Chapter 16: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I stared at Rachel’s message until the screen dimmed.

Do not believe what the video shows.

A warning.

The exact kind of warning someone gives when they know they are in trouble.

I looked at Marcus.

Then Daniel.

Neither of them spoke.

Because they were waiting for me to decide what to believe.

That was the hardest part.

For weeks, I thought I was searching for the truth.

But every truth came with another shadow behind it.

I typed back:

“Explain.””

The message showed as delivered.

No response.

I typed again.

“Rachel, answer me.””

Nothing.

My hands shook.

The woman who had guided me through everything had suddenly become the person I questioned most.

Daniel looked at me.

“She knew about the video.””

I looked up.

“You knew?””

He nodded slowly.

“Your mother told me Rachel was involved.””

My heart tightened.

“Involved how?””

He looked at the screen.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course you don’t.””

He accepted it.

“You have every right to be angry.””

I turned toward the camera.

My mother’s final warning echoed.

The person who helped David access your accounts was someone you trust.

Rachel.

But why would Rachel help him?

She was the one who exposed him.

The one who sent me the documents.

The one who told me to leave.

Unless…

Unless everything had been planned.

Marcus broke the silence.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“You need to consider something.””

“What?””

“Your mother was careful.””

I nodded.

“She was.””

“She wouldn’t leave evidence that could easily be misunderstood.””

My eyes moved back to the camera.

“You think the video was incomplete.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your mother knew David. She knew how he manipulated situations.””

“So?””

“So she would have expected him to use that recording against her.””

I stared at the screen.

The file.

The name.

The timing.

Something felt wrong.

My phone suddenly rang.

Rachel.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

“Why did you lie to me?””

There was silence.

Then Rachel spoke.

“Because I was afraid you would react exactly like this.””

My anger rose.

“You let me believe you were helping me while my mother’s video says you betrayed me.””

“I didn’t betray you.””

“Then explain.””

Rachel sighed.

“I can’t explain over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because someone is listening.””

I froze.

I looked around the underground room.

The old walls.

The hidden documents.

“Who?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“David.””

My father.

“He knows you found the room.””

“How?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because he knew about this room before you did.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

Rachel answered:

“Because I was the one who helped your mother hide it.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then why did my mother say your name?””

Rachel went quiet.

When she spoke again, her voice sounded broken.

“Because she knew you would need to question me.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She wanted you to doubt everyone.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if she knew David would try to control the story.””

I looked at the video.

My mother’s face.

Her final message.

Rachel continued.

“Emily, there is a second part to that recording.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“The file you watched was edited.””

I looked at Marcus.

He immediately understood.

“Who edited it?””

Rachel answered:

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“How do we know?””

Rachel said:

“Because I found the original.””

My breathing changed.

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“In the place David would never think to look.””

“Where?””

Rachel whispered:

“Your mother’s grave.””

The words hit me.

I couldn’t speak.

Rachel continued.

“Emily, you need to leave that house now.””

“Why?””

“Because David isn’t coming to stop you.””

A chill went through me.

“Then what is he coming for?””

Rachel answered:

“He’s coming to destroy what your mother left.””

The call ended.

Immediately, the sound of a car engine came from above.

We all froze.

Marcus turned off the lights.

Nobody moved.

Then footsteps crossed the floor upstairs.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

My father had arrived.

But he wasn’t alone.

A second set of footsteps followed.

Daniel looked at me.

His face changed.

“Who is that?””

I whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Marcus looked toward the hidden stairs.

May you like

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Yes, you do.””
