Chapter 5: His Uncle's Hidden Deal

Marcus Brooks walked toward the altar with the slow, deliberate steps of a man who believed he still had control of the room.

He had always carried himself that way.

At family gatherings, he spoke loudest. At business dinners, he sat at the head of the table even when he wasn't the host. When Ethan's father died, Marcus had become the relative who offered advice, made introductions, and reminded everyone that the Brooks family name meant something.

Ethan had trusted him.

When Ethan launched his company at twenty-six, Marcus had lent him money for his first office. When the business nearly collapsed two years later, Marcus had introduced him to a lender who helped him survive.

Ethan had repaid every dollar.

He had also given his uncle a consulting contract, a generous annual fee, and a place at every major family celebration.

Now Marcus stood beside the altar, looking at the document that could destroy the family's carefully maintained image.

"You need to calm down," Marcus said.

Ethan gave a disbelieving laugh.

"That's what everyone keeps telling me.""

"Because you're letting your emotions cloud your judgment.""

"My emotions?""

Marcus nodded toward Vanessa.

"Your wedding is being ruined over paperwork you don't even understand.""

Ethan picked up the financial schedule.

"Then explain it to me.""

Marcus glanced at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

"That company was established to protect your interests," Marcus said.

"I was helping you structure your assets before the marriage.""

"Without my knowledge?""

"These arrangements are complicated. You don't have time to handle every detail personally.""

"So you decided to handle my signature, too?""

Marcus's mouth tightened.

"Nobody forged anything.""

Ethan placed the disputed authorization in front of him.

"Then why does the examiner say the signature needs further investigation?""

"An examiner can say anything.""

"Did I sign this?""

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

The silence stretched.

Finally, he said, "You authorized me to manage your investments.""

"I authorized you to advise me. I never authorized you to transfer ownership of my company.""

Marcus straightened his jacket.

"You're splitting hairs.""

"No. I'm reading the documents.""

Vanessa stood several feet away, clutching the ruined bouquet Tasha had picked up from the floor.

She looked from Marcus to Daniel.

"Can somebody please tell him that this was all supposed to happen after the wedding?""

Ethan turned slowly.

"After the wedding?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus muttered something under his breath.

Ethan stepped toward her.

"Tell me exactly what was supposed to happen after the wedding.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I didn't mean—"

"You said the words. Now explain them.""

Her chin trembled.

"I was supposed to receive my share of the holding company. Marcus said it would be easier once we were married because everything could be arranged as part of our future.""

Marcus's face darkened.

"Vanessa, stop talking.""

She looked at him with sudden fury.

"Don't tell me to stop! You promised me I wouldn't be left with nothing.""

Marcus's composure cracked.

"I promised you nothing of the sort.""

"You said Ethan's company would eventually belong to the family.""

"It does belong to the family!""

"No, Marcus," Ethan said.

"It belongs to the people whose names are on the ownership records.""

He opened the financial schedule again.

There was a column listing proposed beneficiaries. Vanessa's name appeared first, followed by the name of a company associated with Marcus.

The final entry was different.

It listed an unnamed trust, with instructions that the identity of its beneficiary be confirmed upon completion of the transaction.

Ethan tapped the page.

"What's this trust?""

Marcus's eyes flicked toward the document.

"An administrative requirement.""

"Whose trust?""

"That's a technical matter.""

"Whose trust, Uncle Marcus?""

Marcus's silence answered nothing, but his expression told Ethan that the question had struck something important.

Simone came forward from the front row.

"Uncle Marcus, please tell us what's happening.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"This is business. You don't need to be involved.""

Simone stared at him.

"You're standing at my brother's wedding, arguing about documents that might have been forged. I think I'm already involved.""

Marcus gave a dismissive wave.

"You're too young to understand how these things work.""

"I'm thirty-two.""

"And you still think the world operates on simple rules.""

Simone stepped closer.

"No. I think stealing from your own family is wrong.""

A few guests murmured.

Marcus's face flushed.

"You should watch your mouth.""

Denise immediately moved between them.

"Don't you dare threaten my daughter.""

Marcus looked around, suddenly aware that the room was no longer his to command.

Ethan had seen that expression before.

