Chapter 7: The Signature That Changed Everything

Marcus stared at the document Richard Mitchell had placed on his desk.
Sophia Brooks.
Her name appeared beneath the signature line of a commercial property development agreement worth nearly $2.4 million.
He read the document again.
"Richard, when was this agreement signed?""
"Four months ago.""
"Four months ago?"" Marcus repeated.
"Sophia was still in college.""
Richard nodded.
"Adrian told me she had connections in commercial property marketing. He said she was helping us secure investors for the development.""
Marcus turned another page.
The contract described Sophia as a financial consultant and authorized representative of a company called SB Strategic Media.
But there was something strange.
The agreement had been signed before the company received its official registration.
"Did Sophia attend any meetings?""
"Not that I know of.""
"Did she negotiate with the investors?""
Richard shook his head.
"Adrian handled everything.""
Marcus looked up.
"Then why is her signature here?""
Richard sighed.
"That's what I've been trying to find out.""
Marcus pressed the intercom.
"Daniel, come in.""
Within seconds, Daniel entered.
"Yes, sir?""
"Take a look at this agreement. I want the complete transaction history, including the original emails, payment instructions, and every person who accessed the project files.""
Daniel examined the document.
His expression became serious.
"Is this related to the Mitchell investigation?""
"Yes. But don't assume anything. I want facts.""
Daniel nodded.
"I'll have the forensic accounting team start immediately.""
After Daniel left, Richard rubbed his forehead.
"I should have listened when you first warned me about Adrian.""
Marcus closed the folder.
"Your son's decisions are your responsibility. The company's protection is mine.""
Richard looked at him.
"What happens if Sophia was involved?""
"Then the evidence will determine what happens next.""
Richard hesitated.
"She was Adrian's girlfriend. He might have used her.""
Marcus looked toward the window.
"That's possible.""
"But?""
"But she signed the agreement. We cannot pretend that signature doesn't exist.""
Across town, Sophia sat in her apartment when someone knocked on her door.
She opened it and found a woman in a dark business suit standing outside.
"Ms. Brooks?""
"Yes?""
"I'm Laura Bennett, an attorney representing Reed Industrial Holdings. May I come in?""
Sophia's stomach tightened.
"Is something wrong?""
Laura held up a folder.
"We need to ask you some questions regarding a commercial property agreement.""
Sophia stepped aside.
Laura entered and placed the folder on the dining table.
Sophia recognized the company logo immediately.
It was the same logo she had seen on the documents at Marcus's office.
"What's this about?""
Laura opened the folder.
"This agreement was signed under your name four months ago.""
Sophia stared at the signature.
"That's my signature.""
"Did you authorize this transaction?""
Sophia shook her head.
"No.""
"Did you sign the document?""
She leaned closer.
The signature looked almost identical to hers.
But something was wrong.
She had never seen the document before.
"I didn't sign this.""
Laura studied her expression.
"Are you certain?""
"Absolutely.""
"Do you have any idea who might have signed it?""
Sophia immediately thought of Adrian.
She remembered him once asking for a copy of her driver's license and a sample of her signature.
He had said it was necessary for a company registration form.
Her blood ran cold.
"He had my documents.""
"Who?""
"Adrian Mitchell.""
Laura wrote something down.
"Did you give him permission to sign contracts on your behalf?""
"No. Never.""
"Did you know about the commercial property project?""
Sophia shook her head.
"No.""
Laura closed the folder.
"We'll need a formal statement. You should also preserve every message, email, and document connected to Mr. Mitchell.""
Sophia nodded.
"Am I in trouble?""
"That depends on what the investigation establishes. For now, I strongly recommend that you obtain independent legal representation.""
After Laura left, Sophia sat motionless.
She remembered how Adrian had asked her to register SB Strategic Media.
She remembered how he had told her that successful couples trusted each other.
She remembered laughing when Marcus once suggested she be careful about mixing romance and money.
Back then, she had accused Marcus of being jealous.
Now she wondered whether he had been trying to protect her.
Her phone vibrated.
