Chapter 8: The Truth About Kayla's Birth

The room seemed to shrink around me.

Kayla had been born six years earlier.

Vanessa had died three years ago.

And Brittany had apparently been involved in something surrounding my daughter's birth long before she entered my life.

I looked at Reynolds.

"Tell me exactly what we're seeing.""

He paused the video and enlarged the hospital waiting-room image.

Brittany was holding a newborn wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.

Vanessa stood several feet away, arguing with someone outside the camera's view.

"Do you recognize the blanket?"" Reynolds asked.

I shook my head.

"Look at the hospital bracelet.""

The image was blurry, but the number was partially visible.

The forensic specialist had already compared it with the archived hospital records.

The bracelet belonged to a baby registered under Olivia Collins' name.

My heart began pounding.

"Olivia was alive when Kayla was born?""

"Yes. She died several hours later.""

I stared at the screen.

"Then who was the baby?""

Reynolds opened another document.

"According to the hospital's original records, Olivia delivered twins.""

I couldn't speak.

"Twins?""

"Yes. Two girls. One was registered as Sophie. The other was initially registered under a temporary name.""

He turned the document toward me.

The second child's name had been amended after the delivery.

Kayla.

My daughter's name.

I felt as though someone had punched me in the chest.

"You're telling me Kayla was Olivia's biological daughter?""

"That's what the original record suggests.""

I stood up.

"No. Vanessa gave birth to Kayla. I was there.""

Reynolds nodded.

"I understand.""

"I held my daughter. I watched Vanessa deliver her.""

He remained quiet.

I paced across the office.

There had to be an explanation.

Vanessa had never given me any reason to doubt that Kayla was our biological child.

She had breastfed her.

She had spent nights awake with her.

She had carried her through every fever and every nightmare.

I remembered Kayla's first steps.

Her first words.

The little hand that used to reach for Vanessa whenever she entered a room.

Nothing about those memories felt false.

"Why would Vanessa put another child's name on the record?"" I asked.

"We don't know yet. But the video suggests she was involved in protecting that child from Brittany.""

"Protecting her from what?""

Reynolds opened the final document.

It was an old hospital incident report.

There had been confusion surrounding the two newborns following Olivia's emergency delivery.

The hospital had temporarily separated the babies while medical staff treated their mother.

A nurse had later reported concerns about unauthorized visitors entering the neonatal area.

Brittany's name appeared in the visitor log.

I stared at it.

"Was she working there?""

"No. She had no authorization to handle either child.""

"Then why was she allowed inside?""

"That's another question the authorities are investigating.""

I pressed my palms against the desk.

"Where does Vanessa fit into this?""

Reynolds looked at the video again.

"She may have discovered that Brittany was attempting to take control of one of the newborns. The documents suggest Vanessa intervened.""

"Intervened how?""

"By taking responsibility for a child who otherwise might have been placed under Brittany's guardianship.""

I thought about the custody petition.

The trust.

The threats.

The haircut.

Everything was connected.

But there was still one question.

"Why did Vanessa tell me Kayla was our biological daughter?""

Reynolds didn't answer.

Instead, he said, "We need to speak with the hospital's former records director. She retired several years ago, but her name appears on the original report.""

We arranged a meeting for that afternoon.

Her name was Margaret Ellis.

She lived in a quiet neighborhood outside town.

When we arrived, she was waiting on her front porch.

She looked at the photograph of Vanessa and immediately began crying.

"I wondered when someone would finally come asking.""

I stepped forward.

"Mrs. Ellis, I need to know what happened the day my daughter was born.""

She invited us inside.

For nearly an hour, she explained the hospital's investigation.

Olivia had delivered twins.

One baby required immediate medical attention.

The other was healthy.

During the emergency, Brittany had entered the neonatal unit claiming to be an authorized family representative.

She wasn't.

A nurse caught her attempting to remove a baby from the monitored area.

The incident was reported.

But before the hospital could complete its internal review, Olivia died.

Vanessa arrived later that evening.

She was Olivia's sister.

She had been told that both babies needed temporary placement while the hospital and authorities established their legal status.

But Brittany was already making inquiries about the children's inheritance.

"She wanted to become their guardian?"" I asked.

Margaret nodded.

"She claimed she had promised Olivia she would raise the girls.""

"Was that true?""

"I don't believe so.""

Margaret took a breath.

"Vanessa discovered that Brittany had been involved in financial disputes surrounding Olivia's estate. She feared that the children would be separated and their inheritance misused.""

I looked at Reynolds.

"And Kayla?""

Margaret looked directly at me.

"Vanessa took one of the babies home under a temporary protective arrangement. She told the authorities she would cooperate with every legal requirement.""

"Which baby?""

Margaret opened a drawer and removed an old photograph.

It showed two newborns lying side by side.

One had a small birthmark near her left shoulder.

The other had a tiny crescent-shaped mark near her right ear.

I remembered Kayla's birthmark.

A small crescent near her right ear.

My stomach tightened.

"That's Kayla.""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Then who was the other baby?""

"Sophie.""

The silence was unbearable.

"Where did Sophie go?""

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"Vanessa tried to keep both girls together. But the legal process became complicated. One child remained in the hospital's care, while the other was placed with Vanessa.""

I swallowed.

"And Brittany?""

"She fought for custody. She claimed she had a special relationship with the children.""

I remembered the custody petition.

"Did she ever get either of them?""

Margaret shook her head.

"Not legally, as far as I know.""

I stood up.

"Then how did she get close to Kayla?""

Margaret looked at Reynolds.

Then she said something that changed everything.

"Because she knew Vanessa was afraid. And she used that fear to keep the family silent.""

I stared at her.

"Afraid of what?""

Margaret reached for another folder.

"Before Vanessa died, she came to see me. She said she had discovered something about Brittany's identity.""

She opened the folder.

Inside was a copy of an old adoption certificate.

The adoptive mother's name was Brittany Collins.

The child's name was Sophie Collins.

But the birth mother's name was not Olivia.

It was a name I had never heard before.

Margaret pointed to it.

"According to this document, Sophie wasn't Olivia's biological daughter.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Then who was her mother?""

Margaret answered quietly.

"Brittany.""

I stared at the document.

The woman who had shaved my daughter's hair.

The woman who had demanded access to her inheritance.

The woman who had been fighting for custody before we ever met.

She was apparently Sophie's biological mother.

But that still didn't explain why Vanessa had raised Kayla.

And it didn't explain why Brittany had spent years searching for her.

Reynolds looked at the next page.

His expression changed.

"Darius.""

"What?""

He pointed to the adoption certificate.

There was a second name listed under the child's original birth details.

A name that made my entire body go cold.

*Vanessa Mitchell.*
