Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in the Trust

Olivia didn't return to the reception for nearly twenty minutes.

When she finally walked into the ballroom, the guests were already whispering.

Her husband, Ethan, stood near the head table, speaking to the wedding planner. Richard was at the bar, laughing with two men in tailored suits as though nothing had happened.

The moment he saw Olivia, he excused himself.

“There you are, sweetheart.””

She held up the envelope.

“What does this mean?””

Richard's smile faded.

“Not here.””

“Why? You had no problem making a scene when James was being humiliated.””

“I didn't humiliate him.””

“You told him you wouldn't pay for anything he did for me.””

Richard glanced toward the nearest table.

“Keep your voice down.””

Olivia stepped closer.

“What's in this envelope?””

Richard reached for it.

She moved it behind her back.

“Don't.””

His jaw tightened.

“Olivia, listen to me. James has always been possessive. He raised you, and now he can't accept that you have another father.””

“Then why are you afraid of this?””

“I'm not afraid of anything.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

Richard leaned toward her.

“It's old paperwork. Legal details your grandmother arranged years ago. Nothing that should concern you on your wedding day.””

“You recognized the date.””

He blinked.

“What?””

“The date on the envelope. Six months ago. The month you found me.””

Richard's gaze shifted toward the entrance.

For the first time since Olivia had met him, he looked like a man searching for an exit.

She felt a cold knot form in her stomach.

“Richard?””

He took her by the elbow.

“Come outside. We'll talk privately.””

She pulled free.

“I'm not going anywhere until you answer me.””

Ethan appeared beside them.

“What's happening?””

Olivia turned to her husband.

“Richard knows something about my grandmother's trust, and he won't tell me what it is.””

Ethan glanced at the envelope.

“Then perhaps you should open it.””

Richard gave him an irritated look.

“This is a private family matter.””

“Olivia is my wife,” Ethan replied.

“If something affects her future, it's my business to make sure she isn't being deceived.””

Richard laughed without humor.

“Marriage doesn't make you an expert in inheritance law, son.””

“No,” Ethan said.

“But it does make me concerned when someone tries to stop my wife from reading a document addressed to her.””

Olivia had never heard Ethan speak to Richard that way.

It steadied her.

She opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of legal documents, a notarized statement, several bank records, and a letter from Margaret's attorney, Helen Whitmore.

The first page carried the title:

*BENEFICIARY TRUST AGREEMENT — OLIVIA BENNETT.*

Olivia scanned the first few paragraphs.

The trust had been established when she was a child. It contained money from Margaret's property sale, investments, and a life insurance policy.

The balance listed in the attached statement was more than $1.8 million.

Olivia gripped the paper.

“Ethan.””

He read the figure over her shoulder.

“Oh, my God.””

Richard quickly interrupted.

“That balance is outdated. Investments change. You can't assume that's what remains.””

Olivia looked at him.

“How do you know?””

Richard hesitated.

The question was simple.

His answer wasn't.

“Because your grandmother's attorney contacted me.””

“When?””

“Some time ago.””

“How long ago?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Olivia, this isn't the time.””

She lifted the next document.

It was a notarized statement bearing Richard's signature.

At the top were the words:

*ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF BIOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP AND FINANCIAL NON-INTERFERENCE.*

Olivia read it once.

Then again.

The statement confirmed Richard's biological relationship to Olivia. It also recorded that he had been informed of the trust's existence and agreed not to interfere with its administration or solicit funds from the beneficiary.

The date was six months earlier.

Olivia's hands began to shake.

“You knew about the trust before you contacted me.””

Richard looked at her.

“I was informed that it existed.””

“And you didn't tell me.””

“I wanted to get to know you first.””

“You bought me a designer handbag, took me to expensive restaurants, and told me we had a special connection.””

“We do have a special connection.””

“You told me you had spent years searching for me.””

“I did search for you.””

“Then why did you sign this?””

Richard's voice hardened.

“Because your grandmother's attorney wanted assurances that I wouldn't interfere with the trust. I signed a standard document. That doesn't mean I came back for money.””

Olivia looked at the bank statement again.

A handwritten note appeared in the margin.

Beneficiary to receive independent legal advice before any changes to estate arrangements.

Beneath it was another document, dated three weeks before Richard had contacted her.

It was a letter from Margaret's attorney explaining that the trust could not be altered merely because Richard had re-established contact with Olivia.

But one clause caught her attention.

If Olivia attempted to transfer control of the trust to another person before turning twenty-five, the trustee would suspend discretionary distributions until an independent review had been completed.

Olivia stared at the page.

“What does this mean?””

Richard reached for it.

“It's a technical clause. Your grandmother was extremely cautious.””

“Why would she need to be cautious about me?””

“Not you. People around you.””

His answer was too quick.

Ethan read the paragraph again.

“It means if someone pressures Olivia into handing over the money, the trustee can freeze certain distributions while investigating.””

Richard gave him a cold look.

“That's one interpretation.””

“It's what the document says.””

Olivia felt the ballroom spinning around her.

Six months ago, Richard had appeared in her life with stories of regret and promises of a new beginning.

