Chapter 6: The Name Nobody Expected
Ethan held the folded sheet beneath the chandelier, examining the black mark that concealed the third beneficiary's name.
The ink was thick enough to hide the letters completely, but the document's remaining details were clear. It referred to a trust established months before Vanessa and Ethan had announced their engagement.
The trust had been created to receive a portion of the Brooks family's business assets.
It listed Marcus as a primary beneficiary.
Vanessa's name appeared beside a condition: marriage to Ethan Brooks.
The third name had been deliberately obscured.
Ethan looked at Tasha.
"Where did you get this?""
"From Vanessa's desk," she replied.
"I was looking for a copy of the agreement she'd asked me to photograph. I found this inside a folder marked 'Personal.''"
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You had no right to go through my things!""
Tasha's voice trembled.
"I was trying to understand what you were asking me to help you do.""
"You stole that paper!""
"I copied it.""
"That's the same thing!""
"No, Vanessa. It isn't.""
Vanessa's eyes flashed with anger.
"You were my best friend.""
Tasha stared at her.
"And you were going to let me take the blame if this fell apart.""
Vanessa's mouth opened, but she couldn't answer.
Ethan turned to Daniel.
"Can you identify the trust from this registration number?""
Daniel studied the page.
"I can verify the registration and obtain the public filing records. I won't be able to identify a beneficiary from a redacted copy alone.""
"Then verify it.""
Daniel nodded.
"I'll start now.""
Marcus stepped between them.
"You're making a terrible mistake, Ethan.""
Ethan looked at his uncle.
"You've said that several times. I'm beginning to think it's the only argument you have.""
Marcus lowered his voice.
"You don't know what you're stepping into. There are agreements you haven't seen, obligations you don't understand, and people who will not appreciate you dragging this into the open.""
Ethan studied him.
"Are you warning me?""
"I'm trying to protect you.""
"From whom?""
Marcus's eyes shifted briefly toward the concealed name.
Then he looked away.
That was enough to make Ethan's suspicion deepen.
He turned toward the guests.
"I'm sorry this has happened in front of all of you. The ceremony is over. Please give the venue staff a moment to help everyone leave safely.""
A wave of whispers swept across the ballroom.
Some guests immediately began collecting their belongings. Others remained seated, watching the unfolding drama with expressions ranging from shock to disbelief.
Denise came to Ethan's side and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Are you all right?""
He nodded, although his chest felt painfully tight.
"I will be.""
She looked toward Vanessa.
"Do you want me to stay with you?""
Ethan shook his head.
"No, Mom. Stay with Simone. I need to finish this.""
Denise squeezed his shoulder.
"Your father would be proud of you for standing up for yourself.""
The words nearly broke him.
For a moment, Ethan saw his father sitting in the small office where the company had first begun, sleeves rolled up, laughing over a broken printer while insisting that the business would succeed.
His father had believed that family was supposed to be the safest place in a person's life.
Ethan had spent years trying to preserve that belief.
Now he wondered how much of his family he had ever truly known.
Across the room, Vanessa sat on a chair near the windows, her bouquet abandoned on the floor beside her.
Without the music, the applause, and the carefully staged ceremony, she looked smaller.
Tasha approached her.
"Vanessa, you need to tell them everything.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You think telling the truth will save you?""
"No. I think lying will make everything worse.""
Vanessa looked toward Ethan.
"He'll never forgive me.""
Tasha shook her head.
"You should have thought about that before you tried to take what belonged to him.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't start this.""
"Then who did?""
Vanessa stared at the floor.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, "Marcus.""
Tasha leaned closer.
"What?""
"Marcus came to me first.""
Ethan, who had been speaking with Daniel a few feet away, heard his uncle's name and turned.
Vanessa looked up.
Her makeup had begun to run beneath her eyes, but she no longer seemed concerned about how she looked.
"He told me Ethan was going to change the company structure. He said that once Ethan got married, the business would be protected from future claims and that I could have a legitimate interest in the holding company.""
Marcus hurried toward her.
"Don't you dare.""
Vanessa stood.
"You told me it was legal!""
"I told you what was possible.""
"You told me Ethan would never know!""
Marcus grabbed her arm.
She pulled away so sharply that he stumbled.
"Don't touch me!""
The guests who remained turned toward them.
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Think carefully about what you're saying.""
Vanessa looked at him with open hatred.
"You used me.""
Marcus's face hardened.
"You were happy enough to participate.""
"Because you said it would be mine!""
Ethan stepped between them.
"Enough. Both of you.""
Marcus turned toward him.
"She is lying to save herself.""
Vanessa laughed through her tears.
"And you're telling the truth to save yourself?""
Ethan raised the folded document.
"Who is the third beneficiary?""
Neither answered.
Daniel returned from a nearby table, where he had been making a call.
