Chapter 8: The Woman His Father Had Protected

Daniel arrived at Bennett and Cole shortly before nine the next morning.

Mr. Bennett was waiting in a conference room with two thick folders, a sealed envelope, and a cup of untouched coffee.

He was seventy-two, with silver hair and the weary expression of a man who had carried too many secrets for too long.

When Daniel entered, the attorney stood.

"Daniel. Thank you for coming.""

"Why is Sarah's name in my father's trust?""

Bennett gestured toward a chair.

"Please sit down.""

"I'd rather understand why my father left money to someone I haven't seen in ten years.""

"Your father did not leave Sarah a direct inheritance. He established a protective interest that would become active under certain circumstances.""

Daniel remained standing.

"What circumstances?""

Bennett opened the first folder.

"Your father met Sarah in 2016 after she came to him with concerns about Victoria. He was initially skeptical. He believed Sarah might be acting out of jealousy, but he investigated her claims.""

"And?""

"She was telling the truth about the financial inquiries. Your father discovered that Grant Mercer had been contacting people connected to the trust.""

"Did he discover the forged documents?""

"Not at that time. But he found evidence that someone was trying to establish a false record of your financial intentions.""

Bennett slid a document across the table.

It was an agreement dated May 30, 2016.

Daniel read the first paragraph.

His father had instructed the trustees to preserve the trust's assets, prohibit unauthorized transfers, and maintain a separate reserve to cover legal expenses for anyone who helped uncover fraud against the beneficiaries.

Sarah's name appeared in the final section.

"Why would Dad protect her financially?""

"Because she had already suffered consequences for trying to help you. She lost her job after rumors circulated that she had been involved in a scheme to manipulate your company. She also received threats.""

Daniel looked up.

"From Victoria?""

"We could never establish who sent them.""

"But Dad believed Sarah.""

"Eventually, yes.""

Bennett opened the second folder.

Inside were bank statements, corporate filings, and copies of correspondence between Grant Mercer and a private investment group.

"The trust was designed to preserve your father's original investment in the software company. After the sale, the proceeds were reinvested. Your father worried that a future spouse or business associate might attempt to claim control over the assets before you understood their value.""

Daniel scanned the figures.

The trust's current estimated value was substantially higher than Emily had suggested.

"How much is it worth?""

"Approximately fifty-eight million dollars, subject to a final valuation.""

Daniel sat down.

He had known the amount could be substantial. He hadn't expected a figure that large.

Bennett continued.

"Your father wanted the trust to remain separate from your marriage until you received independent advice. He did not want your wife to become a beneficiary merely through marriage, nor did he want you to conceal the trust from her indefinitely. He expected you to disclose it when you were ready to make informed decisions together.""

"Why didn't you tell me after he died?""

"Because your father left explicit instructions that the trust should remain under administration until a specified condition was met. He was concerned that an early disclosure would trigger another attempt to access it.""

Daniel looked at the documents.

"So you let me live for six years without knowing I had fifty-eight million dollars?""

Bennett lowered his eyes.

"I followed the instructions I believed were legally binding. In hindsight, I should have sought additional judicial guidance rather than relying entirely on your father's wishes. I regret that.""

Daniel's anger rose, but it wasn't simple.

His father had tried to protect him. Bennett had tried to honor those instructions. Sarah had tried to warn him.

And somehow, the truth had become a locked room where everyone held a different key.

"What exactly did my father know about Victoria?"" Daniel asked.

Bennett removed a handwritten note from the folder.

"He suspected she was involved in a scheme to gain leverage over your assets. He did not have enough evidence to accuse her publicly. The recording you received was part of the material he collected.""

"Why did he mention an undisclosed beneficiary?""

"Because Sarah's protective interest was contingent on her cooperation in a legal proceeding. Your father wanted to make sure that if the scheme resurfaced, she could obtain independent representation without worrying about the cost.""

Daniel sat back.

"Did Sarah know?""

"She knew there was a provision to protect her, but she never asked for money. She refused to accept any benefit while the allegations remained unproven.""

That sounded like Sarah.

Daniel remembered her buying him lunch when he was broke in college, then insisting she had ordered too much food. She had never liked feeling indebted to anyone.

"What about the original transfer request?""

Bennett exchanged a glance with the associate beside him.

