Chapter 5: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

Richard Hale arrived at Daniel's office at 2:15 p.m., wearing a navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

He didn't look like a man who had just been connected to an attempted financial fraud.

He looked irritated.

Daniel watched him through the glass wall of the conference room as he shook hands with the receptionist, glanced at his phone, and adjusted his cuff links.

Richard had always been good at appearing comfortable in places where he didn't belong.

He had married Victoria's younger sister, Melissa, eight years earlier. Since then, he had cultivated a reputation as a businessman who knew everyone and understood every opportunity.

He also had a habit of asking Daniel questions about his company whenever they were alone.

Daniel had always assumed it was harmless curiosity.

Now he wondered how many answers had ended up in someone else's hands.

Marcus sat beside Daniel with a laptop open in front of him.

"Do you want me in the room?"" Marcus asked.

"Yes. I want this documented.""

Richard entered without knocking.

"Daniel, what's all this about? Victoria says you've been making accusations.""

Daniel gestured toward the chair opposite him.

"Sit down.""

Richard dropped his briefcase onto the table.

"Look, I understand you're upset about last night. Victoria shouldn't have made those comments in front of everyone. But you know how she gets when she's had too much champagne.""

"She had two glasses.""

"Whatever. The point is, this isn't a reason to drag family business into the office.""

Daniel folded his hands.

"Then let's talk about business.""

Marcus turned his laptop so Richard could see the registration documents.

"Are you familiar with Vantage Meridian LLC?""

Richard's expression changed.

Only slightly.

His eyebrows lifted, and his mouth tightened before he recovered.

"Sounds vaguely familiar.""

"You're listed as the controlling party behind the registered agent," Marcus said.

"That doesn't mean I own the company.""

"Then who does?""

Richard leaned back.

"I handle registrations for several investment clients. That's part of my work.""

Daniel kept his gaze on him.

"Did you create the company for Victoria?""

Richard laughed.

"That's ridiculous.""

"Did you help her submit a transfer request against my trust?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Then why was your company involved?""

"Daniel, you're jumping to conclusions. Maybe someone used my information.""

"That is possible," Marcus replied.

"Which is why we're giving you an opportunity to explain the records.""

Richard's fingers tapped against the table.

"Fine. I set up the LLC. But it was for a prospective investment project.

Victoria mentioned that you might be interested in restructuring some assets. She asked me to prepare a company that could receive them.""

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.

"She told you I had authorized a restructuring?""

"She said you were considering it.""

"Did she provide written authorization?""

Richard looked toward the window.

"No.""

"Did she tell you she had permission to sign for me?""

"She said you'd discussed it.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Richard, I haven't discussed any of this with her.""

Richard's face reddened.

"Then maybe she misunderstood.""

"Did you know she was trying to move shares worth millions of dollars?""

"I didn't know the exact value.""

"But you knew the shares belonged to me.""

Richard didn't answer.

Marcus typed something into his laptop.

Daniel felt a familiar ache behind his ribs. Richard had attended family dinners at his parents' house. He had watched Daniel and Victoria exchange wedding vows. He had stood beside Daniel at his father's funeral and told him they were brothers now.

And he had apparently helped establish a company that could receive Daniel's assets without his knowledge.

"Why?"" Daniel asked.

Richard rubbed his forehead.

"Because Victoria said she was trying to protect herself.""

"From what?""

"From you.""

Daniel stared at him.

Richard rushed on.

"She told me you were planning to move money into a separate account and leave her with nothing. She said you'd become controlling, that you were hiding assets, and that she needed a way to protect what was rightfully hers.""

"Did you believe her?""

"She's my sister-in-law.""

"That's not an answer.""

Richard looked down.

"Yes.""

Daniel gave a short, humorless laugh.

"So you decided to help her take money from me before I could supposedly take money from her.""

"I didn't think of it that way.""

"How did you think of it?""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"I thought I was helping family.""

"Then why did you use a nominee manager instead of putting your own name on the company?""

Richard went silent.

Marcus closed the laptop.

"Mr. Hale, we have copies of the registration documents, the transfer request, and the related electronic communications. Our legal team will preserve them. You should speak with your own attorney before making further statements.""

