Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Acquisition

The following morning, Adrian stormed into his father's office.
Richard Mitchell sat behind a massive walnut desk overlooking downtown Chicago. At sixty-two, he had built Mitchell Development Group through decades of commercial real estate deals, government contracts, and construction partnerships.
But today, he looked ten years older.
Three thick folders were spread across his desk.
Adrian threw his phone onto the leather sofa.
"Dad, tell me this is some kind of mistake.""
Richard didn't look up.
"Close the door.""
"Marcus Reed bought our company?""
"Close the door, Adrian.""
Adrian slammed it shut.
"How could you let this happen?""
Richard finally raised his eyes.
"Lower your voice.""
"You built this company! You're telling me some construction worker just walked in and bought it?""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Watch your mouth.""
Adrian paced across the room.
"Who is this guy? How much money does he actually have?""
Richard leaned back.
"Enough.""
"That's not an answer.""
"It's the only one you need right now.""
Adrian picked up one of the folders.
He scanned the first page and frowned.
"What's this debt schedule?""
Richard reached for it.
"Put that down.""
"Why are there so many outstanding loans?""
"Because businesses carry debt.""
"This isn't normal debt!""
Richard rubbed his forehead.
For months, Mitchell Development had been struggling.
Two major projects had stalled after contractors abandoned their agreements. A commercial property development had gone over budget, and a bank had threatened to accelerate several loans.
Richard had tried refinancing.
He had approached private investors.
He had even considered selling individual properties.
Nobody had offered enough money to rescue the company without demanding control.
Then Reed Industrial Holdings had appeared.
The offer was surprisingly generous, but it came with conditions.
Richard had accepted because he believed it was his only chance to protect the company, its employees, and his remaining assets.
Adrian had never been told the full story.
"Who is Marcus Reed?"" Adrian demanded.
Richard stared at him.
"He's the man who saved this company from bankruptcy.""
Adrian scoffed.
"Saved it? He bought it!""
"Because nobody else would.""
"So what? I'm still your son. You can put me in charge.""
Richard slowly removed his glasses.
"That is exactly what we need to discuss.""
Adrian stopped pacing.
"What does that mean?""
Richard pushed a document across the desk.
"The new ownership agreement requires an executive performance review. Your position is not guaranteed.""
Adrian's face darkened.
"You're going to let that guy fire me?""
"I'm telling you that you haven't earned the position you're holding.""
"Excuse me?""
Richard's voice rose.
"How many times have I asked you to learn the actual business? How many times have you missed meetings, ignored project reports, or embarrassed our clients?""
Adrian pointed toward himself.
"I'm your son!""
"And that's been your greatest advantage for far too long.""
The room fell silent.
Richard looked at him with disappointment.
"Marcus Reed built his company from the ground up. He knows every part of this industry. You spent your twenties attending parties and buying watches with money you didn't earn.""
Adrian clenched his fists.
"So you're taking his side?""
"I'm taking the side of the company.""
Adrian grabbed his phone.
"Fine. I'll meet him. I'll make sure he understands who he's dealing with.""
Richard shook his head.
"Don't make another mistake.""
But Adrian was already leaving.
Across town, Marcus stood inside a conference room on the thirty-second floor of Reed Industrial Holdings.
The room was spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.
Daniel placed a tablet in front of him.
"The Mitchell acquisition is complete. The legal team has also finalized the review of the subsidiary contracts.""
Marcus nodded.
"What about the employment records?""
"Nearly four hundred employees. Most positions will remain unchanged.""
"And the workers on the stalled projects?""
"We can bring them back once we complete the financial review.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Do it. I don't want ordinary employees paying for management's mistakes.""
Daniel made a note.
"Understood.""
Marcus looked at the photograph on his desk.
It showed him and his father standing outside the old construction supply business. His father had one hand on Marcus's shoulder, both of them smiling in front of a faded company sign.
That business had been his father's pride.
After his father died, Marcus had tried to preserve it.
But when Sophia's education was threatened, he had sold the company.
At the time, he thought he was making a sacrifice for the woman he would marry.
He had no regrets about helping someone he loved.
What hurt was discovering how little that sacrifice had meant to her.
Daniel noticed the photograph.
"Your father would be proud of what you've built.""
Marcus smiled faintly.
"I hope so.""
Then Daniel placed another file on the table.
"There's something else.""
Marcus looked up.
"What?""
"We completed the background review you requested on Adrian Mitchell and Sophia Brooks.""
Marcus's expression became serious.
"Show me.""
Daniel opened the file.
The first few pages contained Adrian's employment history, financial records, and internal company correspondence.
Marcus read silently.
