Chapter 5: The Husband Who Knew Too Much

At 7:30 the next morning, Daniel Mitchell stood inside his office overlooking downtown Houston, watching the city wake beneath a pale gray sky.

His phone had been ringing for twenty minutes.

He ignored the first six calls from Vanessa.

The seventh came from Marcus Cole.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Tell me this is not happening.””

Marcus's voice crackled through the speaker.

“It depends on what you've heard.””

“Michael is alive.””

Silence.

Then Marcus said, “Where did you hear that?””

“Don't play games with me. Vanessa saw him at Richard's ranch yesterday.””

Marcus exhaled sharply.

“Then we have a serious problem.””

Daniel slammed his palm against the desk.

“A serious problem? You told me eleven years ago that he was gone!””

“He was supposed to be.””

“Supposed to be?””

“Daniel, lower your voice. You're in an office.””

“I don't care if I'm standing in the middle of the White House! You promised me this would never come back.””

Marcus paused.

“Did Vanessa recognize him?””

“She called him Gabriel.””

“That means she knows exactly who he is.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had spent eleven years building his company, his reputation, and the life he believed he deserved. He had convinced himself that Michael's disappearance had been necessary. He had told himself that his younger brother would have destroyed them both by exposing the financial scheme.

Now the past was standing at his father's front door.

“What do we do?”” Daniel asked.

Marcus's answer was immediate.

“Find the evidence. Everything else comes second.””

Daniel stared at the skyline.

“And my father?””

“Get him to sign the property agreement before this becomes public.””

“He won't sign anything now.””

“Then make him believe he has no choice.””

The call ended.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

A knock sounded at the door.

His assistant, Lauren, entered with a folder.

“Your wife is here.””

Daniel barely looked up.

“Send her in.””

Vanessa walked into the office wearing a black dress and carrying the same leather folder she had dropped at Richard's ranch.

She closed the door behind her.

“Did Marcus tell you?””

“Yes.””

“Then you understand how dangerous this is.””

Daniel gave a humorless laugh.

“Dangerous? My supposedly dead brother is walking around Texas, and you apparently knew him under another name.””

Vanessa placed the folder on his desk.

“I met him six years ago. I didn't know who he was at first.””

“When did you find out?””

She hesitated.

“Four years ago.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Four years?””

“I was trying to find the documents he had hidden.””

“You let me believe Michael was dead while you were secretly meeting him?””

“I was protecting us!””

Daniel swept the folder off the desk.

Papers scattered across the floor.

“Protecting us? You framed my father yesterday! You tore your own blouse and screamed that he attacked you. Do you have any idea what happens if that footage reaches the police?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You slapped him. You threw him out. You did that without me asking.””

Daniel went silent.

She had found the weakness in his argument.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Don't pretend you're innocent. You wanted Richard out of the way just as much as I did.””

“I never wanted him humiliated.””

“No. You simply wanted him to sign away eight million dollars in property.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Keep your voice down.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Now you're worried about being overheard?””

She retrieved the folder from the floor and opened it.

Inside were property documents, financial records, and a draft agreement giving Cedar Ridge Development Group an option to purchase Richard's ranch.

Daniel frowned.

“What is this?””

“Your solution.””

“I already told you Richard won't sign.””

“He doesn't have to sign immediately. The preliminary petition gives us leverage. If we can demonstrate that he's becoming confused and incapable of managing his affairs, we can request a court review.””

Daniel looked at her in disbelief.

“You're suggesting we have my father declared incompetent?””

“I'm suggesting we stop pretending that sentimental feelings are more important than survival.””

Daniel backed away from the desk.

“You've lost your mind.””

“No, Daniel. I've spent years cleaning up after your mistakes.””

She pulled another document from the folder.

It was a copy of the original insurance claim from eleven years earlier.

Daniel's face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the files you told me were destroyed.””

“You had no right to take those.””

Vanessa tapped the page.

“Then explain why the beneficiary's signature is dated two days before Michael's reported death.””

Daniel snatched the paper.