"We reviewed the copy you sent. It appears someone attempted to use a fabricated power of attorney to redirect assets from the trust. The trustees have now placed a formal restriction on all changes pending investigation.""

"Can the trust be protected?""

"Yes. But we need to know who prepared the forged documents, who submitted them, and whether any financial institution was contacted.""

Daniel looked at the second folder.

"Can you help us find out?""

"Yes.""

Bennett leaned forward.

"There's one more thing you should know. Three days before your wedding, your father received a telephone call from Grant Mercer. The call was recorded by the office's old security system.""

Daniel stared at him.

"Why wasn't that included in the file?""

"Because the recording was stored separately. We discovered it while reviewing the original archive yesterday.""

Bennett opened his laptop.

The audio began with static, then Grant's voice.

"Mr. Hale, I think we can settle this without making trouble for anyone.""

Daniel recognized his father's reply.

"Then explain why you're asking about my son's trust.""

"Victoria is concerned about her future.""

"Then she should discuss her future with Daniel.""

"She doesn't want to marry him without knowing what she's entitled to.""

"She's entitled to nothing from this trust.""

A pause.

Then Grant said, "You might want to reconsider. There are people who believe your investments were improperly structured.""

His father answered without hesitation.

"Let them bring evidence.""

Grant's voice became colder.

"If the wedding goes ahead, this could become very unpleasant.""

"Are you threatening my family?""

"I'm warning you that things can get complicated.""

The recording ended.

Daniel sat in silence.

Bennett closed the laptop.

"We cannot establish from this call that Grant or Victoria caused any harm to your father. But it demonstrates that the pressure began before the wedding.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I want the full investigation.""

"We'll cooperate with your company's counsel and the appropriate authorities.""

When the meeting ended, Daniel stepped outside and called Sarah.

She answered immediately.

"How did it go?""

"You're named in the trust as someone my father wanted to protect.""

Sarah was silent.

"He did that?""

"Yes.""

"Oh, Daniel.""

Her voice broke.

"I never wanted his money.""

"I know.""

"I wanted you to know what was happening before you married her. That's all.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I wish I'd listened.""

"You didn't know.""

"I should have asked more questions.""

"So should I.""

He leaned against the building.

"Sarah, I need to ask you something. Did my father ever tell you why he didn't stop the wedding?""

"He said he couldn't make your decision for you. He told me that if he forced you to abandon Victoria, you might spend the rest of your life wondering whether you'd been denied a chance at happiness.""

Daniel swallowed.

"That sounds like him.""

"He also told me something else.""

"What?""

"He said if Victoria ever tried to take the trust, it would mean she'd finally stopped pretending.""

Daniel looked across the street.

A black SUV was parked beside the curb. The driver was looking down at a phone.

Sarah continued.

"Daniel, there's something happening here. Someone called me this morning asking whether I'd spoken to you.""

"Who?""

"They wouldn't identify themselves. They said I needed to return the original recording and stop cooperating.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Where are you now?""

"At home.""

"Stay there. I'll contact the attorney.""

"Daniel, listen. The person knew details about the recording that weren't in the copy I sent you. They knew your father was present. They knew the date.""

Daniel's eyes moved back to the SUV.

It had started its engine.

"Sarah, lock your doors.""

"What?""

"Now.""

He heard her moving.

Then her voice came back, frightened.

"Daniel, there's someone outside my building.""

He pushed away from the wall.

"Can you see who it is?""

"No. They're standing near the entrance.""

"Call the police. Don't open the door for anyone.""

Daniel ended the call and dialed Sarah again, keeping her on the line as he ran toward his car.

When he reached the street, the black SUV was already moving.

He caught only a glimpse of the rear license plate before it disappeared into traffic.

At Sarah's apartment, two officers were standing near the entrance. A neighbor had called them after seeing a stranger trying to enter the building.

Sarah was safe.

But someone had left an envelope beneath her door.

Inside was a single photograph of Daniel and Victoria on their wedding day.

On the back, someone had written:

*YOUR FATHER DIDN'T KNOW EVERYTHING. ASK DANIEL WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT HE SIGNED THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*

Sarah looked at him.

"Daniel, what original agreement?""

He couldn't answer.

May you like

Because he had no memory of signing anything before his wedding.

And yet the message suggested that someone believed he had.
