Chapter 6: The Woman Who Remembered Everything

Darius stared at his mother as if the words had been spoken in a language he didn't understand.

“Vanessa is my what?””

Gloria gripped the arms of her chair.

“Your sister.””

Brielle slowly stood.

“The baby you said you gave away twenty-nine years ago?””

Gloria nodded.

Darius took a step backward.

“No. You said she was adopted. You said you never saw her again.””

“I believed she had been adopted.””

“Then why did you recognize her?””

Gloria's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I found her.””

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

The room went silent.

Darius let out a hollow laugh.

“Three years ago?””

Gloria lowered her head.

“I saw her at a community clinic. She was working as a nurse. I recognized a birthmark on her shoulder from the hospital photographs your father kept.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what? That your son would discover he had a sister?””

“That she would hate me!””

Darius slammed his palm against the desk.

“She has every reason to hate you!””

Brielle stepped between them.

“Darius, we need answers. Maya is still missing.””

He closed his eyes, took a breath, and looked at his mother again.

“Why is Vanessa helping Renee?””

Gloria shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Then start telling us what you do know.””

She pressed her hands together.

“When I found Vanessa, I went to see her. I told her who I was. She didn't believe me at first, but I showed her the old photographs and the hospital records I had managed to keep.””

“What did she say?”” Brielle asked.

Gloria swallowed.

“She said she had spent her entire life wondering why her biological mother had abandoned her.””

“And what did you tell her?””

“That I had been young. That I had been afraid. That I had made a mistake.””

Darius stared at her.

“Did she forgive you?””

Gloria shook her head.

“Not exactly.””

A bitter silence followed.

“Vanessa wanted answers,” Gloria continued.

“She wanted to know who arranged the adoption and where she had lived before being transferred to another facility.””

“Another facility?”” Brielle repeated.

Gloria nodded.

“That's what her records said. She was supposed to have been placed with a family through a private adoption agency, but the documents were incomplete.””

Officer Reynolds leaned forward.

“Do you have the name of the agency?””

“Renee handled the paperwork for my husband. I never dealt with the agency directly.””

“Your sister-in-law arranged the adoption?””

Gloria nodded.

“She worked in a medical office at the time. She knew people. My husband trusted her.””

Darius rubbed his forehead.

“So Renee helped arrange the first adoption, and now she's involved in another baby switch.””

“I know how it looks.””

“How it looks?”” he repeated.

“Mom, this isn't a misunderstanding anymore!””

Gloria flinched.

“I didn't know Renee was planning to switch the babies. She told me she had found a way to get a boy into our family.””

“And you agreed.””

“Yes.””

“Without asking where he came from.””

Gloria began to cry.

“Yes.””

“Without considering what would happen to our daughter.””

She covered her face.

“Yes.””

Darius turned away.

For the first time, he understood that his mother's worst betrayal hadn't begun that morning. It had begun years earlier, when she decided that fear and shame were more important than the truth.

Officer Reynolds interrupted the silence.

“We need to locate Vanessa Cole immediately. If she is connected to the original adoption and today's abduction, she may know where both children are.””

Patricia Wells checked her phone.

“Her staffing agency lists an emergency contact address in Eastwood.””

“Send it to us,” Reynolds said.

Patricia nodded.

A second officer entered carrying a laptop.

“We've received a partial response from the number that sent the threatening message. Our technical team is tracing the account, but there's something else.””

He turned the screen toward Reynolds.

A hospital database showed that Vanessa had accessed Brielle's maternity records three days before the delivery.

Darius stared at the timestamp.

“Three days ago?””

“Yes, sir.””

“Why would a nurse who wasn't assigned to my wife access her records?””

Patricia's face tightened.

“She shouldn't have.””

The officer continued.

“Her account was used to print two patient identification labels, one for Brielle Johnson and one for another patient named Tasha Green.””

“Who is Tasha Green?”” Brielle asked.

Patricia opened the medical record.

A woman in her late twenties had delivered a healthy baby boy that morning, just over twenty minutes before Brielle delivered her daughter.

The infant was currently missing.

Darius looked at the screen.

“That's the boy we were holding.””

“Yes,” Patricia said.

“And his mother is still under medical observation. She has been told that her son cannot be located.””

Brielle's eyes filled with fresh tears.

“Another mother is going through this.””

“Yes,” Patricia replied quietly.

For the first time since the investigation began, Brielle thought about the woman whose child she had held.

She imagined Tasha waking from the anesthesia, reaching for a baby who wasn't there.

She imagined the terror of being told that her child had disappeared.

“We have to find both babies,” Brielle said.

