Chapter 9: The Daughter’s Choice
I expected anger.
I expected confusion.
I expected Emma to shut everyone out.
But I never expected what she said next.
“I want to meet him.””
I sat silently on the phone.
“Emma, are you sure?””
“Yes.””
Her voice was steady.
Too steady.
The kind of calm people use when they are trying not to fall apart.
“I need to know.””
I leaned back.
“Know what?””
“Why he left.””
Those words stayed with me.
Not “Who is he?””
Not “Is he better than you?””
Just:
Why did he leave?
Because that was the wound.
Not biology.
Not genetics.
Abandonment.
The next day, I told Rachel.
“She wants to meet him.””
Rachel looked nervous.
“Are you okay with that?””
The question surprised me.
For once, someone asked.
I thought about it.
“I don’t know.””
And that was the truth.
I wasn’t afraid of Michael replacing me.
I knew Emma loved me.
But I was afraid of watching her get hurt.
Again.
We arranged the meeting at a park.
Somewhere Emma felt comfortable.
When Michael arrived, he stopped several feet away.
He looked nervous.
Emma stood beside me.
She didn’t run to him.
She didn’t smile.
She just looked at him.
Michael swallowed.
“Hi, Emma.””
She nodded.
“Hi.””
The silence was painful.
Finally, Michael said:
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””
Emma crossed her arms.
“Good.””
I almost smiled.
She sounded exactly like her mother.
Michael nodded.
“I deserved that.””
She studied him.
“Why did you leave?””
The question came immediately.
Michael looked down.
“Because I was scared.””
Emma’s face hardened.
“That’s not a reason.””
“No.””
He nodded.
“It’s not.””
“Were you scared of me?””
His expression broke.
“No.””
“Then why?””
Michael looked at her.
“Because I was young. Because I was selfish. Because I thought running away would make things easier.””
Emma looked away.
“It didn’t.””
“No.””
“It made things harder for everyone else.””
“Yes.””
The honesty mattered.
I could see it.
Emma expected excuses.
She didn’t get any.
For the next hour, Michael answered every question.
Even the painful ones.
Why didn’t he call?
Why didn’t he send letters?
Why didn’t he come back?
Every answer was ugly.
But every answer was honest.
At the end, Emma asked:
“Do you want to be my father now?””
Michael’s eyes filled.
“I don’t know if I deserve that.””
She looked surprised.
“But?””
“But I would like the chance to be someone who doesn’t disappoint you again.””
Emma looked at him for a long time.
Then she said:
“Okay.””
Just one word.
But it changed everything.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
A beginning.
That evening, Emma and I sat on the porch.
The sunset painted the sky orange.
“Are you mad at me?”” she asked.
I looked at her.
“Why would I be mad?””
“Because I wanted to meet him.””
I shook my head.
“Emma, nothing changes how I feel about you.””
She looked down.
“But he’s my real dad.””
I turned toward her.
“Listen to me.””
She looked up.
“Being your father was never about blood.””
Her eyes filled.
“It was about staying.””
She hugged me.
“I know.””
For the first time in weeks, I felt like we were moving forward.
But peace didn’t last.
Three days later, Michael called me.
His voice sounded different.
Serious.
“Daniel, there’s something you need to know.””
I stood up.
“What happened?””
“I found out why Sarah never told you the truth.””
My heart started pounding.
“What do you mean?””
A long silence.
Then Michael said:
“Because she was afraid of what you would do if you knew who Emma’s biological father really was.””
I froze.
“What are you talking about?””
Michael took a breath.
“Daniel…”
His voice lowered.
“I’m not Emma’s only biological connection.””
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
May you like
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“Sarah lied about who Emma’s father was.””