It was the face Marcus wore whenever a negotiation stopped going his way.

His uncle had spent years convincing people that he was indispensable. Now, without a contract to hide behind, he looked like an ordinary man afraid of losing everything he had built on other people's trust.

Ethan took a breath.

"I want to know who created Vantage Meridian.""

Marcus shook his head.

"I wasn't involved in every aspect of the arrangement.""

"Who created it?""

"Daniel handled the legal filings.""

Daniel immediately objected.

"I prepared the initial paperwork based on information supplied by Marcus and Vanessa. I did not authorize any transfer.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"You told me the documents were legal.""

"I told you the structure could be legal if properly authorized.""

"You said it would work!""

Daniel's face hardened.

"I also told you that no transfer could be completed without Ethan's valid consent.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, she looked genuinely frightened.

Then her expression shifted toward anger.

"You people are unbelievable. Everyone knew Ethan was going to marry me. Everyone knew we would share a life. What difference does it make how the paperwork was prepared?""

Ethan looked at her.

"The difference is that you treated my consent as an inconvenience.""

She flinched.

He continued.

"You weren't asking me to build a future with you. You were trying to build a future around me without letting me choose it.""

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

"I loved you.""

"Maybe you loved parts of me.""

She looked away.

Marcus seized the opening.

"Ethan, listen. Whatever happened, it can be corrected. We can review the documents privately, protect the family, and move forward.""

Ethan shook his head.

"You keep saying 'the family' as if that means I owe you silence.""

"I'm your uncle.""

"That should have made you more honest, not less.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"You wouldn't have any of this without the people who helped you.""

"And I have never denied that. I paid you for your work. I trusted your advice. I gave you opportunities because I believed you wanted me to succeed.""

"I do want you to succeed!""

"Then why was my company being transferred to a shell entity?""

Marcus opened his mouth, then closed it.

For the first time, he had no answer prepared.

Ethan turned toward Daniel.

"Have the documents preserved. Contact the examiner and make sure the original records are secured. Nobody here is signing anything else today.""

Daniel nodded.

"Agreed.""

"And I want a full accounting of every payment connected to Vantage Meridian.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"You can't do that without going through me.""

Ethan met his gaze.

"Watch me.""

A security guard approached the altar, summoned by a quiet gesture from the venue manager.

Ethan asked him to ensure the documents remained untouched while the appropriate professionals were contacted. He made no public accusation beyond what the papers and witnesses had already revealed.

But Vanessa seemed to understand what the discovery meant.

Her carefully planned future was unraveling.

She looked toward Marcus.

"You said the trust would protect us.""

Marcus went rigid.

Ethan turned.

"What trust?""

Vanessa's face went blank.

Marcus reached for her arm.

"That's enough.""

She jerked away.

"No! You told me the trust would protect me if Ethan discovered the transfer.""

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

"Protect you from what?""

Vanessa looked at him, then at the guests, and finally at the document lying on the table.

Her lips trembled.

"I was told that if the marriage happened, the ownership transfer would be almost impossible to challenge.""

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Marcus looked as though someone had struck him.

Ethan slowly turned toward his uncle.

"Almost impossible?""

Marcus said nothing.

Ethan picked up the final page and examined the trust reference again.

Beneath the registration number was a short notation directing the reader to an attachment that wasn't included in the packet.

He checked the envelope.

Nothing.

He checked the second packet.

Still nothing.

Then Tasha, who had been standing quietly beside the altar, reached into her lavender handbag.

"I have something," she whispered.

Vanessa spun toward her.

"Tasha, don't.""

Tasha removed a folded sheet of paper and held it out to Ethan.

"I took this from Vanessa's apartment last week. I was going to give it to you before the wedding, but she found out I'd copied it.""

Ethan accepted the page.

It contained a partial list of trust beneficiaries.

The first name was Marcus Brooks.

The second was Vanessa Brooks, pending marriage.

The third name had been blacked out.

Ethan lifted his eyes.

"Who is the third beneficiary?""

Tasha shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Marcus stepped backward.

May you like

And for the first time, Ethan saw something in his uncle's expression that looked more like fear than anger.

Because whatever Marcus had planned, he hadn't been working alone.
