Chapter 4: The Son Who Never Died

Vanessa stood frozen at the foot of Richard's porch, staring at the man she had believed was buried eleven years earlier.

The Texas wind lifted the edges of her cream-colored jacket. Papers lay scattered around her shoes, but she didn't bend to collect them.

She couldn't.

“Gabriel,” she whispered again.

Michael's expression hardened.

“Don't call me that.””

Richard looked from one face to the other.

“Somebody better explain what is happening right now.””

Vanessa recovered first. She snatched her sunglasses from her face and forced a laugh that sounded painfully unnatural.

“Richard, this is ridiculous. I don't know who this man is, but he's obviously trying to manipulate you.””

Michael stepped down from the porch.

“You recognized me before I said a word.””

“Your face resembles someone I once knew.””

“Someone you helped bury?””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

Richard grabbed the porch railing.

“Michael, what did she mean when she called you Gabriel?””

Michael didn't answer immediately. Instead, he walked toward the driveway, picked up one of the fallen papers, and held it toward Vanessa.

It was a property valuation report.

At the top appeared the name of Richard's ranch, followed by an estimated market value of $8.7 million.

Beneath it was a proposed purchase agreement from Cedar Ridge Development Group.

Richard felt a chill crawl down his spine.

“You came here to buy my land?””

Vanessa snatched the paper from Michael.

“It's a business opportunity. You're getting older, Richard. The ranch requires maintenance, and the surrounding area is developing rapidly. Selling would be sensible.””

“Without asking me?””

“I was going to discuss it with Daniel.””

“Daniel doesn't own this property!””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Not yet.””

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Richard stared at her.

Michael gave a bitter laugh.

“And there it is.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Shut up.””

“Tell him what you promised the investors.””

“Shut up!””

“Tell him what happens when Richard is declared mentally incompetent.””

Richard felt as if the ground had shifted beneath his feet.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa backed away.

“This man is lying. He's clearly unstable, and you're letting him fill your head with nonsense.””

Michael reached into his jacket and produced a folded document.

“Three months ago, someone filed a preliminary petition questioning Richard's ability to manage his estate. The petition included medical statements he never authorized.””

Richard snatched the paper.

His name was printed at the top. Below it were allegations that he had become confused, forgetful, and incapable of making sound financial decisions.

The document listed Daniel as the proposed conservator.

Richard's hands began to shake.

“I never saw this.””

“Of course you didn't,” Michael said.

“It was prepared to look like the beginning of a legal process. Once the right statements were gathered, they'd seek control over your property.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“You expect him to believe a stranger over his own family?””

Richard looked at her.

“You just told me Daniel would own my ranch.””

For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate answer.

Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.

“I'm calling the police. This man is trespassing, and he's threatening me.””

Michael didn't move.

“Go ahead. Tell them Gabriel Reyes is alive. Tell them you recognized the name.””

Her hand stopped above the screen.

Richard noticed.

So did Michael.

“That's what I thought,” Michael said quietly.

Vanessa's eyes flashed with hatred.

“You have no idea what you're doing.””

“Actually, I do. For eleven years, I've been waiting for someone to make a mistake big enough to expose you.””

Richard stepped between them.

“Enough! Michael, you're my son, but I need the truth. Now.””

Michael's face softened.

“I'll tell you everything. But not with her standing here.””

Vanessa moved toward her car.

“You won't get away with this.””

Michael called after her.

“You already tried to kill me once. Don't make the same mistake twice.””

She stopped.

For one fleeting moment, fear stripped away every layer of her carefully constructed personality.

Then she climbed into the sedan and drove away, leaving the scattered papers in the driveway.

Richard watched until the vehicle disappeared beyond the gate.

Then he turned toward Michael.

“Eleven years,” he whispered.

“Where have you been?””

Michael sat on the porch steps.

“Mexico first. Then Arizona. After that, I moved between cities, using different names. I couldn't return without putting you in danger.””

“Who made you disappear?””

“Daniel helped arrange the accident. Vanessa handled the paperwork. Marcus Cole found the people who could make me disappear.””

Richard sank onto the step beside him.

“No. Daniel loved you.””

“Daniel loved what he thought I could give him.””