"I've confirmed that the registration number is valid. The trust exists, but the filing details available to me don't disclose the full beneficiary schedule.""
"Can we obtain it?"" Ethan asked.
"Through the appropriate legal process, yes. We can also preserve the records connected to the proposed transfer.""
Marcus's face tightened.
"You don't need to do this.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"Marcus, if the documents were properly authorized, an independent review should establish that.""
"And if they weren't?""
Daniel paused.
"Then the review will establish that, too.""
For the first time, Marcus seemed unable to maintain his composure.
He looked toward the ballroom doors, where two security officers stood near the entrance.
"I'm leaving.""
Ethan didn't attempt to stop him.
"You're free to leave. But don't destroy or alter any records connected to this matter.""
Marcus glared at him.
"You think you're in control because you have money.""
"No," Ethan replied.
"I think I'm in control because I finally know enough to ask questions.""
Marcus turned and walked out.
His footsteps echoed down the marble corridor until the doors closed behind him.
Vanessa sank back into her chair.
For several moments, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan approached her.
"Tell me why you agreed to this.""
Vanessa stared at her hands.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of being nothing.""
He waited.
She took a shaky breath.
"I grew up watching my mother depend on men who promised to take care of her. Every time one of them left, she had to start over. I promised myself I'd never be powerless like that.""
Ethan's expression softened slightly, but he said nothing.
Vanessa looked up.
"When I met you, I thought I'd finally found someone who could give me security. But you never understood what it felt like to worry about money. You could lose a million dollars and still wake up in a beautiful house.""
"So you decided to make sure you could never lose.""
She looked away.
"Marcus said the arrangement would protect me.""
"And you believed him?""
"I wanted to.""
Ethan shook his head.
"Wanting something doesn't make it right.""
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
"I know.""
He studied her face, remembering the woman who had once sat with him in a hospital waiting room when his mother underwent surgery. She had held his hand for six hours and refused to leave even when he told her to go home.
Had that moment been real?
Had any of it been real?
He didn't know.
And that uncertainty hurt in a way anger couldn't repair.
"I'm not going to decide what happens next based on your tears," he said.
"The documents will be examined. The money will be traced. And the people responsible will have to answer for what they did.""
Vanessa nodded weakly.
Then she looked at the folded sheet in his hand.
"There's something else you should know.""
Ethan waited.
"Marcus didn't create that trust for himself.""
His grip tightened around the paper.
"Then who created it?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"He told me it was established to honor your father's final wishes.""
Ethan went still.
"My father died four years before that trust was registered.""
"I know.""
"Then why would you believe him?""
"Because he showed me a letter. He said your father had planned to transfer some of the company to a family member before he died, but never got the chance.""
Ethan felt cold spread through his chest.
"Did you see the original letter?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where is it?""
She looked toward the doors through which Marcus had disappeared.
"He said it was kept in the family house.""
Ethan frowned.
"My father's house was sold years ago.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Not that house.""
She looked directly at him.
"The old house in Savannah. The one your father left to your family before he died.""
Ethan stared at her.
That property had been locked for years. He had assumed the contents were still being managed by the estate administrator.
He had never thought to search it for corporate documents.
Daniel approached, having overheard the last part of their conversation.
"Ethan," he said carefully, "if there's a letter connected to your father's estate, we need to verify its authenticity before drawing any conclusions.""
Ethan nodded.
But his mind was already racing.
His father had kept handwritten records of every major business decision. He had also maintained a locked desk in the Savannah house, where he stored old contracts, family papers, and letters he never wanted lost.
If Marcus had taken something from that desk, the betrayal might have started long before Vanessa entered Ethan's life.
He looked at Daniel.
"Arrange for the estate records to be reviewed. I want to know who has accessed that property and when.""
Daniel nodded.
"I'll handle it.""
Ethan turned back toward Vanessa.
"One more question.""
She looked up.
"Did Marcus tell you who the third beneficiary was?""
Vanessa's face became unreadable.
For a moment, she seemed to debate whether to answer.
Then she whispered, "He said it was someone who had been waiting a very long time for your family to pay what it owed.""
Ethan felt his heartbeat quicken.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know. He wouldn't tell me.""
Then her phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
All the color drained from her face.
Ethan held out his hand.
"Let me see.""
Vanessa hesitated before passing him the phone.
The message contained only one sentence.
You were supposed to marry him today. Now all three of us are in danger.
There was no name attached.
Only a number Ethan didn't recognize.
He read the message again, then looked at Vanessa.
"Who sent this?""
She shook her head, trembling.
"I don't know.""
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
This time, it included a photograph.
It showed the old Savannah house, taken from across the street.
May you like
The front door stood open.
And on the steps, beneath the porch light, lay a manila envelope marked with Ethan's father's name.