Richard shot him an angry look.

"This is a family matter.""

"No," Daniel said.

"It became a legal matter when someone tried to transfer my property without authorization.""

Richard stood abruptly.

"You're making a huge mistake. Victoria loves you. She was embarrassed last night, and she reacted badly. That doesn't mean she's trying to rob you.""

Daniel didn't move.

"Then she can explain everything to the investigators.""

Richard grabbed his briefcase.

At the door, he turned back.

"You think you're better than us because your company made money. You always have.""

Daniel looked at him for a long moment.

"Richard, I've never thought I was better than you. I thought I could trust you.""

Richard's face twisted.

For the first time, he had no quick response.

He left.

Marcus waited until the door closed.

"Daniel, I recommend freezing every account and corporate authorization that could be connected to this.""

"Do it.""

"And you need to decide whether you want to pursue a formal complaint.""

Daniel glanced at the transfer request on the screen.

"Preserve the evidence. I'll speak with my attorney before making that decision.""

After Marcus left, Daniel sat alone in the conference room.

His phone buzzed.

Victoria had sent him a photograph of their wedding day.

In it, she was holding his arm, smiling at the camera. He remembered how she had whispered that morning that she couldn't believe she had found someone who made her feel safe.

Below the photograph was a message.

*VICTORIA: Remember when you promised you'd never let anyone come between us? I need you to remember who we were before your sister started poisoning your mind.*

Daniel stared at the image.

Then another message appeared.

*VICTORIA: Come home tonight. We can fix this privately. I won't ask about the money again.*

He nearly typed a reply.

Then he noticed something in the photograph she had sent.

Behind the newlyweds, near the church entrance, stood Grant Mercer.

Daniel zoomed in.

Grant was watching Victoria.

Not Daniel.

And Victoria's expression, when she looked away from the camera, wasn't the happy smile he remembered.

It was something else.

Something calculating.

Daniel saved the photograph and sent it to Sarah.

Her reply arrived two minutes later.

*SARAH: I recognize the woman standing beside Grant.*

Daniel zoomed in again.

A blonde woman stood half-hidden behind a column, holding a small handbag.

*DANIEL: Who is she?*

Sarah called him immediately.

"Her name is Elaine Porter," she said.

"She worked for a private wealth management firm. Grant introduced us once.""

"What was her connection to Victoria?""

"She handled confidential account structures for wealthy clients. I heard she left the firm after an internal investigation.""

Daniel looked again at the wedding photograph.

"Do you know what the investigation involved?""

"I never found out. But there's something else I remember.""

"What?""

"Two weeks before your wedding, Elaine asked me whether I'd be willing to sign a statement saying you had promised me money in exchange for helping you hide assets.""

Daniel went cold.

"Did you sign it?""

"Of course not. I told her it was a lie.""

"Why would she ask you that?""

"Because someone wanted to establish a paper trail suggesting you were hiding money from people close to you.""

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

If someone could make it appear that he had hidden assets, Victoria might claim she had been deceived. If they could create documents showing that he intended to abandon her financially, they could justify moving the trust shares before he discovered the scheme.

The attempted transfer might not have been their first move.

It might have been the final step in a plan that had started before the wedding.

Daniel called his attorney and arranged an emergency meeting.

Then he opened the photograph one more time.

There was something he hadn't noticed before.

On the church steps, Victoria was holding a folded piece of paper.

A note.

Someone had written a few words across the visible edge.

Daniel enhanced the image on his computer until the letters became clearer.

He could make out four words.

*WHEN HE FINDS OUT...*

The rest was hidden behind Victoria's fingers.

He sat back, his pulse pounding.

What had she been planning to do when he finally discovered the truth?

Before he could investigate further, a new message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a scanned document dated three days before his wedding.

At the top was Daniel's full legal name.

At the bottom was a signature that looked exactly like his.

And beside it was a sentence that made him realize the situation was far worse than an unauthorized transfer.

*I, Daniel James Hale, hereby acknowledge that I have concealed material financial information from my future spouse and agree to surrender any disputed assets upon request.*

May you like

He had never signed it.

But someone had made sure it looked as if he had.