He read the date.

For the first time that morning, his composure cracked.

“Where is the original?””

“I don't have it.””

“Who does?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

“Vanessa, listen to me. If that document surfaces, both of us are finished.””

She looked down at his hand.

“Let go.””

He released her.

Vanessa straightened her sleeve.

“You need me, Daniel. Without me, you have no way to reach Marcus, no control over Cedar Ridge, and no explanation for the money missing from your company.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What do you want?””

“Half the proceeds from the ranch.””

“You're already my wife.””

“And you're already a man who once let his brother disappear rather than admit he had stolen from him.””

Daniel's face turned white.

“Be careful.””

“Or what? You'll throw me out? Slap me? Tell the world I'm a liar?””

She leaned across the desk.

“You and I built this together. If one of us falls, the other one goes down, too.””

For several seconds, Daniel said nothing.

Then he picked up the property agreement.

“Fine. Half.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Good.””

“But if you ever approach Michael without telling me again, I'll make sure you're the one standing in front of the police.””

Her smile vanished.

“You wouldn't dare.””

“Try me.””

She gathered her papers and walked toward the door.

Before leaving, she turned around.

“One more thing. Someone sent Richard the hallway footage.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“Who?””

“That's what I want you to find out.””

After Vanessa left, Daniel locked the door and called the company's chief financial officer, Peter Lawson.

Peter answered on the second ring.

“Daniel?””

“Pull every transaction connected to Cedar Ridge Development Group. I want to know where the money went.””

Peter hesitated.

“Daniel, we discussed this last month.””

“Do it.””

“There's something you need to know first.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What?””

“An outside auditor requested access to the company's accounts this morning. The request came from a law firm representing one of the shareholders.””

“Which shareholder?””

Peter lowered his voice.

“Your father.””

Daniel stared at the wall.

Richard had never been a shareholder in the company, at least not officially.

But eleven years earlier, when Daniel had needed emergency financing, Richard had signed a series of agreements that gave him rights to a portion of the business in exchange for the money used to keep it afloat.

If those agreements were enforced, Richard could demand a full accounting of the company's finances.

And if Michael's evidence supported the claims, Daniel could lose far more than the ranch.

“Reject the request,” Daniel said.

“I can't. The documents give him inspection rights.””

“Then delay it.””

“Daniel, we may already be facing a legal problem.””

Daniel ended the call.

His hands were shaking.

For the first time, he understood that his father was no longer simply a wounded old man who could be manipulated by guilt.

Richard was becoming a threat.

And threats had to be dealt with.

That evening, Daniel drove to the ranch.

He arrived alone, carrying a bottle of his father's favorite whiskey and a carefully rehearsed apology.

Richard opened the door but didn't invite him inside.

“Why are you here?””

Daniel lowered his head.

“Dad, I made a terrible mistake.””

Richard stared at him.

“You slapped me.””

“I know.””

“You called me a monster.””

“I was angry.””

“You believed a woman you'd known for three years over the man who raised you for thirty-five.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I'm sorry.””

For a moment, Richard's expression softened.

Daniel saw it and stepped forward.

“Let me make this right. Sign the property agreement, and I'll make sure you never have to worry about money again.””

Richard's face went still.

There it was.

The real reason for the apology.

“You came here to buy my forgiveness with my own land.””

“That's not fair.””

“No?”” Richard stepped closer.

“Then tell me why you need me to sign so badly.””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Behind Richard, a figure appeared in the hallway.

Michael.

Daniel's face drained of color.

Michael walked into the doorway and looked at his older brother.

“Hello, Daniel.””

The bottle slipped from Daniel's hand and shattered on the porch.

He stared at Michael as though the past had finally reached out and grabbed him by the throat.

Then Michael spoke the words Daniel had feared for eleven years.

“Do you remember what you told me before you left me on that road?””

Daniel's lips trembled.

Michael stepped forward.

“You said nobody would ever believe a dead man.””

May you like

He held up a small envelope.

“Unfortunately for you, I wasn't the only person who heard you.””
