Chapter 8: The Million-Dollar Betrayal

The next forty-eight hours changed everything.
Marcus had expected Adrian to be hiding financial misconduct.
He hadn't expected to discover a network of transactions involving former executives, shell companies, and falsified development agreements.
At 8:00 AM on Wednesday, Daniel entered the executive conference room carrying a laptop and a thick stack of printed records.
Marcus was already there with three members of the company's legal and financial teams.
"Let's begin," Marcus said.
Daniel connected his laptop to the screen.
"The $1.8 million transfer was made to a company registered in Delaware called Northbridge Capital Partners.""
A financial analyst spoke up.
"Northbridge has no physical office, no listed employees, and no meaningful business activity.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Who owns it?""
Daniel changed the slide.
"Victor Hale.""
Richard Mitchell, who had joined the meeting, closed his eyes.
"Victor was with us for seventeen years.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Did you authorize the transfer?""
"No.""
"Did you know about the company?""
"Never.""
Daniel continued.
"We traced another transfer from Northbridge to an overseas investment account. The final destination is still being verified.""
Marcus studied the numbers.
"And Adrian?""
"His company access records show that he approved several payments to Victor Hale's department shortly before the transfer.""
Richard shook his head.
"That boy has destroyed everything.""
Marcus remained focused.
"What about the property agreement signed under Sophia's name?""
Daniel brought up another report.
"The original document was created on Adrian's office computer. His login credentials were used to insert Sophia's electronic signature.""
"Can we prove it?""
"The forensic team believes so. They've preserved the metadata and original file.""
Marcus nodded.
"Good. Send everything to the external investigators.""
Richard looked exhausted.
"Can I ask you something?""
"Go ahead.""
"Why are you being so careful with Sophia? After what she did to you, most men would have made sure she suffered.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Because what happened between us doesn't give me the right to punish her through a business investigation.""
Richard lowered his eyes.
Marcus continued.
"If she participated in fraud, she'll answer for it. If she was used, she'll have the right to defend herself. The evidence decides.""
Richard nodded slowly.
"I wish Adrian understood things that way.""
That afternoon, Sophia met with her attorney.
Laura Bennett placed a recording transcript on the table.
"Your conversation with Adrian is useful, but we need more than one statement.""
Sophia nodded.
"I understand.""
"Did he ever ask you for identification documents?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"About six months ago. He said he needed them for the company registration.""
"Did you provide copies?""
"Yes.""
"Did he ask for your signature?""
Sophia thought carefully.
"He asked me to sign a few blank pages because he said it would save time when preparing business paperwork.""
Laura stopped writing.
"Blank pages?""
Sophia's face fell.
"Yes.""
"How many?""
"I don't remember. Maybe three or four.""
Laura put down her pen.
"Sophia, that is important. Did you keep any messages about that request?""
Sophia opened her phone.
She searched her old conversations with Adrian.
After several minutes, she found the message.
*Adrian: Baby, just sign these pages and send them back. I'll fill in the details later. It's routine business paperwork.*
She handed the phone to Laura.
The attorney read it carefully.
"This may help establish how he obtained your signature.""
Sophia looked down.
"I was stupid.""
"You trusted someone you were in a relationship with. That doesn't automatically make you responsible for everything he did.""
Sophia wiped her eyes.
"I used to think Marcus was holding me back. He always wanted to know what I was doing with my money. He asked questions about Adrian. I thought he was jealous.""
Laura remained quiet.
Sophia continued.
"Marcus sold his father's company to pay my tuition. I never even asked how difficult that must have been for him.""
"Do you regret leaving him?""
Sophia looked out the window.
"Every day.""
"Because you loved him?""
She took a long breath.
"Because he was good to me, and I treated him like he was worthless.""
Laura closed the file.
"Regret is important, Ms. Brooks. But it doesn't erase consequences. The best thing you can do now is tell the truth.""
Sophia nodded.
"I will.""
Meanwhile, Adrian was having a very different conversation.
He sat in a private restaurant with Victor Hale.
The former CFO looked nervous, repeatedly checking the entrance.
"Why did you call me here?"" Victor asked.
Adrian poured himself a glass of water.
"Because Reed is getting too close.""
Victor frowned.
"What did you expect? You left electronic records everywhere.""
