Chapter 8: The Father Who Came Back
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not after hearing his voice.
Not after hearing the name that had been buried for twelve years.
Michael.
The man who shared Emma’s blood.
The man who disappeared before she could know him.
The man who suddenly wanted to talk.
Rachel sat across from me at the kitchen table.
Neither of us had said much since the call ended.
Finally, she spoke.
“You don’t have to meet him.””
I looked up.
“He’s her biological father.””
“He abandoned her.””
I looked at the floor.
“I know.””
Rachel reached across the table.
“But Daniel…”
I pulled my hand back.
She stopped.
I wasn’t angry at her anymore.
Not completely.
But trust was fragile.
“Why did Sarah trust him enough to tell you?””
Rachel looked down.
“She didn’t.””
“What?””
“I found out by accident.””
She took a breath.
“After Sarah passed, I found documents when I was helping organize things. That’s how I learned.””
I stared at her.
“And you never thought I deserved to know?””
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
The words hurt her.
But they were true.
Everyone had made decisions for me.
Everyone had decided what I could handle.
A week later, I met Michael.
We chose a coffee shop far from town.
Somewhere public.
Somewhere neutral.
When he walked in, I understood immediately.
He looked like someone carrying years of regret.
He sat across from me.
“Daniel.””
I nodded.
“Michael.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
“I know you hate me.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
He accepted that.
“You’re right.””
The waiter brought our drinks.
Neither of us touched them.
“Why now?”” I asked.
Michael looked out the window.
“Because I found out I was sick.””
I didn’t react.
“I’m not asking for sympathy.””
“Good.””
He nodded.
“I just wanted to meet her before I ran out of time.””
I felt anger rise.
“You don’t get to walk in after twelve years and ask for that.””
“I know.””
“You missed everything.””
“I know.””
“You missed her first steps.””
His eyes lowered.
“I know.””
“Her first day of school.””
“I know.””
“Her birthdays.””
His voice broke.
“I know.””
That was the first time I saw something real.
Not guilt.
Pain.
But pain didn’t erase absence.
“You left her.””
Michael nodded.
“I did.””
“Why?””
He took a long breath.
“Because I was twenty-two and terrified.””
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It’s my shame.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
He continued.
“When Sarah told me she was pregnant, I panicked. I thought my life was over. I ran.””
“And then?””
“Then I came back.””
“When?””
“Two months later.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Michael looked confused.
“I went to find Sarah.””
“She never told me.””
“She wouldn’t let me see her.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
Michael looked down.
“Because she told me Emma already had a father.””
I said nothing.
“She told me about you.””
My hands curled into fists.
“What did she say?””
Michael smiled sadly.
“She said, ‘Daniel doesn’t share my last name with Emma by accident. He earned it.’”
I looked away.
That sounded exactly like Sarah.
Michael leaned forward.
“I made mistakes. I was selfish. But I never stopped thinking about her.””
“Thinking isn’t parenting.””
“I know.””
The conversation lasted two hours.
At the end, Michael stood.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.””
“Good.””
“I’m asking for one chance to meet her.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
As I walked away, my phone buzzed.
A message from Emma.
*Dad, can we talk?*
I called her immediately.
She answered quietly.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
There was a pause.
Then she asked:
“Is it true?””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“That I have another father.””
I closed my eyes.
“Emma…”
“I heard you and Rachel talking.””
I sat down.
“Sweetheart—”
“Did you know?””
I couldn’t lie.
“No.””
Silence.
Then her voice cracked.
“Why does everyone know things about me except me?””
That question destroyed me.
Because I didn’t have an answer.
May you like
And before I could respond, she whispered:
“I want to meet him.””
