Chapter 2: The Woman in the Gray Coat
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The newborn whimpered in Brielle's arms. His tiny mouth opened, and his face turned red as he began to cry.
Brielle rocked him automatically, tears spilling down her cheeks.
She had carried this child in her arms for less than an hour, but the thought that he wasn't hers felt like someone had reached inside her chest and torn something apart.
“My daughter,” she whispered.
“Where is my daughter?””
The nurse stepped closer.
“Mrs. Johnson, we're doing everything we can to locate your baby. Please remain here while we verify the records.””
“Remain here?”” Brielle repeated.
“You just told me my daughter might be somewhere in this hospital, and you want me to sit down?””
Darius caught her elbow before she could climb out of bed.
“Brielle, let them work. We'll find her.””
She jerked away from him.
“Find her? Darius, our daughter was born hours ago! Someone took her!””
The words struck him harder than a slap.
He looked at the baby, then at Maya, who was clinging to the side of the bed.
His mother stood near the window, twisting the gold bracelet around her wrist.
“Mom,” he said quietly, “give them your phone.””
Gloria stared at him.
“What?””
“Your phone. Give it to the nurse.””
“This is absurd.””
“Then you have nothing to hide.””
Gloria's cheeks reddened.
“I will not be treated like a criminal in front of strangers.””
Maya wiped her nose with her sleeve.
“You told the lady you'd bring her the boy.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Gloria's head snapped around.
“Maya, I swear to God—”
“Don't threaten her again!”” Darius shouted.
A security officer appeared in the doorway.
“Mr. Johnson? I'm Officer Reynolds. We need everyone to stay in the room while we review the situation.””
Darius pointed at his mother.
“She may have taken my daughter.””
Gloria's face crumpled into an expression of wounded dignity.
“Your own son,” she whispered.
“Accusing his mother of something so disgusting.””
Officer Reynolds didn't react.
“Ma'am, did you enter the maternity ward's restricted area today?””
“I visited my daughter-in-law. That's all.””
“Did you receive a visitor badge?””
“Of course. Everyone needs one.””
“Did you enter the nursery?””
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“You're lying.””
Gloria spun toward the child.
“Enough!””
Officer Reynolds raised a hand.
“Mrs. Johnson, please lower your voice.””
Gloria's nostrils flared, but she said nothing more.
The officer stepped into the hallway to speak with another staff member. Through the open door, Brielle could hear urgent voices, hurried footsteps, and the distant beeping of medical equipment.
Then the charge nurse entered.
She introduced herself as Patricia Wells, a woman in her fifties with silver strands in her hair and a calmness that seemed carefully constructed.
“Mrs. Johnson, I want to explain what we know,” Patricia said.
“Your daughter was delivered at 10:42 this morning. Her identification bracelet was verified immediately after birth. At 11:18, a staff member reported that the infant registered to another patient was missing from the nursery.””
Brielle stared at her.
“You knew a baby was missing, and nobody told me?””
“We initially believed the child had been transferred for additional observation. We are now investigating whether the two incidents are connected.””
“Investigating?”” Brielle's voice cracked.
“My baby is not a missing file in your computer!””
Patricia lowered her gaze.
“You're right. I'm sorry.””
Darius stepped forward.
“Show us the nursery footage.””
“We're coordinating with hospital security and law enforcement.””
“I don't want another explanation. I want to see who took my daughter.””
Patricia hesitated, then glanced toward Officer Reynolds.
“Security is reviewing the relevant cameras now.””
Gloria folded her arms.
“This is a terrible misunderstanding. My granddaughter saw something she didn't understand, and everyone is treating it as evidence.””
Maya suddenly looked up.
“I understood what I saw.””
Her voice was small, but it carried across the room.
“Grandma took me to the vending machines earlier. Then she told me to wait near the elevators while she made a phone call. I heard her say, 'The boy must go to the Johnson family. The girl can go with the other woman.''”
Darius went completely still.
