Chapter 8: The Father Who Never Asked for a Reward
Richard entered the diner without looking at the other customers.
He walked straight toward Olivia's booth, his polished shoes clicking against the tiled floor.
Daniel quickly gathered the papers.
“Put those away,” Richard ordered.
Olivia stood.
“You don't get to order people around anymore.””
Richard ignored her and addressed Daniel.
“You promised me you'd stay out of this.””
Daniel's hands shook as he slid Catherine's letter back into the envelope.
“I promised I wouldn't discuss confidential hospital information without authorization. I never promised to lie to her.””
Richard placed his folder on the table.
“You have no idea what you're risking.””
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“That's what you told me twenty-four years ago.””
Several customers glanced over.
The waitress approached with a coffee pot, then stopped when she saw Richard's expression.
“Sir, can I get you anything?””
“No,” Richard snapped.
“And please give us privacy.””
The waitress looked at Daniel.
“Would you like me to call someone?””
Daniel nodded.
“Please.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“This is a private family conversation.””
“Then speak to your family,” the waitress replied.
“I'm not asking you to leave yet, but you will not intimidate my customers.””
She returned to the counter and picked up the telephone.
Richard watched her go, his jaw clenched.
Then he turned to Olivia.
“Sweetheart, you shouldn't be here.””
“Stop calling me that.””
His expression faltered.
“Olivia—”
“You lied to me about finding me. You knew about my inheritance before we met. You tried to get me to sign financial documents, and now you're threatening the man who helped protect my mother.””
Richard glanced at Daniel.
“He's filling your head with stories.””
“Then explain the letter.””
“What letter?””
Olivia placed Catherine's photograph on the table.
Richard looked at it.
For one brief moment, his face changed.
His eyes softened, and something resembling grief passed across his features.
Then he looked away.
“Catherine made a lot of accusations before she died.””
“Did she say you would come after her money?””
Richard's face hardened.
“She was ill. She didn't understand the business arrangements.””
“Did she ask James to raise me?””
“Yes,” he admitted.
Olivia stared at him.
“Then why did you fight to take me away from him?””
“Because I was your biological father.””
“Daniel says the court denied you custody.””
“Because Margaret had more money and better lawyers.””
Richard opened his folder and removed a document.
“The court never established that I was an unfit parent. The dispute was about jurisdiction, timing, and the temporary guardianship arrangement. Margaret used every legal tool available to delay my access to you.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“You're leaving out the medical investigation.””
Richard turned on him.
“Stay out of this.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“I have stayed out of it for twenty-four years. I'm finished.””
Richard struck the table with his palm.
A coffee cup rattled.
“Do you think telling her these stories will change anything? Catherine is dead. Margaret is dead. All that's left is a collection of old documents that nobody can verify.””
Olivia looked at the papers.
“Then why are you so desperate to stop me from reading them?””
Richard's mouth tightened.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he sat down across from her.
“Because your grandmother built a wall around you. She told you James was your father, and you believed her. You grew up in a safe home, with a man who loved you. I wanted to be part of that life.””
“By taking my inheritance?””
“By giving you opportunities.””
“Why did you need control of my assets?””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Because Catherine's estate is complicated. It contains interests in properties, outstanding legal claims, and investments that require professional management.””
Olivia looked at Daniel.
He nodded slowly.
“That part is true. The estate was never just a bank account.””
Richard seized the opening.
“Exactly. I have experience in property development. I could have helped Olivia protect what belonged to her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You could have offered advice without demanding authority.””
Richard leaned forward.
“And what would you know about the cost of maintaining those assets? The legal fees? The taxes? The years of work required to preserve them?””
“I know Catherine wanted her daughter protected from anyone who treated her inheritance as an opportunity.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Catherine was naïve.””
Olivia's face went pale.
“Don't.””
Richard looked at her.
“She trusted the wrong people. That's why she died with unfinished business and an estate tied up in court.””
“That's enough,” Olivia said.
“No, you asked for the truth. You deserve to know that your mother made terrible decisions. She believed sentiment could protect money, and it nearly destroyed everything she had.””
Olivia stood so quickly that her knee struck the table.
“You don't get to insult her because she isn't here to defend herself.””
Richard stood too.
“And you don't get to judge me for trying to recover what should have been mine!””
The diner fell silent.
There it was.
Not concern.
Not regret.
Not a father longing to know his daughter.
Ownership.
Olivia looked at him as though she were seeing him clearly for the first time.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
Richard frowned.