"I thought you cleaned them.""
"I cleaned what I could.""
Adrian leaned forward.
"Then we need another solution.""
Victor shook his head.
"I'm not going to prison for you.""
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"You already took the money.""
"And you approved the transfers!""
"Because you told me the project would generate returns!""
Victor lowered his voice.
"Keep your voice down.""
Adrian stared at him.
"Where's the money?""
"Some of it is gone.""
"What do you mean gone?""
"I invested it.""
"In what?""
Victor looked uncomfortable.
"A private property development.""
Adrian slammed his hand against the table.
"You were supposed to keep it available!""
Victor grabbed his wrist.
"Stop shouting.""
Adrian pulled away.
"Listen to me. Marcus Reed is investigating everything. If he finds out we worked together, we're finished.""
Victor stared at him.
Then he said something that made Adrian go quiet.
"He already knows.""
Adrian swallowed.
"How?""
"Someone inside the company has been sending him copies of our original correspondence.""
Adrian's face tightened.
"Who?""
Victor leaned closer.
"I don't know.""
Adrian stood abruptly.
"We need to find out.""
Victor shook his head.
"No. You need to get a lawyer.""
Adrian stared at him.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message from Sophia appeared.
*I have given my attorney the documents and messages proving you used my identity. Do not contact me again.*
Adrian read it twice.
His face turned red.
He immediately called her.
She didn't answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Finally, he typed a message.
*You think Marcus will marry you now? You're nothing without me.*
He sent it.
Then he threw his phone onto the table.
On Thursday morning, Marcus received a visitor he hadn't expected.
A young woman named Emily Carter stood outside his office.
She had worked as a junior accountant at Mitchell Development for three years before resigning.
Daniel brought her inside.
"Mr. Reed, this is Emily Carter. She says she has information about the missing funds.""
Marcus gestured toward a chair.
"Please sit.""
Emily placed a small USB drive on the table.
"I've been afraid to come forward.""
Marcus looked at the drive.
"What does it contain?""
"Copies of accounting reports and emails. I saved them before I resigned.""
Daniel frowned.
"Why didn't you report this earlier?""
Emily looked down.
"Because Victor threatened to blame me if the money disappeared. He said he had enough authority to make sure I never worked in accounting again.""
Marcus nodded.
"You're safe to speak here. Tell us what happened.""
Emily took a deep breath.
"At first, the transfers looked like ordinary project payments. Then I noticed that several invoices were duplicated. The same work was being billed through different companies.""
"Who approved them?""
"Victor Hale. But Adrian knew.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Are you certain?""
Emily opened her handbag and removed a printed email.
"Read this.""
Marcus scanned it.
The message was from Adrian to Victor.
The Reed acquisition is approaching. We need to move the remaining funds before the new owners review the accounts. Make sure the old project files are archived.
Marcus's expression hardened.
He read the email again.
The message had been sent three weeks before the acquisition.
Adrian had known his father was struggling.
He had known the company might be sold.
And he had planned to move money before the new ownership took control.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"This changes everything.""
Marcus nodded.
"Preserve the original files. Have legal counsel verify the chain of custody, and contact the appropriate investigators.""
Emily looked relieved.
"Does that mean they'll believe me?""
Marcus met her eyes.
"It means we'll make sure your evidence is examined properly.""
She nodded, tears gathering.
"Thank you.""
After Emily left, Daniel remained in the room.
"Sir, there's one more thing you should see.""
He opened a photograph on his tablet.
It showed a document recovered from Victor's archived files.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
*If Reed asks questions, use Sophia as the explanation. She signed everything.*
Marcus stared at the sentence.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Was this written before or after the acquisition?""
Daniel answered quietly.
"Three days before your company completed the purchase.""
Marcus stood.
"Then Adrian knew exactly what he was doing.""
His phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unknown number.
Marcus answered.
"Marcus Reed.""
A familiar male voice spoke.
"Mr. Reed, this is Victor Hale.""
Marcus glanced at Daniel.
"What do you want?""
Victor's voice trembled.
"I think we need to make a deal.""
"What kind of deal?""
"The truth about Adrian.""
Marcus remained silent.
May you like
Then Victor whispered:
"Because Adrian wasn't just stealing from the company. He was planning to destroy your reputation before you ever discovered what he had done.""