Brielle covered her mouth.
Patricia's face hardened.
“Did you hear anything else, Maya?””
Maya nodded.
“Grandma said the woman needed the money before she changed her mind.””
Gloria's purse slipped from her shoulder and hit the floor.
A lipstick, a wallet, and several folded papers scattered across the tiles.
One of the papers slid beneath the hospital bed.
Officer Reynolds bent down and retrieved it.
It was a printed receipt from a private courier service.
At the top was the date.
Today's date.
Below it was a handwritten note: *Delivery confirmed. Payment pending.*
Darius stared at the paper.
“What is this?””
Gloria snatched at it.
“Give that back!””
Officer Reynolds moved it out of her reach.
“Mrs. Johnson, step away.””
“That's private property!””
“Then explain why you have a receipt referencing a delivery on the same day two newborns went missing.””
Gloria's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Brielle pushed the blankets away and swung her legs over the side of the bed.
“I'm going to find my daughter.””
Patricia gently blocked her.
“You've just delivered a baby. You need medical supervision.””
“I don't care!””
“You can help us by telling us anything you remember about the delivery room.””
Brielle trembled with rage.
“I remember your staff telling me my daughter was healthy. I remember hearing her cry. I remember asking to hold her, and somebody telling me they needed to complete routine checks first.””
Patricia exchanged a look with the other nurse.
“Who told you that?””
“I don't know. A woman wearing blue scrubs.””
“Can you describe her?””
Brielle closed her eyes, trying to reconstruct the blur of pain, medication, and exhaustion.
“Dark hair. A small scar near her eyebrow. She wore a mask.””
Patricia immediately took out her phone.
“Please describe that to security.””
Gloria suddenly laughed.
It was a short, brittle sound.
“You're all chasing shadows. Even if the babies were switched, it doesn't prove I did anything.””
Darius turned toward her.
“Why did you want a boy so badly?””
Gloria lifted her chin.
“Because you're the only son in this family.””
“So?””
“So the family name must continue!””
Brielle stared at her mother-in-law as if she were seeing a stranger.
“My daughter carries your family's name, too.””
“Girls marry and leave,” Gloria snapped.
“A son carries the bloodline forward.””
Darius looked sick.
“That's why you've spent eight years treating Maya like she doesn't matter?””
Gloria said nothing.
“You gave her a plastic doll for her birthday while you bought your friend's grandson a gold bracelet,” he continued.
“You told Brielle that giving me a daughter was a disappointment. I defended you every time because I thought you were just old-fashioned.””
His voice broke.
“I never imagined you were capable of this.””
Gloria looked away.
Then Maya whispered something that made everyone's blood run cold.
“Daddy, Grandma said the woman would take our baby girl somewhere far away.””
Darius crouched beside her.
“Where, sweetheart?””
Maya pointed toward Gloria's purse.
“She showed me a picture of a house. She said nobody would ever find the baby there.””
Officer Reynolds immediately called for additional officers.
Patricia's phone buzzed.
She read the message, and all the color drained from her face.
“What is it?”” Brielle demanded.
Patricia turned the screen toward Darius.
A security still showed a woman in a gray coat carrying a newborn through a side entrance.
Beside her stood Gloria.
And the timestamp was only twelve minutes after Brielle's daughter had been born.
Darius stared at the image.
Then he noticed something else.
The woman in the gray coat wasn't a stranger.
He knew her face.
He had seen her at family gatherings, sitting beside his mother and calling him by his childhood nickname.
“That's…” Darius whispered.
Brielle grabbed his arm.
“Who is she?””
His lips trembled.
“That's my aunt Renee.””
Before anyone could speak, Officer Reynolds's radio crackled.
A patrol unit had located Renee's vehicle abandoned behind a shopping center three miles from the hospital.
The back door was open.

Inside the vehicle, officers had found a pink baby blanket, a hospital discharge envelope, and a photograph of a newborn girl.
But there was no baby.
