Chapter 10: The Secret Sarah Took to Her Grave

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The world around me continued moving.

Cars passed outside.

The refrigerator hummed.

The clock on the wall kept ticking.

But my mind was stuck on one sentence.

*Sarah lied about who Emma’s father was.*

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What did you just say?””

Michael sighed.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No. You don’t get to say something like that and then act like it’s complicated.””

“I’m not trying to hurt you.””

“Then explain.””

There was silence on the other end.

Finally, Michael said:

“Sarah told me the truth before she died.””

My heart dropped.

“She told you?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was trying to respect her wishes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps using that excuse.””

Michael didn’t respond.

“Where are you?””

“Daniel—”

“Where are you?””

“Downtown.””

“Stay there.””

I drove without thinking.

My hands were tight around the steering wheel.

My mind replayed every moment with Sarah.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every promise.

Had she been protecting me?

Or had she been protecting a lie?

When I arrived, Michael was sitting outside the same coffee shop where we had met before.

He looked exhausted.

I sat across from him.

“Start talking.””

He nodded.

“Emma’s biological father is not who Sarah told you.””

I stared at him.

“You just said that.””

“I know.””

“Then who is?””

Michael looked down.

“Me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I am her biological father.””

I felt the anger return.

“Then what was the lie?””

Michael swallowed.

“The lie was that Sarah told you I disappeared before Emma was born.””

I waited.

He continued.

“I didn’t disappear.””

The room felt colder.

“What do you mean?””

Michael looked at me.

“I was there.””

My jaw tightened.

“Where?””

“When Emma was born.””

I couldn’t process it.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No, Michael.””

“I was at the hospital.””

My hands started shaking.

“Why didn’t I see you?””

“Because Sarah told me not to come near you.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

Michael’s eyes filled.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Afraid of me?””

“No.””

He looked away.

“Afraid of what would happen if you knew.””

I leaned forward.

“Tell me.””

Michael took a deep breath.

“Sarah was worried you would leave.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

“Leave?””

“She knew how much you loved Emma.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

“She thought you would feel trapped.””

I shook my head.

“She thought I would abandon my daughter?””

Michael looked at me.

“She thought you would think you weren’t enough.””

I went silent.

Because that sounded like Sarah.

She always worried about everyone else’s feelings before her own.

Michael continued.

“She told me something I never forgot.””

“What?””

“She said, ‘Daniel is the kind of man who will stay even when he doesn’t have to. But if he thinks someone is forcing him to stay, he’ll spend his life wondering if he chose us.’”

I looked away.

Tears burned my eyes.

Sarah knew me better than anyone.

And maybe that was why it hurt.

Because she had made the decision for me.

“She should have told me.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she?””

“Because by the time she wanted to, you were already Emma’s father.””

I sat there silently.

The truth was complicated.

Too complicated.

A part of me was angry.

A part of me understood.

And a part of me missed a woman who had been gone for seven years.

When I got home, Rachel was waiting.

She knew immediately something had happened.

“What did he say?””

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

Her face went pale.

“Know what?””

“That Michael was there when Emma was born.””

Rachel stopped breathing.

That was all the answer I needed.

“You knew.””

She looked down.

“I knew some of it.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of course you did.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I’m tired of being the last person to know my own life.””

Rachel started crying.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She had no answer.

I walked upstairs.

Emma was sitting on her bed doing homework.

She looked up.

“Dad?””

I smiled weakly.

“Hey.””

She studied my face.

“Something happened.””

I sat beside her.

“Yeah.””

She put down her pencil.

“Is it about him?””

I nodded.

Then she asked the question I feared.

“Did you find out he’s my real dad?””

I looked at her.

“Emma…”

She waited.

I realized something.

No matter how painful the truth was, she deserved it.

She deserved honesty.

“Yes.””

Her expression changed.

But before she could speak, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes?””

“This is Dr. Elaine Foster.””

I didn’t recognize the name.

“I’m calling because I found something in Sarah’s medical records.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

A pause.

May you like

Then she said:

“Something that explains why Sarah was so desperate to protect Emma.””
