Chapter 4: The Little Girl Who Disappeared

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Kayla sitting on that bathroom stool, her little hands gripping the edge while Brittany shaved away the curls her mother had loved.

But now there was another child in my thoughts.

Sophie.

A little girl who had disappeared from Vanessa's family records years before I ever met Brittany.

At 7:15 the following morning, I was back in Richard Reynolds' office.

He had already placed three folders on his desk.

"Before we begin," he said, "I want you to understand something. We have suspicions, not conclusions. We need evidence.""

I pulled out the chair.

"Then show me everything.""

Reynolds opened the first folder.

It contained a photograph of a little girl with dark hair and a missing front tooth. She was holding a pink birthday cake, smiling at whoever had taken the picture.

"This is Sophie Collins," he explained.

"Olivia's daughter.""

I studied her face.

"How old was she when her mother died?""

"Five.""

"And what happened afterward?""

"Vanessa became involved in arranging her care. But there was a dispute over guardianship.""

He placed another document beside the photograph.

Brittany's name appeared on it.

I leaned forward.

"She was Sophie's guardian?""

"Temporarily. The court appointed her during the initial investigation into Olivia's estate. Vanessa challenged that arrangement.""

"Why?""

"She believed Brittany was attempting to gain control of Sophie's inheritance.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did she succeed?""

Reynolds opened the second folder.

"No. The court eventually transferred Sophie into another placement. But shortly afterward, the child disappeared from the records available to Vanessa.""

"Disappeared how?""

"Her school enrollment changed. Her medical records were transferred. The new guardian's address was listed as confidential.""

"Who was the guardian?""

Reynolds hesitated.

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

I pushed my chair backward.

"How can a child simply disappear?""

"She didn't disappear from the world, Mr. Mitchell. She disappeared from the records Vanessa could access.""

That distinction didn't make me feel any better.

Reynolds continued.

"Vanessa hired a private investigator shortly before her death. She wanted to know where Sophie was and whether the trust had been properly administered.""

"Did they find her?""

He shook his head.

"Not conclusively.""

I looked at the photograph again.

Sophie couldn't have been more than a year older than Kayla.

"Why would Brittany come after Kayla?""

Reynolds closed the folder.

"That is the question we need answered.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Brittany.

*Brittany:* I know you've been talking to Richard. Stop digging into things that don't concern you.

I showed Reynolds.

He read it carefully.

"She knows we're investigating.""

"She probably knows everything.""

"Then we need to be cautious.""

I called the trust administrator while Reynolds listened. We confirmed that Kayla's account had been placed under additional review and that no changes could be made without independent authorization.

Then Reynolds gave me another piece of advice.

"Keep your daughter away from Brittany until the investigation is complete. And don't allow anyone to collect her from school without your direct permission.""

I nodded.

I had already made those arrangements.

When I returned home that afternoon, I found Kayla sitting at the dining table with my sister, Denise.

Denise had driven three hours to help us.

She was the only person outside my immediate family who had known Vanessa well enough to understand what we had lost.

"Hey, little sunshine," she said when she saw me.

Kayla smiled.

"Daddy bought me a purple crown.""

I laughed.

"I did promise.""

Denise glanced at my face.

"Can we talk?""

I followed her into the kitchen.

She lowered her voice.

"What happened with Brittany?""

I told her everything.

The haircut.

The police report.

The letter.

The photograph.

And Sophie.

When I finished, Denise pressed a hand against her mouth.

"Oh, Darius.""

"You know something?""

She looked toward Kayla.

Then back at me.

"Vanessa told me about Brittany once.""

"When?""

"Before she died. She called me crying.""

I froze.

"What did she say?""

Denise pulled out a chair.

"She said she was afraid someone was trying to get close to your family for the wrong reasons.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Vanessa begged me not to. She said she didn't have enough proof, and she didn't want to ruin your marriage before it even started.""

My chest tightened.

"Was she talking about Brittany?""

Denise nodded.

"She mentioned the name Collins. She said that woman had been involved in something terrible involving Olivia's daughter.""

I sat down.

"Did she say what?""

Denise shook her head.

"Only that she had found something in an old storage unit. She was going to give it to Richard Reynolds.""

I stared at her.

"What storage unit?""

"She never told me the number.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Kayla called from the dining room.

"Daddy?""

I stood immediately.

"Coming, sweetheart.""

She was holding a sheet of paper.

"I drew something.""

It was a picture of our house.

There were three people standing outside.

Me.

Kayla.

And Brittany.

But Brittany had a large red X drawn across her face.

My throat tightened.

"Can you tell me about this picture?""

Kayla shrugged.

"That's when she was mad.""

"When was she mad, baby?""

"Before you came home.""

I knelt beside her.

"What happened?""

Kayla looked down at her drawing.

"She said if I told you about the hair, she would make you send me away.""

Denise gasped.

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

"She said that?""

Kayla nodded.

"She said you would choose your wife because wives are more important than little girls.""

I held her hands.

"Listen carefully. Nobody can make me send you away. Nobody.""

Kayla's eyes filled with tears.

"Promise?""

"I promise.""

She leaned forward and hugged me.

Then she whispered something else.

"There's another thing.""

I waited.

"She told me Mommy wasn't really dead.""

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

"What?""

Kayla looked frightened.

"She said Mommy went away because she didn't want me anymore.""

I closed my eyes.

Brittany had crossed a line I couldn't even begin to forgive.

I pulled Kayla against me.

"Your mommy loved you more than anything in this world. She didn't leave because she wanted to. She died, sweetheart. And I am so sorry you had to hear something so cruel.""

Kayla started crying.

I held her until her breathing settled.

That evening, I called Reynolds again and told him about the threat involving Kayla.

His voice became serious.

"That changes things. We need to add that statement to the investigation.""

After the call, Denise helped Kayla get ready for bed.

I remained downstairs, looking through the photograph of Sophie.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A young woman's voice came through.

"Is this Darius Mitchell?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Hannah. I'm calling because I used to work at a residential care center where Sophie Collins stayed.""

My heart started racing.

"Do you know where she is?""

There was a long pause.

Then Hannah whispered:

"I think Brittany knows where she is. And I think she's been lying about what happened to her.""

"Can you meet me?""

"Yes. But there's something you need to understand first.""

"What?""

Hannah's voice cracked.

May you like

"Sophie wasn't the only child Brittany tried to control.""

The line went dead.
