Chapter 6: The Document That Could End His Marriage

Daniel's attorney, Helen Brooks, read the forged document in silence.

She sat across from him in a glass-walled office on the thirty-first floor of a downtown law firm. Beyond the windows, Chicago's skyline shimmered beneath a pale afternoon sky.

Helen had represented Daniel's company for seven years. She was known for asking difficult questions and refusing to accept convenient explanations.

When she finally looked up, her expression was grave.

"Where did you get this?""

"An anonymous sender emailed it to me.""

"Have you shown it to Victoria?""

"No.""

"Good. Don't.""

She placed the document on the table and examined the signature again.

"This is sophisticated. Whoever created it had access to samples of your handwriting.""

"That wouldn't be difficult. My signature is on company contracts, tax forms, and bank documents.""

"True. But this appears to be more than a copied signature. The spacing, the pressure marks, and the slant suggest someone practiced reproducing it.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Can it be used against me?""

"Not without scrutiny. The document has no credible witness, no verified notarization, and no reliable chain of custody. But someone could use it to pressure you, particularly if they claimed it was part of a private agreement between spouses.""

"What about the trust?""

"That's the bigger problem. If Victoria believed she could establish that you concealed assets during your marriage, she might try to claim a beneficial interest in them. Whether she would succeed is a separate question.""

"Could she legally transfer the shares?""

"Not on the strength of this document alone. But if she believed the trustees would accept it, or if she intended to use it to force a settlement, she may have been counting on nobody examining the details.""

Daniel stared at the paper.

"How much of this was planned before we got married?""

Helen didn't answer immediately.

"That's what we need to establish. First, secure every record connected to the trust. Second, obtain the original transfer request. Third, find out who created this document and when.""

"And if Victoria did it?""

"Then you need to decide what you want to do about your marriage. The legal consequences will depend on the evidence and the jurisdiction. But don't confuse your personal decision with the investigation.""

Daniel nodded.

He had expected anger to be the strongest feeling.

Instead, he felt exhausted.

He thought of the first apartment he and Victoria had rented. The secondhand couch they had carried up three flights of stairs. The nights they had eaten takeout on the floor because they couldn't afford a dining table they both liked.

He remembered her falling asleep against his shoulder while they watched old movies. He remembered the way she had held his hand at his mother's grave.

Had any of it been real?

Or had she simply learned how to imitate love well enough to make him stop asking questions?

Helen gathered the documents.

"There's another issue. If the transfer request was submitted this morning, we should assume Victoria knows it was blocked.""

"She probably does.""

"Then she may try to destroy evidence or move money elsewhere. Do you have joint accounts?""

"One household account. Most of our assets are separate.""

"Change the passwords and revoke any unnecessary authorizations. Do not empty the joint account or make retaliatory transfers. Preserve the statements, and let us review the records before taking further action.""

Daniel stood.

"What about the anonymous messages?""

"Save everything. Don't reply unless we agree there's a reason to.""

As he left the office, Helen called after him.

"Daniel.""

He turned.

"Don't confront her alone if you believe she may react unpredictably. Have someone you trust nearby.""

He thanked her and stepped into the elevator.

His phone vibrated before the doors closed.

A message from Victoria.

*VICTORIA: I've made dinner. Please come home. We need to talk like adults.*

Daniel stared at it.

For ten years, those words would have been enough to bring him back.

Tonight, he drove to the house they shared because he wanted answers, not reconciliation.

Victoria was waiting in the living room when he arrived.

She had changed into a cream sweater and dark jeans. Her makeup was subtle, her hair loose around her shoulders. A candle burned on the coffee table, and two plates sat on the dining table.

The scene looked painfully familiar.

She approached him with a soft expression.

"Daniel.""

He didn't move when she reached for his hand.

She noticed.

Her fingers fell to her side.

"You're really going to keep punishing me over one bad evening?""

"Is that what you think this is about?""

"Then tell me what it is about.""

He placed a copy of the transfer request on the coffee table.

Victoria looked at it.

For a fraction of a second, her face went blank.

Then she laughed.

"I told you. Someone stole my credentials.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"Who created Vantage Meridian?""

"I've never heard of it.""

"Richard says you asked him to establish it.""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"Richard talks too much.""

Daniel felt something inside him settle into place.

She hadn't denied asking Richard to create the company.

She had criticized him for revealing it.

"Did you submit this request?""

"No.""

"Did you authorize anyone to submit it?""

"No.""

"Did you sign a power of attorney allowing yourself to control my trust?""