Michael rubbed his palms together, struggling to keep his voice steady.

“When I was twenty-six, I discovered that money was disappearing from a business account Daniel and I had access to. I confronted him. He said he was borrowing it temporarily.””

“How much?””

“Almost two million dollars.””

Richard stared at him.

Michael continued.

“I found transfers to shell companies. One led to Marcus. Another led to an account connected to Vanessa. When I told Daniel I was going to the police, he arranged a meeting outside Austin.””

Richard remembered the phone call that had shattered his world.

The police had said there had been a terrible crash.

Daniel had arrived at the ranch before dawn, crying so violently that Richard had held him for nearly an hour.

“You told me you identified Michael's belongings,” Richard whispered.

“I know.””

“You told me he was gone.””

Michael lowered his head.

“I was supposed to be dead. But someone at the crash site helped me escape. I woke up in a small clinic outside San Antonio with a broken leg and a head injury. A man I didn't know told me that if I returned home, my family would be next.””

“Why didn't you contact the police?””

“I tried. But when I learned the people involved had connections to the investigation, I panicked. I thought disappearing was the only way to stay alive.””

Richard pressed both hands over his face.

“Your mother would have died all over again if she knew what happened to you.””

Michael's eyes glistened.

“I thought about coming home every single day.””

Richard reached for him.

This time, Michael leaned into his father's embrace.

For several moments, neither man spoke.

Then Richard pulled away.

“What about Vanessa? Why did she call you Gabriel?””

Michael stared toward the road.

“Because Gabriel Reyes is the name I used after I disappeared. Vanessa met me under that name six years ago.””

Richard's expression changed.

“Six years ago? She was already married to Daniel.””

“I know.””

Michael swallowed.

“She approached me at a hotel in Phoenix. She said she wanted to help me expose Daniel. She claimed she'd discovered what he had done and wanted to make things right.””

“And you believed her?””

“I wanted to believe someone was on my side.””

“What happened?””

Michael's jaw tightened.

“She stole my evidence and disappeared. When I tried to track her down, I learned she had married Daniel.””

Richard stood abruptly.

“She was working with both of you?””

“That's what I suspect. I don't know when she started planning to take your ranch, but I know she has been searching for the original documents connected to Michael Mitchell's death.””

Richard turned toward the house.

A terrible thought had just occurred to him.

“If you're alive, the insurance company could demand the money back.””

“Exactly.””

“And if Daniel knew that?””

Michael nodded grimly.

“He would have a powerful reason to keep me buried.””

A car door slammed near the gate.

Both men turned.

Evelyn Brooks hurried up the driveway carrying a laptop bag.

“Richard, I got your message. Where is the footage?””

She stopped when she saw Michael.

Her bag slipped from her shoulder.

“Oh, my God.””

Michael stood.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

She stared at him, then at Richard.

“You've found him.””

“No,” Richard replied, his voice shaking.

“He found me.””

Evelyn recovered quickly and opened her laptop.

“I have some news. The footage has been authenticated, and I've identified the anonymous sender.””

Michael's expression changed.

“Who?””

Evelyn turned the screen toward them.

The sender's account had been created using a temporary address, but the recovery number was registered to a phone purchased under Daniel Mitchell's business account.

Richard felt his heart sink.

“Daniel sent us the video?””

“Possibly,” Evelyn replied.

“Or someone with access to his company account.””

Michael leaned closer.

A second file had arrived with the footage.

It contained a scanned document bearing Daniel's signature.

At the top were the words: *Confidential Payment Authorization.*

Beneath them was a payment of $500,000 to a person identified as Gabriel Reyes.

Richard looked at Michael.

Michael went completely still.

“That signature,” he whispered.

“That's the payment Daniel made to the man who helped arrange my disappearance.””

Evelyn looked up.

“Then we have something more important than a family argument.””

She enlarged the bottom of the document.

There, beside the payment authorization, was a handwritten instruction.

*Release the final payment only after Richard Mitchell's property has been transferred.*

Richard stared at the screen.

His son hadn't merely betrayed his brother.

He had been planning to take his father's land while keeping the secret that could destroy them all.

And somewhere in Texas, Daniel had just learned that his dead brother was alive.
