Chapter 7: The Stranger Who Knew Her Mother

Olivia read the message six times.

*AND SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO YOUR MOTHER.*

For twenty-four years, her mother had existed in fragments.

A name on an adoption record. A photograph Margaret kept in a locked drawer. A handful of carefully chosen sentences from James whenever Olivia asked why other children had mothers who attended school events while she had only him.

Her birth mother's name was Catherine Hayes.

James had told her that Catherine died shortly after Olivia was born, leaving behind a daughter who needed a safe home.

He had never explained the circumstances.

And Olivia, afraid of hurting the only parent she knew, had eventually stopped asking.

Now a stranger was claiming that everything she had been told was incomplete.

“Don't answer yet,” Ethan said, taking the phone from her hands.

“We don't know who this person is.””

“What if they know something about my mother?””

“Then they can explain it without threatening you.””

Olivia looked at the photograph again.

The document appeared old. Its edges were yellowed, and the signature at the bottom resembled James's handwriting. But the image was cropped, concealing the letterhead and several lines of text.

“Someone wants me to believe James gave me away,” she whispered.

Ethan sat beside her.

“James raised you. Whatever that document means, it doesn't erase what he did afterward.””

“But what if he never wanted to raise me?””

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Olivia knew why.

Neither of them could prove the stranger was lying.

Her phone vibrated again.

*MEET ME TOMORROW. 8 A.M. THE OLD MAGNOLIA DINER ON COUNTY ROAD 12. COME ALONE.*

A second message followed.

*ASK HELEN WHITMORE ABOUT THE SEALED TESTIMONY. SHE KNOWS WHY CATHERINE DIED.*

Olivia felt the room go cold.

Ethan leaned forward.

“That's enough. We're sending everything to Helen.””

“She may know something already.””

“Then let her explain it.””

Olivia looked at the clock.

It was nearly one in the morning.

“I can't wait until Monday.””

“Tomorrow is Sunday,” Ethan reminded her.

“Helen might still be reachable.””

Olivia called.

To her surprise, Helen answered after three rings.

“Olivia? Is something wrong?””

Olivia sent her the screenshots.

“I received these messages. Someone claims James signed away his right to adopt me and says they know what happened to my mother.””

Helen was silent.

Then Olivia heard the faint sound of paper moving.

“Did the sender give you a name?””

“No. They want me to meet them tomorrow morning.””

“Do not go alone,” Helen said firmly.

“And do not hand over any original documents.””

“Do you know what happened to Catherine?””

Another pause.

“Yes,” Helen said.

“But not everything. Some of the records were sealed, and I have not yet reviewed the complete file.””

“Did she die because of Richard?””

“I cannot responsibly tell you that without seeing the evidence.””

“Then tell me what you can.””

Helen sighed.

“Catherine died following complications from an emergency medical procedure shortly after your birth. The official record contains no finding of wrongdoing.””

Olivia closed her eyes.

“But?””

“But there was a dispute about the circumstances surrounding her treatment. Your grandmother believed important information had been omitted from the initial report.””

“What information?””

“I don't know whether the concern was justified. That is why we need the original records.””

Olivia stared at the phone.

“Did James sign a document giving me up?””

“I have seen a reference to a temporary withdrawal of his adoption petition. I have not seen the complete document.””

“Why would he do that?””

“I don't know.””

The answer hurt more than Olivia expected.

She had hoped Helen would tell her James had never signed anything, that the stranger was lying, and that her family history was simpler than it appeared.

Instead, every answer opened another door.

“There's one more thing,” Helen continued.

“Your grandmother's file mentions a witness named Daniel Price. He was a hospital administrator at the time of your birth. I have not been able to locate him.””

Olivia's stomach tightened.

“What does he have to do with this?””

“His statement was referenced in the sealed testimony. If he is the person contacting you, he may possess information that has not been included in the copies we have.””

“Can you find him?””

“I'll try. In the meantime, send me the number and every message. Do not delete anything.””

After the call ended, Ethan insisted they preserve the screenshots and forward them to Helen.

Then he sat beside Olivia until she finally fell asleep.

At 6:45 Sunday morning, her phone rang.

The number was blocked.

She answered before Ethan could wake.

“Hello?””

A man's voice spoke quietly.

“Olivia Bennett?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Daniel Price. I sent you the messages.””

Olivia sat up.

“You knew my mother?””

“I worked at the hospital where you were born.””

“Did James give me away?””

Daniel exhaled.

“That's not what happened. Not exactly.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

“I can't explain it properly over the phone. There are documents you need to see.””

“Why now?””

“Because I saw the photograph from your wedding.””

Olivia froze.

“What photograph?””

“The one where you took the rose from James's jacket and gave it to Richard Hayes.””

Heat rushed into her face.

“You were at my wedding?””

“I was invited by Richard.””

The words struck her like a slap.

“Why would Richard invite you?””

“Because he thought I was finally willing to stay quiet.””

Olivia gripped the phone.

“What do you mean?””