Then his eyes stopped on a particular document.
"What's this?""
Daniel leaned forward.
"An expense reimbursement report.""
Marcus scanned the figures.
Several luxury hotel stays, private dinners, and expensive purchases had been charged to a company account.
"Are these legitimate business expenses?""
"Some are. Others are questionable.""
Marcus turned another page.
"And these payments?""
Daniel hesitated.
"They appear to have been authorized through a consulting company registered under a relative's name.""
Marcus looked up.
"Does Richard know?""
"We haven't established that.""
Marcus closed the folder.
"Don't make accusations until we have proof. Have the auditors examine everything.""
Daniel nodded.
"There's one more issue.""
"What?""
"Sophia Brooks.""
Marcus looked at him.
"What about her?""
"Her new position.""
Daniel opened a separate document.
"She recently received an offer from Mitchell Development Group for a marketing and corporate relations role. The offer was approved by Adrian himself.""
Marcus frowned.
"She hasn't started yet?""
"No. Her first day is scheduled for Monday.""
Marcus leaned back.
He remembered Sophia telling him about the position weeks earlier.
At the time, she had described it as an opportunity she had earned through her academic achievements.
Now he wondered how much of that story had been true.
"Was the position advertised publicly?"" he asked.
Daniel shook his head.
"No. It was created specifically for her.""
Marcus stared out the window.
He had spent seven years helping Sophia build a future.
He hadn't realized she had been building a different one behind his back.
"Don't cancel her offer just because of our personal history," Marcus said.
Daniel nodded.
"Of course.""
"Every employee deserves a fair evaluation. If she's qualified, she can work. If she's not, she can leave like anyone else.""
"Understood.""
A knock interrupted them.
The conference room door opened.
A receptionist stepped inside.
"Mr. Reed, Adrian Mitchell is here. He says it's urgent.""
Daniel glanced at Marcus.
"Would you like me to send him away?""
Marcus slowly stood.
"No. Let him in.""
A moment later, Adrian entered wearing a charcoal suit and an expression of barely controlled anger.
He didn't bother greeting Daniel.
"Mr. Reed.""
"Mr. Mitchell.""
Adrian dropped into the chair opposite Marcus.
"Let's get one thing straight. Whatever happened between you and Sophia has nothing to do with my father's company.""
Marcus folded his hands.
"I agree.""
"Good. Then you won't interfere with my position.""
Marcus glanced at Daniel.
"Have you reviewed the company's latest performance reports?""
Adrian frowned.
"That's not what I came here to discuss.""
"It should be.""
Adrian leaned forward.
"My father built that company. I'm his son. I have every right to be there.""
"Rights and qualifications are two different things.""
Adrian's face reddened.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you? You think because you have money now, you can humiliate people.""
Marcus looked directly at him.
"Interesting choice of words.""
Adrian went silent.
Marcus continued.
"Yesterday, you laughed at me because of my clothes. You told me I wasn't worthy of Sophia because I worked construction.""
"That was personal.""
"Then let's keep this professional.""
Marcus opened the folder Daniel had prepared.
"Your executive performance review begins today. Your expenses, project decisions, and management record will all be examined.""
Adrian jumped to his feet.
"You can't do that!""
"I can. I'm the controlling owner.""
"You'll regret this!""
Marcus remained seated.
"Take your time before making another threat. It won't improve your situation.""
Adrian stormed toward the door.
But just before he reached it, Marcus spoke again.
"One more thing, Adrian.""
Adrian turned.
"What?""
Marcus tapped the separate folder containing Sophia's employment offer.
"Tell Sophia to report to the company on Monday, as scheduled.""
Adrian looked confused.
"Why?""
"Because I want to meet the woman who told me she deserved someone on her level.""
Adrian's expression changed.
Marcus offered a faint smile.
"And I have a feeling Monday is going to be a very interesting day.""
Adrian left without another word.
Daniel waited until the door closed.
"Sir, are you certain you want to meet her?""
Marcus looked down at the old photograph of his father.
"Yes.""
Then his phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*Marcus, it's Sophia. We need to talk. I think we made a terrible mistake yesterday. Please don't let Adrian's father lose everything because of what happened between us.*
Marcus read it twice.
Then another message arrived.
*I still love you. Can we meet privately tonight?*
He placed the phone facedown.
Daniel watched him carefully.
"Are you going to respond?""
Marcus looked toward the city.
"No.""
He paused.
May you like
"Not until I know why she's suddenly afraid of losing the man she rejected.""
And somewhere across town, Sophia was preparing to walk into the company she believed would secure her future—without knowing that the man she had humiliated was about to discover the real reason she had chosen Adrian.
