Chapter 10: The Agreement My Mother Signed

The signature on the document blurred in front of my eyes.

Margaret Carter.

My mother.

The woman who spent her entire life protecting me had signed a document that connected my future to Marcus Vale.

I couldn’t breathe.

“No,” I whispered.

Marcus watched me carefully.

“Your mother was not naive, Emily.””

I looked up.

“Then why would she sign this?””

Nobody answered.

My father looked away.

Vanessa stared at the floor.

And suddenly, the silence became louder than any confession.

I picked up the document.

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

“What is this?””

Marcus leaned against the table.

“A protection agreement.””

“That doesn’t sound like protection.””

“It was.””

I looked through the pages.

The language was complicated.

Legal words.

Financial terms.

But one sentence stood out.

“In the event of David Carter’s financial failure, all protected assets belonging to Emily Carter shall remain inaccessible to outside creditors.””

I looked at my father.

“Outside creditors.””

Marcus smiled.

“Your mother knew your father’s business was unstable.””

My father’s face tightened.

“She didn’t know everything.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“She knew enough.””

I looked between them.

“How long has this been going on?””

Nobody answered.

“Years?””

My father sat down.

“Emily…”

“How long?””

His silence told me.

Years.

I stepped back.

My entire childhood suddenly felt different.

Every family dinner.

Every vacation.

Every time my father told me everything was fine.

Was it all fake?

“I trusted you.””

My father looked at me.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to look at someone you love and realize they’ve been lying to you for years.””

His eyes filled slightly.

“I was trying to fix it.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.””

Marcus picked up the document.

“Your father made a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“You’re defending him?””

“No.””

His expression turned cold.

“I’m explaining why your mother prepared for this.””

That stopped me.

“My mother expected this?””

Marcus nodded.

“She knew David would eventually choose reputation over honesty.””

My father stood suddenly.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at him.

For the first time, I saw anger replace his fear.

“You don’t get to talk about her.””

Marcus smiled.

“Why? Because I knew her better than you did?””

The room froze.

My father looked like he had been punched.

I felt a question forming.

One I didn’t want to ask.

But I needed the answer.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Your mother came to me before she died.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“To make sure you were protected.””

My father looked furious.

“You promised you wouldn’t tell her.””

Marcus ignored him.

“She knew something was wrong.””

“What?””

He looked at the folder.

“The money disappearing. The company losses. The hidden accounts.””

I stared at my father.

“You were already stealing before she died.””

My father whispered:

“I was desperate.””

I laughed sadly.

“Desperate people ask for help.””

His eyes dropped.

“They don’t steal from their daughters.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus slowly placed another paper on the table.

“This is why I came here.””

I looked at it.

“What is that?””

“The final page of your mother’s agreement.””

I hesitated.

“What does it say?””

Marcus looked at my father.

“Read it.””

My father didn’t move.

“David.””

He looked at me.

Then slowly walked forward.

His hands shook as he turned the page.

His face changed.

“What?””

I grabbed the paper.

My eyes moved across the paragraph.

Then I saw the final condition.

My mother had written:

“If my daughter discovers evidence of financial betrayal by David Carter, control of all protected assets shall immediately transfer to Emily Carter, along with all investigative records.””

I looked up.

My mother had planned for this.

She had built a safety net around me.

Even after she was gone.

Then I noticed the date.

The agreement had been updated.

Not before she died.

After.

A week before her final hospital visit.

I looked at Marcus.

“You helped her change this.””

He didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression softened.

“For the same reason she trusted me.””

I waited.

He looked at me.

“Because your mother knew I was the only person your father couldn’t manipulate.””

My father’s face turned dark.

“You think you won.””

Marcus smiled.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I think Emily just started.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from the bank.

I opened it.

My eyes widened.

The subject line read:

“Emergency review completed: Additional accounts discovered.””

Below it was a list.

And one account name made my blood run cold.

Emily Carter Trust.

Status:

Unauthorized access detected.

I looked at my father.

He had found out.

He knew.

May you like

And then Marcus said quietly:

“The account they emptied wasn’t the only one.””