“For what?””
“For finally telling the truth.””
She gathered the papers and turned to Daniel.
“Please give me a copy of everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“I will.””
Richard reached for the envelope.
Olivia pulled it away.
“Don't touch it.””
His hand stopped inches from hers.
“You have no idea what those documents could do to me.””
Olivia met his gaze.
“Then perhaps you should have thought about that before trying to use them against me.””
Richard slowly withdrew his hand.
“You think James is innocent? Ask him why he agreed to become your guardian. Ask him why he never told you about Catherine's estate. Ask him why he kept you from knowing your own family.””
“I will.””
“Good,” Richard said coldly.
“Because when you hear his explanation, you may discover that he had his own reasons for keeping you close.””
Olivia felt the old doubt stir.
Richard noticed.
He leaned forward.
“James wasn't wealthy when he adopted you. He was struggling to keep his business alive. Your grandmother offered him money to raise you, and he accepted.””
Olivia's heart lurched.
“What?””
Richard smiled without warmth.
“Ask him.””
Daniel slammed his hand on the table.
“That's not the whole story.””
Richard turned toward him.
“Then tell her the whole story.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
His expression was full of regret.
Olivia looked between them.
“What money?””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Margaret established a guardianship fund to cover your medical expenses and basic needs. James was legally entitled to reimbursement for certain costs.””
Richard spread his hands.
“There. He was paid to raise you.””
Olivia felt the floor disappear beneath her.
She remembered James working double shifts, selling his boat, and repairing their roof himself.
Had all those sacrifices been real?
Or had he simply been fulfilling an obligation?
Daniel quickly continued.
“James never received personal compensation for raising you. The fund paid documented expenses for your care. When the money ran out, he continued supporting you himself.””
Richard laughed.
“That's a convenient distinction.””
“It's the truth.””
Olivia's voice shook.
“Did James know about Catherine's estate?””
“Yes,” Daniel answered.
“Did he know Richard wanted it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't he tell me?””
Daniel looked at her sadly.
“Because he promised your mother he would never let you become involved in the dispute until you were old enough to protect yourself.””
Olivia stared at the photograph of Catherine.
All her life, she had believed James kept quiet because he didn't want to talk about a painful past.
Now she understood that his silence might have been a promise.
But she also understood that silence had left room for Richard to fill her head with a different story.
She turned toward the door.
“I need to see James.””
Richard called after her.
“You're making another mistake!””
Olivia stopped.
“No, Richard. I made my mistake yesterday.””
She faced him.
“I chose you because I thought blood made you my father. Today, I'm going to ask the man who raised me what happened. And this time, I'm going to listen.””
Richard's face twisted.
“You'll regret humiliating me.””
Olivia held his gaze.
“You humiliated yourself.””
She walked out with Ethan beside her.
Daniel remained at the table, gathering the documents.
Before Olivia reached the car, he called after her.
“Olivia!””
She turned.
“There is one more thing.””
He hurried toward her, carrying a small photograph.
“This was taken the day the court finalized your adoption.””
Olivia accepted it.
James stood beside Margaret, holding a sleeping baby. His eyes were red, and his shirt was wrinkled. Margaret was smiling through tears.
On the back, James had written:
I don't know what the future holds. I only know that this child will never have to wonder whether she is wanted.
Olivia pressed the photograph against her chest.
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
“James didn't take you because Margaret paid him. He refused the first offer. He only agreed to become your guardian after Richard tried to have you removed from the hospital.””
Olivia looked up.
“Why would Richard try to remove a newborn from the hospital?””
Daniel's eyes filled with pain.
“Because Catherine had changed her will the night before she died.””
He glanced toward the diner window.
“And she left Richard nothing.””
Olivia's phone began to ring.
James.
She answered immediately.
“Dad?””
His voice was strained.
“Where are you?””
“At the Magnolia Diner. I met Daniel Price.””
Silence.
Then James said, “Get away from there. Right now.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard isn't the only person who knows about Catherine's estate.””
Olivia looked toward the parking lot.
A second black vehicle had pulled in behind Richard's SUV.
Two men stepped out.
One carried a leather briefcase.
The other held a folded document.
James spoke urgently.
“Olivia, listen to me. If those men approach you, do not sign anything. They're from the company that has been trying to take control of Catherine's property for twenty-four years.””
Olivia stared at the men through the window.
The taller one opened the diner door.
May you like
Then he called her name.
“Ms. Bennett? We have a court order concerning your inheritance.””