An incoming message appeared.
*Adrian: We need to talk. Come to the parking garage beneath the old office building at 7 PM. Don't tell anyone.*
Sophia stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
*Adrian: You owe me this much after everything I've done for you.*
She read it twice.
Then she took a screenshot.
At 6:55 PM, Sophia arrived at the parking garage.
She had already informed her attorney about the meeting and agreed not to destroy or conceal any information.
Adrian stood beside a black SUV.
His suit was wrinkled, and his hair looked as though he hadn't slept.
When he saw her, he walked forward.
"Finally.""
Sophia kept her distance.
"What do you want?""
Adrian laughed.
"That's how you're greeting me now?""
"You told me to meet you.""
"Because you're making my life difficult.""
Sophia folded her arms.
"Did you forge my signature?""
His expression changed.
"Who told you that?""
"Answer me.""
Adrian stepped closer.
"Listen. Things got complicated.""
"Did you sign that contract using my name?""
"I handled some paperwork.""
"Without my permission?""
He looked away.
Sophia felt her throat tighten.
"Why?""
"Because the investors wanted a representative who wasn't directly connected to my family.""
"And you chose me?""
"You were my girlfriend. I trusted you.""
Sophia stared at him.
"You used me as a cover.""
Adrian sighed.
"Don't make it sound worse than it is.""
"You put a $2.4 million agreement under my name!""
"I was going to fix everything.""
"How?""
He grabbed her arm.
Sophia pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
Adrian lowered his voice.
"You're going to tell Marcus that you knew about the agreement. You're going to say you signed it willingly.""
Sophia stared at him in disbelief.
"Are you insane?""
"If you cooperate, I'll make sure you get your share.""
"My share?""
He nodded.
"There's money involved. Enough for both of us to disappear and start somewhere else.""
Sophia's eyes filled.
"You want me to lie?""
"I want you to stop acting innocent.""
She shook her head.
"I won't.""
Adrian's expression turned cold.
"Then you'll go down with me.""
Sophia stepped backward.
"You're threatening me?""
"I'm reminding you that your name is on those documents.""
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she turned and walked toward her car.
Adrian shouted after her.
"You're making a terrible mistake, Sophia!""
She didn't turn around.
As soon as she reached her car, she called her attorney.
"Ms. Bennett, I need to tell you something. Adrian just admitted he handled the agreement without my permission.""
There was a pause.
"Did you record the conversation?""
Sophia looked at her phone.
The recording indicator was still running.
"Yes.""
"Don't send it to anyone except your legal team. We'll handle it properly.""
Sophia exhaled shakily.
For the first time in weeks, she felt she had made the right decision.
The following morning, Daniel entered Marcus's office with a new report.
"Sir, we have a breakthrough.""
Marcus looked up.
"What did you find?""
Daniel placed three documents on the desk.
"The signature on the property agreement appears to have been digitally inserted. The original electronic file was created using credentials assigned to Adrian Mitchell.""
Marcus examined the report.
"And Sophia?""
"We haven't found evidence that she authorized the agreement.""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Continue.""
Daniel hesitated.
"There's something else. We received information about a meeting between Sophia and Adrian last night.""
Marcus looked up.
"Did something happen?""
"She contacted her attorney immediately afterward. She says Adrian admitted using her identity without permission.""
Marcus leaned back.
"Then we need to hear her statement through the proper legal channels.""
Daniel nodded.
"There's one more thing, sir.""
He placed a photograph on the desk.
It showed Adrian standing outside a private office with an older man.
Marcus recognized the older man immediately.
It was Victor Hale, the former chief financial officer of Mitchell Development.
Marcus frowned.
"Why are they meeting?""
Daniel opened his tablet.
"Because Mr. Hale resigned six weeks ago. And according to the records, he transferred a substantial amount of company money shortly before leaving.""
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
"How much?""
"Approximately $1.8 million.""
Marcus slowly closed the folder.
"Find out where it went.""
Daniel nodded.
May you like
Then he added quietly:
"Sir, I think Adrian wasn't working alone.""