He had encouraged her to reconnect with relatives she had never met. He had introduced her to wealthy acquaintances. He had even suggested that after the wedding, she and Ethan could use her inheritance to buy a larger home and invest in a business together.

He had always called it our future.

She had thought he was being loving.

Now she wondered whether he had been calculating.

“Did you know how much was in the trust?”” she asked.

Richard's expression softened, as though he were trying to soothe a frightened child.

“Olivia, listen to me. I am your father. I know I've missed a lot, and I regret that every day. But I'm here now.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I wanted to be part of your life.””

“Before or after you learned about the money?””

His silence stretched.

Then he set his champagne glass on a nearby table.

“I was contacted by the attorney. I won't lie about that. But I didn't know the exact amount until later.””

“Later when?””

“After we reconnected.””

“Before you took me to meet your business partners?””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Careful.””

Olivia stared at him.

“Before you told me James had been keeping me from my real family?””

“I never said that.””

“You said he had hidden my past from me.””

“He had!””

“He raised me. He didn't have to tell me every painful detail of my birth when I was a child.””

Richard's voice rose.

“And now you're defending him again?””

Olivia recoiled.

A nearby guest stopped talking.

Richard noticed the attention and lowered his voice.

“Sweetheart, we can settle this without turning your wedding into a courtroom.””

She looked at the documents.

Then at the man wearing the white rose she had taken from James.

“I don't know what we can settle,” she said.

“I don't even know why you came back.””

Richard's face hardened.

“I came back because you're my daughter.””

“Then why did you sign a document promising not to interfere with my inheritance?””

“Because I was protecting myself from accusations exactly like this!””

He reached for the papers.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Don't touch them.””

Richard stared at him.

“You should stay out of this.””

“I'm afraid I can't.””

Olivia gathered the documents and tucked them into the envelope.

She needed answers from someone who wasn't standing in a ballroom trying to convince her that everything was fine.

She found the attorney's letter and located a phone number.

Then she walked toward the quiet hallway outside the bridal suite and called.

A woman answered after two rings.

“Whitmore and Associates. This is Helen Whitmore speaking.””

Olivia swallowed.

“My name is Olivia Bennett. My grandmother was Margaret Bennett.””

There was a pause.

Then Helen's voice changed.

“Olivia. I've been expecting your call.””

Olivia pressed a hand against the wall.

“You knew this would happen?””

“I hoped it wouldn't happen this way.””

“What does Richard Hayes have to do with my trust?””

Helen exhaled slowly.

“Before I answer that, I need to ask you something. Are you alone?””

Olivia looked through the open doorway.

Richard was speaking urgently to Ethan, gesturing toward the envelope.

“No,” Olivia whispered.

“But I can be.””

“Good. Please listen carefully. Your grandmother left instructions that I was not to discuss the full circumstances of your inheritance until you contacted me personally.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed someone might try to influence you before you were old enough to understand the consequences.””

Olivia's heart began to pound.

“Someone like Richard?””

“I cannot make that accusation without explaining the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Helen was silent for a moment.

Then she said, “Olivia, the trust is only one part of what your grandmother left behind. There is another document, sealed separately, that concerns your biological father.””

Olivia closed her eyes.

“What does it say?””

“I can't tell you over the telephone. But I can arrange a meeting first thing Monday morning.””

“Monday? I need to know now.””

“I'm sorry. The original document must be reviewed in person, and there are legal safeguards I must follow.””

Olivia gripped the phone.

“Please. My wedding is falling apart. My father—”

She stopped.

Which father?

Helen seemed to understand.

“Olivia, your grandmother anticipated that you might one day have to choose whom to trust. She left something very specific in that document.””

“What?””

Helen lowered her voice.

“A condition that could change everything you believe about Richard Hayes.””

Olivia looked through the doorway again.

Richard had stopped speaking to Ethan.

He was watching her.

And when their eyes met, he slowly removed the white rose from his lapel.

He held it between two fingers.

Then he dropped it into a nearby trash can.

Olivia felt something inside her break.

Helen spoke again.

“Olivia, there's one more thing. Has Richard asked you to sign any documents since he returned?””

Olivia's mind raced.

Two weeks earlier, Richard had brought papers to her apartment. He had called them family-planning documents, saying they would make it easier to coordinate financial decisions after the wedding.

She had signed the last page without reading every paragraph.

Her throat went dry.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“What did he ask you to sign?””

“I don't know. He said it was routine.””

Helen's voice became urgent.

“Olivia, do not sign anything else. Do not give him access to your accounts. And whatever you do, don't let him take that envelope.””

Olivia turned toward the ballroom.

Richard was already walking toward her.

He held out his hand.

“Give me the papers, sweetheart. We need to talk.””

She clutched the envelope to her chest.

“Why?””

His smile was gone.

“Because if you show those documents to James, you'll regret it.””

Olivia stared at him.

For twenty-four years, she had believed that discovering her biological father would complete a missing piece of her life.

Instead, it had opened a door to a secret her grandmother had spent years trying to protect.

And as Richard stepped closer, Olivia realized the most frightening possibility of all.

May you like

Perhaps James hadn't been trying to ruin her wedding.

Perhaps he had been trying to save her from the man she had chosen to call her real father.
