Chapter 1: The Baby Switch

“THAT’S NOT MY BABY BROTHER!””

Eight-year-old Maya Johnson screamed so loudly that a nurse dropped a stack of gauze, a sleeping patient stirred behind the curtain, and every conversation in the hospital room stopped.

Brielle Johnson clutched the newborn against her chest. Her exhausted face went pale.

“What did you just say, Maya?”” Brielle whispered.

Her daughter stood beside the hospital bed, trembling from head to toe. Her small fingers pointed directly at the baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

“That’s not him, Mommy! That’s not my baby brother!””

Darius Johnson, standing near the window with a bouquet of white roses, froze. He had spent the last six hours telling everyone that his family was finally complete.

His mother, Gloria, had been smiling proudly beside Brielle's bed. At sixty-one, Gloria was a woman who believed that family names, traditions, and bloodlines mattered more than almost anything else.

She had insisted on choosing the baby's first name before Brielle had even gone into labor.

Finally, she thought, her son had given her the grandson she had always wanted.

“Finally, you've given this family a baby boy!”” Gloria exclaimed, leaning toward the newborn.

“A strong little Johnson man. Just look at him!””

Then Maya screamed again.

“I SAW YOU SWITCH THE BABIES WITH A STRANGE WOMAN!””

Gloria's smile disappeared.

For a moment, she stared at Maya as if the little girl had slapped her across the face.

Then she stormed toward her granddaughter.

“SHUT YOUR MOUTH, YOU USELESS LITTLE GIRL!”” Gloria roared.

“Stop making up lies!””

Maya stumbled backward. Her shoulder struck the wall, and she covered her face with both hands.

Brielle immediately reached for her.

“Gloria!”” she shouted.

“Don't you dare speak to my daughter like that!””

“She is ruining the happiest moment of this family's life!”” Gloria snapped.

“Look at her! She's jealous because everyone is paying attention to the baby!””

Maya shook her head so hard that her braids whipped against her cheeks.

“I'm not jealous! I wanted a baby brother! I helped Mommy pick his little blue socks!””

Darius put the roses down.

“Mom, why would Maya say something like that?”” he demanded.

Gloria lifted both hands in theatrical disbelief.

“Because she's eight years old, Darius! Children imagine things. Perhaps she heard something on television. Perhaps she doesn't like sharing her parents anymore.””

Maya lowered her hands.

“No!”” she cried.

“I saw you!””

The room fell silent again.

Darius crouched in front of his daughter.

“Maya, sweetheart, look at me. Tell Daddy exactly what you saw.””

Gloria stepped between them.

“Don't encourage this nonsense.””

“Move, Mom.””

The sharpness in Darius's voice made Gloria pause.

Maya swallowed hard.

“Before Mommy went into the operating room, I woke up from my nap. Grandma told me to stay in the family waiting room, but I wanted to see Mommy.””

Brielle frowned.

“You were asleep in the waiting room?””

Maya nodded.

“I woke up when Grandma's phone rang. She told somebody, 'It's time. Bring her to the service hallway.'' Then she left.””

Gloria's jaw tightened.

Darius slowly stood.

“What service hallway?””

“I don't know,” Maya answered.

“I followed Grandma because I thought she was bringing Mommy's bag.””

Gloria let out a bitter laugh.

“Absolutely ridiculous.””

Maya continued, her voice shaking.

“I saw Grandma standing beside a woman wearing a gray coat. The woman was holding a baby in a pink blanket. Grandma gave her a bag, and then they went behind a door.””

Brielle's fingers tightened around the blue blanket.

“A baby in a pink blanket?”” she repeated.

“Yes, Mommy. Then Grandma came back with this baby.””

Gloria suddenly grabbed Maya's wrist.

“That's enough!””

Maya screamed in pain.

Darius seized his mother's hand and pulled it away.

“Don't touch her!””

For the first time that afternoon, Gloria looked genuinely frightened.

But she recovered quickly.

“You're all behaving like lunatics!”” she shouted.

“I have been here all day supporting Brielle. I arranged everything. I paid for the private room. And now I'm being accused of stealing a baby because a child had a nightmare?””

“I didn't have a nightmare!”” Maya sobbed.

A nurse hurried through the open doorway, followed by another nurse pushing a small medical cart.

“What's going on in here?”” the first nurse asked.

Brielle pointed toward Gloria.

“My daughter says someone switched my baby. She says her grandmother brought another newborn into this room.””

The nurse's expression changed.

“Mrs. Johnson, may I see the baby's identification bracelet?””

Gloria stepped forward.

“There's no need for that. The baby was brought here by your staff.””

“Ma'am, I need to verify the identification.””

The nurse carefully examined the bracelet around the newborn's ankle.

She checked the printed name.

Then she checked the medical record attached to the cart.

Her eyebrows drew together.

“That's strange.””

Darius moved closer.

“What is it?””

The nurse turned the bracelet toward the overhead light.

“Mr. Johnson, could you confirm your full name and your wife's date of birth?””

“Darius Johnson. My wife is Brielle Johnson. Why?””

The nurse tapped the screen on her handheld device.

Then she looked at the second nurse.

“Please call the charge nurse. Immediately.””

Brielle's heart began pounding.

“What's wrong with my baby?””

The nurse didn't answer at first. She checked the bracelet again, then looked at the baby in Brielle's arms.

“I'm sorry, Mrs. Johnson. This infant's identification doesn't match your delivery record.””

Brielle gasped.

“WHAT?””

Darius grabbed the edge of the bed.

“Are you saying this isn't our son?””

The nurse took a shaky breath.

“Your medical records indicate that you delivered a baby girl. This infant is registered to another mother.””

Brielle's arms went limp for one terrifying second before she instinctively pulled the baby closer.

Darius turned slowly toward his mother.

“Mom…”

Gloria's lips parted, but no sound came out.

His eyes filled with horror.

“What did you do?””

And just as Gloria began to answer, a second nurse rushed into the room carrying a tablet.

“There's another problem,” she said breathlessly.

“The mother registered to this baby has disappeared from her hospital room.””

May you like

Then she looked directly at Gloria.

“And security says they have footage of someone entering the newborn nursery with a visitor badge issued in your name.””