Her eyes flashed.

"Daniel, what are you accusing me of?""

"I'm asking you questions.""

"You're treating me like a criminal.""

"Then answer the questions.""

Victoria crossed her arms.

"You want the truth? Fine. I asked Richard to look into some financial arrangements because I was worried about our future.

You keep secrets from me. You refuse to discuss your assets. I have a right to protect myself.""

"By transferring my shares to a company you control?""

"I never said I controlled it.""

"Richard did.""

"Richard is a fool.""

Daniel watched her carefully.

"Did you know about my father's trust before we got married?""

Victoria's lips parted.

Then closed.

The silence was answer enough.

"How long?"" he asked.

"Daniel—"

"How long have you known?""

She walked toward the dining table and picked up a glass of water.

"I don't remember.""

"You don't remember whether you knew about a trust worth tens of millions of dollars?""

"I didn't know how much it was worth!""

"But you knew it existed.""

Victoria put the glass down too hard. Water splashed onto the table.

"Your father told me there might be an inheritance. He made it sound as if you were entitled to something, but he refused to explain what.""

"When?""

"Before the wedding.""

Daniel's throat tightened.

"What did he say to you?""

"He said he wanted to make sure I wasn't marrying you for money.""

"And what did you tell him?""

"That I loved you.""

"Did you?""

She stared at him.

"How can you even ask me that?""

"Because I don't know what to believe anymore.""

For a moment, her face softened. She took a step toward him.

"Daniel, I did love you. I still do. But you have no idea what it's like to be married to someone who keeps you at a distance. You built a company, bought property, made investments, and never let me feel like I was part of your life.""

"You never asked to be part of my business. You asked me to buy you things.""

"Because that's how you showed love!""

"No. That's how you measured it.""

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"You think you're so innocent. You think because you never shouted at me, you never hurt me. You made me feel small every day you refused to tell me what you were worth.""

Daniel looked at her.

"And that gave you the right to forge my signature?""

She stopped crying.

The change was immediate.

"Who told you that?""

He felt the room grow cold.

"You know about the document?""

Victoria said nothing.

Daniel took the forged agreement from his briefcase and placed it on the table.

Her eyes moved across the page.

"You shouldn't have that.""

He stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because it's private.""

"Did you create it?""

She grabbed the document.

"This is a draft. It was never used.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

"Your father wanted us to sign financial disclosures before the wedding. We discussed it. We were going to make an agreement.""

"Then why does it contain a signature I never gave?""

"Maybe you signed something similar and forgot.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I didn't.""

Victoria tore her gaze away from the paper.

"Then prove it.""

He hadn't expected her to say that.

She straightened her shoulders.

"You're accusing me of fraud, Daniel. If you want to destroy our marriage over paperwork, go ahead. But don't pretend you haven't been hiding things from me, too.""

She picked up her phone.

"I'm calling my lawyer.""

"That's your right.""

"And I'm not leaving this house.""

Daniel looked at her.

"I haven't asked you to.""

She seemed disappointed that he hadn't raised his voice.

Then her phone rang.

Victoria glanced at the screen and walked toward the hallway.

"I need to take this.""

She closed the door behind her.

Daniel remained at the table, looking at the candlelight flickering against the wall.

A minute passed.

Then he heard Victoria's voice through the half-open hallway door.

"Yes, I know he found the transfer request.""

A pause.

"No. He doesn't have the original.""

Daniel stood still.

Victoria lowered her voice.

"I told you this would happen if Richard panicked. You were supposed to make sure the document was filed before he found the trust.""

Another pause.

Then she said the words that made Daniel's hands go numb.

"Sarah was never supposed to come back.""

Daniel took one silent step toward the hallway.

Victoria continued.

"If she gives him the recording, we're finished. I don't care what you have to do. Get it back before he hears what's on it.""

The call ended.

Victoria turned.

She saw Daniel standing in the doorway.

Neither spoke.

Her phone slipped slightly in her hand.

"Daniel—"

He looked at her, and for the first time in ten years, he didn't recognize the woman standing in front of him.

"Who were you talking to?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then Daniel's phone vibrated.

An incoming message from Sarah.

*SARAH: I found the original recording. Your father was there when Victoria made the confession.*

A second message followed.

*SARAH: Daniel, you need to hear this before she gets to it.*

And beneath the message was a video file dated May 28, 2016.

Three days before Daniel's wedding.

He looked up at Victoria.

May you like

She was staring at his phone.

And she was no longer pretending to cry.