“We will,” Reynolds answered.

Darius looked at his mother.

“Did you know Tasha existed?””

Gloria shook her head.

“No. Renee said she had arranged everything with a woman who wanted to give up her baby.””

“Then why did you believe her?””

“Because I wanted a grandson.””

The admission landed heavily.

Gloria didn't attempt to soften it.

She didn't blame her age, her upbringing, or her husband's expectations.

She simply sat there, crying, while her son looked at her as if the last thirty years of their relationship had become a collection of unanswered questions.

An hour later, officers arrived at Vanessa's listed address.

The apartment was empty.

The landlord reported that she had moved out two days earlier, leaving behind several boxes and an old filing cabinet.

Inside the cabinet, investigators found adoption paperwork, medical records, and a stack of letters addressed to Gloria.

One letter was dated six months earlier.

Gloria recognized the handwriting immediately.

It was Vanessa's.

Officer Reynolds placed the letter on the desk.

“Mrs. Johnson, I need you to read this aloud.””

Gloria's fingers shook as she unfolded it.

You told me I was unwanted because you were young and poor. You told me my father had made the decision and that you had no power to stop him.

But I found the original records.

I know you signed the papers.

Gloria stopped reading.

Darius's jaw tightened.

“Keep going.””

She swallowed and continued.

The adoption was never completed.

Brielle's head snapped up.

“What?””

Gloria stared at the page.

The next lines were written in darker ink, as though Vanessa had pressed the pen into the paper.

I was moved between temporary placements under a false identity. Someone collected money every time my placement changed.

Renee knew.

And so did my father.

Gloria dropped the letter.

Darius picked it up and read the final paragraph himself.

I have spent twenty-nine years trying to discover why my own family treated me like a secret that could be sold.

You have one chance to tell me the whole truth before I do it myself.

The date on the letter was six months old.

Darius looked at Gloria.

“Dad knew?””

She shook her head frantically.

“No. No, he couldn't have—”

“You said he arranged the adoption. Vanessa says he was involved in the money.””

“Your father was a good man!””

“Then why did he let his daughter disappear?””

Gloria began sobbing.

“I don't know!””

Officer Reynolds examined the documents.

“Some of these payments appear to have been made through an account held by a woman named Evelyn Shaw.””

Gloria's face changed.

Darius noticed immediately.

“Who is Evelyn Shaw?””

His mother stared at the letter as if it had suddenly come alive.

“Renee's former employer.””

“Where is she?””

“I don't know.””

“Mom!””

Gloria gripped the edge of the desk.

“She died twelve years ago.””

Officer Reynolds exchanged a look with his colleague.

“Then we need to identify whoever inherited her records and accounts.””

Before he could continue, Darius's phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

Maya sat on a wooden chair in a dim room, her hands free but her face streaked with tears.

She was alive.

Darius nearly dropped the phone.

“Maya!””

Brielle grabbed it with both hands.

Her daughter looked frightened, but there were no visible injuries.

A message appeared beneath the photograph.

*Vanessa wants to meet you alone. Midnight. The old Saint Mary's maternity building.*

A second message followed.

*Bring the original adoption papers. No police. If you bring them, you'll get one child back.*

Brielle shook her head.

“No. Absolutely not.””

Darius stared at the photograph.

“They're threatening our daughter.””

“They want you to come alone,” Brielle said.

“That's exactly what they want.””

Officer Reynolds took the phone and examined the messages.

“We're not sending anyone into an unknown location without a plan.””

Darius looked toward his mother.

“Where are the original adoption papers?””

Gloria's lips trembled.

“I have them.””

“Where?””

She looked at him through her tears.

“Your father's old study. Inside the locked wooden box.””

Darius remembered the brass key.

The box he had never been allowed to open.

Officer Reynolds immediately arranged for officers to accompany them to the family home and secure the documents.

But as they prepared to leave, Gloria caught Darius's sleeve.

“There's something else you need to know.””

He pulled away.

“What now?””

Gloria's voice fell to a whisper.

“The papers may explain why Vanessa wants to meet you.””

She looked at the photograph of Maya.

“But they won't explain why she chose your family.””

Darius went still.

“What does that mean?””

Gloria stared at him.

“Because Vanessa didn't find you by accident.””

Then she revealed the one detail that made Brielle's blood run cold.

“Vanessa knew about your daughter before she was born. She knew you were having a girl.””

May you like

And suddenly, the question was no longer just where Renee had taken the babies.

It was who had been planning this long before Brielle entered the hospital—and why someone had waited twenty-nine years to make the Johnson family pay for a secret that was never supposed to come to light.
