she was present when Brittany first took custody of Sophie.""

I looked at Reynolds.

"We're coming.""

At the station, Detective Bennett introduced us to an older woman named Patricia Wells.

She had worked as a family court clerk more than a decade earlier.

She looked nervous.

"I didn't know this would come back after all these years," she said.

Detective Bennett placed a photograph of Brittany on the table.

"Do you recognize her?""

Patricia nodded.

"Yes.""

"Tell us what you remember.""

Patricia folded her hands.

"She came to the courthouse with a little girl. She said the child was hers, but the paperwork was incomplete.""

"Was the child Sophie?""

"I believe so.""

"Did she have custody?""

"Not at first. She was trying to obtain it.""

Patricia looked at me.

"Then another woman appeared. Vanessa.""

My chest tightened.

"What did she do?""

"She brought documents proving that the child had been placed under her temporary care. She said Brittany was not telling the truth about the child's history.""

"What happened next?""

Patricia hesitated.

"There was a private meeting. I wasn't supposed to be involved, but I overheard part of it.""

Detective Bennett leaned forward.

"What did you hear?""

Patricia looked at me.

"Vanessa told Brittany that she would never allow her to take another child away.""

My throat tightened.

"Another child?""

Patricia nodded.

"She said Brittany had already taken one.""

The room fell silent.

Reynolds slowly closed his notebook.

"Did Vanessa identify the other child?""

Patricia shook her head.

"No. But Brittany became furious. She said Vanessa had no right to keep what belonged to her.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"What happened to the little girl?""

"That's what I never found out.""

Detective Bennett thanked Patricia and arranged for her statement to be formally recorded.

Then she turned to us.

"We have also obtained information from the former residential facility. There is a possible match for Sophie under a different name.""

"Where is she?"" I asked.

"We're verifying her current identity and location.""

"Is she safe?""

"We don't know yet.""

I looked at Reynolds.

"We need to find her.""

He nodded.

On the drive home, neither of us spoke.

I kept thinking about Vanessa.

If she had hidden another child, why?

If she had protected Sophie, why hadn't she told me?

And why did Brittany believe Kayla belonged to her?

When I reached home, Denise was waiting in the kitchen.

Kayla was upstairs.

She had spent the afternoon making paper crowns.

I put the documents on the table.

Denise read the adoption certificate.

Her eyes widened.

"Darius, what is this?""

"I don't know anymore.""

She looked at me carefully.

"Are you sure you want to keep digging?""

I stared at her.

"What do you mean?""

"Vanessa loved you. Maybe she had reasons for keeping things from you.""

I shook my head.

"Secrets don't protect children forever.""

Denise looked down.

Then she whispered, "There was something Vanessa told me the week before she died.""

I froze.

"What?""

Denise's hands began trembling.

"She said if anything happened to her, I should make sure Kayla never went looking for her birth records.""

I stared at my sister.

"Why didn't you tell me that?""

"Because she made me promise.""

"Denise, my daughter is at the center of this. I need the truth.""

Denise wiped her eyes.

"Vanessa said Kayla wasn't the only child she had protected. She said there was another little girl who had been taken from the family before Kayla was born.""

"Who?""

"I don't know. She never gave me a name.""

I sat down.

"Did she mention Brittany?""

Denise nodded.

"She said Brittany had been searching for something that belonged to her.""

"What?""

"Her daughter.""

The words hung between us.

I thought about the adoption certificate.

The hospital records.

The two newborns.

The custody petition.

And then I understood something.

Brittany might not have been trying to steal Kayla's inheritance because she wanted money.

She might have believed Kayla was her biological child.

But if that were true, why had Vanessa raised her?

And why had Brittany never told me?

My phone vibrated.

A message from Detective Bennett.

*We located a woman believed to be Sophie Collins. She has agreed to speak with investigators.*

Another message followed.

*She has identified Brittany Collins as her biological mother.*

I stared at the screen.

Then a third message arrived.

*There is a complication. Sophie claims Brittany had another daughter.*

My heart stopped.

I typed back.

*Who?*

The reply came almost immediately.

*She believes the other daughter is Kayla.*

I dropped the phone onto the table.

Denise covered her mouth.

Upstairs, Kayla began singing to herself.

A little song about princesses and purple crowns.

I looked toward the staircase.

My daughter.

The child I had raised.

The child I had held the night she was born.

The child Vanessa had loved with every breath she had.

Could she really be Brittany's biological daughter?

Before I could process it, the doorbell rang.

I checked the security camera.

A young woman stood on the porch.

She had dark hair, tired eyes, and a small crescent-shaped birthmark near her left shoulder.

She was holding a photograph.

I opened the door cautiously.

"Can I help you?""

The woman looked at me.

Then she looked past me toward the staircase.

"My name is Sophie Collins," she whispered.

My heart began pounding.

"How can I help you?""

She held out the photograph.

It showed two newborn babies.

One was Kayla.

The other was Sophie.

Then she said:

"Your wife didn't steal me from Brittany, Mr. Mitchell. She saved me from her.""

I stared at the photograph.

Sophie began crying.

"And there's something else you need to know. Brittany isn't coming after Kayla because she wants her money.""

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

"Then why?""

May you like

Sophie looked toward the staircase.

"Because she believes Kayla is the daughter Vanessa stole from her.""