“I have kept my distance for years. I told myself the past was finished. But when I saw what you did to James, I realized Richard had found a way to turn you against the one person who protected you.””

Olivia felt tears gather in her eyes.

“Protected me from what?””

“From a decision made before you were old enough to understand it.””

“Was James trying to give me away?””

“No,” Daniel said firmly.

“He was trying to keep you from being taken somewhere you might never have come back from.””

Olivia covered her mouth.

“Where?””

“Meet me at the diner. Bring Ethan if you want. But don't bring Richard.””

The line went dead.

Ethan was awake now.

He had heard enough to understand.

“We're not going without contacting Helen.””

Olivia nodded.

They sent Daniel's number and the new conversation to the attorney. Helen replied that she would try to verify his identity immediately.

At 7:52, Olivia and Ethan entered the Magnolia Diner.

It was a modest roadside restaurant with cracked red booths, a counter lined with chrome stools, and the smell of fresh coffee drifting from the kitchen.

An older man sat in the booth near the window.

He wore a brown jacket and held a battered leather briefcase between his feet.

When Olivia approached, he stood.

“Olivia?””

“Yes.””

His eyes moved to Ethan.

“Your husband?””

“Yes,” Ethan answered before Olivia could speak.

“And I'm staying.””

Daniel studied him, then nodded.

“Good. You should have someone beside you.””

They sat.

Daniel opened the briefcase and removed a photograph.

It showed a young woman lying in a hospital bed, her face pale but smiling faintly. A newborn baby rested in her arms.

Olivia recognized the eyes immediately.

They were her own.

“Catherine,” Daniel said.

“Your mother.””

Olivia touched the photograph.

“Is she alive?””

Daniel's expression softened.

“No, sweetheart. I'm sorry.””

The answer hurt, even though she had expected it.

“What happened?””

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“Your mother became critically ill shortly after you were born. Before she died, she asked the hospital to ensure that you would be raised by James and Margaret Bennett.””

Olivia looked up sharply.

“Why James?””

“Because James had promised Catherine he would protect you.””

“Promised her? He knew my mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“They were close. Not romantically. James was a friend of the family, and Catherine trusted him more than anyone else.””

Olivia stared at the photograph.

“Then why did he tell me she died without explaining any of this?””

“Because Catherine's death was followed by a custody dispute. Richard claimed that he should have immediate control over you. Margaret challenged him.””

Daniel slid the old document across the table.

It was a temporary withdrawal of James's adoption petition.

The signature was real.

Olivia's breath caught.

“James signed this.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard threatened to use the dispute to remove you from the only home you had ever known. James was advised that temporarily withdrawing his petition might prevent Richard from forcing an immediate custody hearing before the hospital's investigation was complete.””

Olivia stared at the page.

“So James gave up his right to adopt me?””

“For a short time, yes. He believed it was the only way to keep you safe while Margaret fought for legal protection.””

“Did he ever tell Richard he could have me?””

“No.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Olivia, your father signed that paper because he was terrified of losing you.””

The words broke something inside her.

For the first time, the document no longer looked like evidence of abandonment.

It looked like a desperate decision made by a man who had been cornered.

“Then why was the document sent to me without the rest of the record?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because someone wanted you to see the signature without seeing the court's final order.””

“Richard?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

“This is a copy of the testimony I gave during the custody proceeding. The original was placed under seal.””

Olivia reached for it.

Daniel held it back.

“Before you read this, you need to understand something. Your mother did not simply ask James to raise you. She made him promise that if Richard ever returned, he would never allow you to become a bargaining chip.””

Olivia's hands trembled.

“A bargaining chip for what?””

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Money.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a copy of a handwritten letter from Catherine.

At the bottom, beside her signature, was a sentence Olivia would never forget.

If Richard learns who controls the money, he will come for my daughter.

Olivia looked up.

“Who controls the money?””

Daniel's face turned grave.

“Your mother had an estate of her own. Margaret placed it under legal protection, separate from the inheritance you already know about.””

Olivia's pulse quickened.

“How much?””

“I don't know the current value. But the estate was connected to a property development Richard had tried to acquire before you were born.””

He turned to the final page of his testimony.

A handwritten note had been added in the margin.

*BENEFICIAL OWNER: CATHERINE HAYES'S HEIR.*

Olivia felt the room tilt.

“Are you saying there's another inheritance?””

Daniel nodded.

“And Richard has been trying to gain access to it for twenty-four years.””

Before Olivia could respond, Daniel's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

“It's Richard.””

He rejected the call.

A text appeared immediately.

*I KNOW YOU'RE WITH HER. DON'T SHOW HER THE LAST PAGE.*

Daniel stared at the message.

Then he slowly turned the final page over.

Written on the back was a name.

A name that made Olivia's heart stop.

*JAMES BENNETT — APPOINTED GUARDIAN AND TRUST PROTECTOR.*

Daniel whispered, “There's something I should have told you before you came here.””

Outside the diner, a black SUV pulled into the parking lot.

Richard stepped out.

And he was carrying a document folder of his own.
