Chapter 2: The Man Who Refused to Beg

Richard Mitchell had spent forty years believing that a man's greatest achievement was raising a good son.

That belief had carried him through his wife's funeral, years of exhausting work, and the long nights when he sat alone at his ranch wondering whether Daniel would ever need him again.

Now, sitting behind the steering wheel of his old pickup truck outside a twenty-four-hour diner, he wondered whether he had wasted his entire life.

Rain tapped against the windshield.

His cheek still burned where Daniel had slapped him.

He looked at his reflection in the rearview mirror and whispered, “What happened to you, son?””

His phone rang.

“Richard?”” a woman's voice asked.

“I'm here, Evelyn.””

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

He described the argument, the missing money, Vanessa's sudden attack, and Daniel's refusal to listen. He didn't exaggerate. He didn't curse. He simply told her what had happened.

When he finished, Evelyn was silent.

Then she asked, “Did you touch her at any point before she grabbed your hand?””

“No.””

“Did she say anything about the missing money before she screamed?””

“She told me I had no right to interfere in her marriage.””

“And what did you say?””

“I told her it was my son's house, and I wouldn't let her keep treating him like a fool.””

Evelyn exhaled.

“Richard, I need you to hear me carefully. Don't contact Vanessa. Don't threaten her.

Don't go back to that house. And don't post anything about this online.””

Richard gripped the steering wheel.

“She has made me look like a monster to my own child.””

“I understand.””

“No, you don't.”” His voice broke.

“I watched Daniel take his first steps. I carried him through a hospital corridor when he broke his arm. I gave him every dollar I had when his company nearly collapsed. Tonight, he looked at me as if I were a stranger.””

Evelyn softened her voice.

“I know how much he means to you. But if Vanessa is deliberately framing you, anger will only give her more ammunition.””

Richard stared at the rain.

“What do you need from me?””

“Everything you have on the missing money. Every bank statement. Every message. Every document showing when you arrived at the house.””

Richard nodded, although she couldn't see him.

“I'll bring it to you tomorrow.””

“And Richard?””

“Yes?””

“There's something else. I received a call this afternoon from a former employee of your son's company. He said Vanessa has been asking questions about your property.””

Richard sat up.

“My ranch?””

“Not just the ranch. He mentioned a document bearing your signature.””

Richard's stomach tightened.

“What document?””

“I don't know yet. But he sounded frightened.””

Richard looked through the windshield at the wet parking lot.

“Evelyn, I have never signed anything giving Vanessa control over my property.””

“Then we need to find out what she's trying to obtain.””

After the call ended, Richard sat motionless.

For years, he had believed Vanessa's ambition was harmless. She liked expensive handbags, luxury vacations, and the kind of house that appeared in glossy magazines. Daniel enjoyed giving her those things, so Richard had never interfered.

But recently, something had changed.

Vanessa had started asking about the ranch.

She wanted to know its exact acreage, whether the mineral rights were included, and how much the land might be worth if sold to a developer.

When Richard refused to discuss it, she laughed.

“It's not as if you're going to farm it forever,” she had said.

He had dismissed the comment.

Now he wondered whether he should have listened.

The following morning, Richard arrived at Evelyn's office at eight o'clock. She was a sharp-eyed woman in her fifties with silver streaks in her dark hair and a habit of reading documents twice.

She placed three photographs on her desk.

“Recognize these?””

Richard leaned forward.

The first showed Vanessa leaving a downtown Houston bank. The second showed her entering a law office. The third showed her sitting in a black SUV with a man Richard had never seen before.

“Who is he?”” Richard asked.

“His name is Marcus Cole. He has a record of fraud investigations in two states. Nothing conclusive enough to convict him of anything related to your family, but enough to make me cautious.””

Richard stared at the photograph.

“Why would Vanessa meet a man like that?””

“That's what we're going to discover.””

Evelyn opened a folder.

“I also checked the company transfers you mentioned. The forty-eight thousand dollars wasn't the only withdrawal. Over the last six months, nearly three hundred thousand dollars has moved through several accounts.””

Richard felt the blood drain from his face.

“Daniel knows?””

“I doubt it. The transfers were disguised as vendor payments.””

Richard lowered himself into the chair.

“Daniel's company could collapse.””

“Unless we find out where the money went.””

Evelyn slid another document across the desk.

“There's more. Three weeks ago, someone requested a valuation of your ranch. The request came through a company registered in Delaware.””

Richard read the name twice.

*Cedar Ridge Development Group.*

“I've never heard of it.””

“Neither had I. But its registered agent is connected to Marcus Cole.””

Richard looked up.

“What does my ranch have to do with the money stolen from Daniel's company?””

Evelyn folded her hands.

“That's the question.””

For the next two hours, they reviewed records, dates, and financial statements. Each new discovery made the picture uglier.

Someone had been preparing for a major transaction.

Someone had been gathering information about Richard's property.

And someone had been moving money out of Daniel's business while ensuring that the missing funds would be difficult to trace.

At noon, Richard's phone rang.

Daniel.

Richard stared at the screen.

Evelyn motioned for him to answer.

“Hello, son.””

Daniel's voice was cold.

“Vanessa wants to know whether you have any documents belonging to her.””

Richard frowned.

“What documents?””

“She says you took some papers from the study yesterday.””

“I took nothing from your study.””

“She says you stole a folder.””

“Daniel, I haven't been in your study.””

There was a pause.

Then Daniel said, “If you have anything belonging to my wife, bring it back.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Son, why are you doing this?””

“Because I don't know what you're capable of anymore.””

The call ended.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

Evelyn watched him.

“What did he say?””

Richard gave a bitter laugh.

“Apparently, I'm a thief now, too.””

Evelyn stood and walked to the window.

“Richard, if Vanessa is building a case against you, every accusation may be designed to make the next one easier to believe.””

Richard looked down at his hands.

“What if Daniel never believes the truth?””

“Then we'll make the truth impossible to ignore.””

At that moment, Evelyn's computer chimed.

An incoming email had arrived from an anonymous address. It contained a single video file and a message.

*You need to see what happened in the Mitchell hallway.*

Evelyn opened the file.

The footage showed the hallway from the security camera above the kitchen entrance.

They watched Vanessa grab Richard's hand, pull it toward herself, tear her blouse, and throw herself onto the floor.

They watched Daniel run in.

They watched the slap.

They watched Richard leave.

When the video ended, Richard covered his mouth.

For the first time since the previous evening, tears filled his eyes.

“There's proof,” he whispered.

Evelyn wasn't looking at him.

She was staring at the final frame.

Someone had paused the recording just before Vanessa grabbed Richard's hand. In the reflection of a framed family photograph, a second person could be seen standing near the kitchen doorway.

Someone had been watching the confrontation.

Someone had not appeared in the hallway when Daniel arrived.

Evelyn enlarged the image.

The figure was partially obscured, but the face was visible enough to make her gasp.

“Richard,” she said slowly.

“Do you recognize that man?””

Richard leaned toward the screen.

His lips parted.

Then he gripped the edge of the desk.

“No,” he whispered.

“That can't be possible.””

May you like

Because the man in the reflection was Daniel's younger brother, Michael.

And Michael had been dead for eleven years.
