Chapter 2: The Groom Who Stopped the Wedding

The ballroom looked like something out of a dream.

White roses climbed the columns. Crystal chandeliers scattered light across polished floors. Tall windows overlooked the green lawns of a luxury estate in Georgia, where guests in elegant suits and colorful dresses gathered beneath the warm afternoon sun.

At the far end of the room, Vanessa stood beside the officiant.

Her white gown flowed behind her in a perfect train. She held a bouquet of roses and lilies, and her smile was so radiant that several guests whispered about how lucky Ethan was.

Vanessa had always understood the power of appearances.

She knew when to laugh, when to tilt her head, and when to place a hand against her chest to make a moment seem sincere.

As the music swelled, she glanced toward the entrance.

There he was.

Ethan walked down the aisle in his tailored black suit, his face composed and his shoulders straight.

Vanessa's smile widened.

She lifted her bouquet slightly, silently reminding him that everyone was watching.

Ethan saw the gesture.

He also noticed the impatience behind her smile.

She wanted this over with.

She wanted the ring, the photographs, the congratulations, and the public confirmation that she had secured the life she had been chasing.

What she didn't know was that the envelope inside his jacket contained the reason their wedding might never happen.

Ethan reached the altar.

The officiant, Reverend Marcus Hill, adjusted his glasses and offered a welcoming smile.

"Well, Ethan, you're right on time," Marcus said.

"Ready to make this official?""

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

She squeezed his hand.

"Finally," she whispered.

"I thought you were going to keep everyone waiting.""

He studied her face for a second.

"Did you?""

Vanessa gave a soft laugh.

"Don't start teasing me now. I'm nervous enough.""

Across the first row, Ethan's mother, Denise, watched them with moist eyes. She had raised Ethan alone after his father died, teaching him that a man's character was measured not by what he possessed but by how he treated people who could offer him nothing.

She had never trusted Vanessa completely.

But she had kept her doubts to herself because Ethan had looked so happy.

Now Denise noticed that her son's smile never reached his eyes.

She leaned toward Ethan's sister, Simone.

"Something's wrong," Denise whispered.

Simone looked toward the altar.

"What do you mean?""

"Look at him.""

Simone studied her brother.

His jaw was tight, and his right hand rested against the inside of his jacket.

"Maybe he's just nervous," she said.

Denise shook her head.

"I've seen him nervous. This is different.""

At the altar, Marcus opened his book.

"We are gathered here today to celebrate the union of two people who have chosen to build a life together—"

"Before we begin," Ethan interrupted, "there's something everyone needs to see.""

The room went quiet.

Vanessa turned toward him.

"What are you doing?"" she whispered.

Ethan released her hand.

"Before we marry, everyone needs to see this.""

The words carried clearly across the ballroom.

Marcus lowered his book.

"Ethan, is there a problem?""

"Yes, Reverend. There is.""

Vanessa's smile flickered.

She leaned closer, keeping her voice low enough that only Ethan could hear.

"Stop this nonsense. You're embarrassing me.""

Ethan looked at her.

"Am I?""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Whatever this is, we can discuss it later.""

"No," he said quietly.

"We can't.""

A murmur spread through the guests.

Someone in the back row whispered, "What's happening?""

Vanessa glanced toward the audience and immediately replaced her irritation with a nervous laugh.

"I'm sorry, everyone. Ethan's been under a lot of pressure with work. He's probably just overwhelmed.""

She reached for his arm.

Ethan stepped away.

Her fingers closed around empty air.

For one brief moment, the mask slipped completely.

"What is wrong with you?"" she hissed.

Ethan's expression remained unreadable.

"That's an interesting question.""

He reached into his jacket and removed the sealed envelope.

Vanessa stared at it.

"What is that?""

"Something you should have been honest about.""

She looked from the envelope to his face.

Then she laughed, too loudly.

"Is this about the prenup again? Seriously, Ethan? Today?""

Several guests shifted uncomfortably.

Marcus glanced at Denise, who had risen halfway from her seat.

"Ethan," Marcus said carefully, "if you need a private moment, we can pause the ceremony.""

"I appreciate that, Reverend. But this isn't a private matter anymore.""

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

She leaned toward him, her voice trembling with controlled anger.

"You promised me you wouldn't turn our wedding into a business meeting.""

"And you promised me you loved me.""

Her mouth opened.

No words came out.

Ethan turned toward the guests.

"I want to apologize for interrupting this ceremony. I know many of you traveled a long way to be here. Some of you helped us plan this day. Some of you have supported us as a couple.""

He paused.

"But I refuse to begin a marriage without the truth.""

Vanessa's bouquet trembled in her hand.

"Ethan, please," she whispered.

"Think about what you're doing.""

"I have.""

He held up the envelope.

"This document concerns an agreement Vanessa insisted I had already signed. She told me it was routine. She told me there was nothing to worry about.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's not what happened.""

"Then you won't mind everyone seeing what's inside.""

Her eyes darted toward Tasha, seated near the front.

Tasha looked down at her lavender dress.

Vanessa noticed.

For the first time, fear crossed her face.

"Ethan," she said, forcing a smile, "we can talk about this in the office. Just you and me.""

He didn't move.

"You had three years to talk to me honestly.""

"You're making a mistake.""

"Maybe.""

He turned toward Marcus.

"Reverend, I need you to witness this.""

Marcus hesitated, then nodded.

"All right.""

Ethan placed the envelope on a small table beside the altar.

His fingers rested on the sealed flap.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Don't open that.""

The command came out sharper than she intended.

Every head in the room turned toward her.

Ethan looked up.

"Why not?""

"Because it's private!""

"Then why were you so confident I had nothing to worry about?""

She reached for the envelope.

Ethan moved it out of her reach.

"Please don't make this worse," she whispered.

For the first time since the ceremony began, her voice sounded genuinely frightened.

Ethan broke the seal.

The paper inside made a soft scraping sound as he unfolded it.

He scanned the first page.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"You should have read the fine print.""

Her face went pale.

Marcus leaned forward, trying to read the document.

Denise covered her mouth.

Simone stood.

And somewhere behind them, a guest whispered the question everyone was beginning to ask.

"What did she do?""

Ethan turned the page toward Vanessa.

Her bouquet slipped from her fingers.

The roses struck the floor, scattering petals across the white aisle runner.

She stared at the document as if it were a weapon.

"Where did you get that?"" she whispered.

"From my attorney.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"No, that's impossible.""

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"Why is it impossible, Vanessa?""

She reached for the paper with trembling fingers.

He allowed her to take it.

Her gaze raced across the lines, then stopped halfway down the second page.

The color drained from her face.

Because the document wasn't merely a prenuptial agreement.

It was an acknowledgment of a fraudulent alteration, signed by someone who had believed Ethan would never discover the truth.

And at the bottom of the page was a name Vanessa recognized immediately.

Her own.

She looked up at Ethan, her breathing suddenly shallow.

"What have you done?"" she demanded.

Ethan didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Vanessa looked down again, searching desperately for something that might save her.

Then she noticed the date.

Her lips parted.

"No," she whispered.

"You can't use this. You weren't supposed to have the original.""

The ballroom fell silent.

Ethan slowly lifted his eyes to hers.

"The original?""

Vanessa froze.

May you like

She had said too much.

And Ethan finally understood that the lie he had uncovered was only the beginning.
