Chapter 15: The Recording That Changed Everything

The old camera flickered.

The screen was damaged.

The image shook.

But the voices were clear.

My father’s voice.

My mother’s voice.

Twenty years ago.

I couldn’t move.

Nobody in the room moved.

The recording began.

My mother sat in what looked like the same house.

She looked tired.

But determined.

David stood across from her.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing,” my father said.

My hands tightened.

Because I recognized that tone.

The same one he used when he wanted control.

My mother answered calmly.

“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

“You’re destroying everything.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You already did that.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked away.

Marcus watched the screen.

The recording continued.

David paced.

“If people find out, the company is finished.””

My mother stared at him.

“Your company is not more important than our daughter.””

There it was.

Our daughter.

Not his.

Ours.

David lowered his voice.

“I can fix this.””

My mother laughed sadly.

“That’s what you always say.””

I felt tears forming.

Because I had heard those exact words.

I can fix this.

My father’s favorite excuse.

The video continued.

David placed papers on the table.

“What if Emily never knows?””

My body went cold.

My mother looked at him.

“She deserves the truth.””

“She’s a child.””

“She’s nineteen.””

“She needs stability.””

“She needs honesty.””

David became angry.

“You think Daniel can give her that?””

The room froze.

Daniel closed his eyes.

My mother answered:

“Daniel would never steal from her.””

The silence after that sentence was painful.

Then my father said something that made my blood run cold.

“I had no choice.””

My mother looked at him.

“Everyone who hurts someone says that.””

The recording skipped.

Then came the final part.

My mother was crying.

David stood near the door.

“If you tell her everything, you lose her.””

My mother wiped her face.

“No.””

She looked directly at him.

“You lose her.””

The screen flickered.

Then the camera angle changed.

My father walked away.

My mother looked directly at the camera.

Like she knew someone would watch this.

Like she knew I would see it.

“Emily,” she whispered.

I covered my mouth.

Hearing her voice again destroyed me.

“If you’re watching this, then I’m sorry.””

The tears came.

Not because she was gone.

Because she had spent her final days trying to protect me.

She continued.

“Your father loves you.””

I froze.

That wasn’t what I expected.

“But love does not erase choices.””

The room was silent.

“People can love you and still hurt you.””

My eyes moved to the floor.

Because that was the truth I had been fighting.

My father wasn’t a monster.

He was my father.

And he still betrayed me.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then the camera beeped.

A hidden file appeared.

One final video.

Created after my mother’s death.

The title:

“For Emily — When She Is Ready.””

My hands shook.

I pressed play.

My mother appeared again.

But this time, she looked weaker.

Sicker.

“Emily.””

She smiled.

“If you’re watching this, then you found everything.””

She paused.

“There is one thing I need you to know.””

I leaned closer.

My mother whispered:

“David did not act alone.””

The room went cold.

“What?”” I whispered.

She continued.

“The person who helped him access your accounts was someone you trust.””

My heart started racing.

Someone I trust.

Someone close.

Then my mother said the name.

A name that made Marcus step back.

A name that made Daniel go silent.

A name that I never expected.

“Rachel.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

My entire world shifted again.

Rachel.

The woman who warned me.

The woman who helped my mother.

The woman who claimed to protect me.

Could she have been part of it?

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Rachel.

“Emily, whatever you do…”

I opened it.

May you like

The second message arrived.

“Do not believe what the video shows.””
