Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Lies

Daniel didn't move.

For a moment, the only sound in the coffee shop was the hiss of the espresso machine behind the counter.

Then he slowly pulled out a chair.

"Sit down, Vanessa.""

She shook her head.

"I don't want to do this here.""

"Then you should have told the truth somewhere else eighteen years ago.""

Vanessa looked at Emily.

"Please. You don't know what you're getting into.""

Emily folded her arms.

"Then explain it.""

Vanessa glanced toward the window.

Outside, a black luxury sedan had just pulled into the parking lot.

Daniel noticed her expression.

"Who are you looking at?""

She didn't answer.

The driver's door opened.

An older man stepped out.

He wore a charcoal suit and carried a leather briefcase.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

Robert Hale.

Vanessa's father.

Robert entered the coffee shop without looking at anyone else.

He walked directly toward their table.

"Vanessa," he said, removing his coat.

"I told you not to let this become public.""

Vanessa stood.

"Dad, I tried.""

Robert glanced at Daniel.

"Daniel. It's been a while.""

Daniel didn't return the greeting.

"Apparently, not long enough.""

Robert pulled out a chair.

"Let's not make this unnecessarily dramatic.""

Zoe stepped forward.

"You don't get to decide how dramatic this is.""

Robert looked at her.

"Young lady, I understand you're upset.""

"I'm not upset. I'm asking a question.""

She placed the DNA report on the table.

"Who is my biological father?""

Robert didn't even look at the document.

"That question is not going to improve your life.""

Zoe laughed in disbelief.

"That's not an answer.""

Robert turned to Vanessa.

"Did you explain the situation?""

Vanessa shook her head.

Robert sighed.

"Fine.""

He opened his briefcase.

Inside were several folders arranged in neat stacks.

He removed one and placed it on the table.

"Your mother made a series of poor decisions when she was young. I did what I believed was necessary to protect this family.""

Daniel looked at the folder.

"Protect it from what?""

Robert folded his hands.

"Scandal. Financial consequences. Public embarrassment.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"You're avoiding the question.""

Robert glanced at him.

"Marcus Reed. Still involved in matters that don't concern you, I see.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"They concern me when you use my name to cover up your daughter's lies.""

Robert ignored him.

He turned toward Daniel.

"Do you remember the construction project in Dayton?""

Daniel frowned.

"Yes. Why?""

"Your company was hired to repair several properties owned by my firm.""

Daniel nodded.

He remembered the project.

It had been one of the biggest contracts of his career.

Robert had recommended him for it, and the income had allowed Daniel to buy the house where he and Vanessa eventually raised Zoe.

Robert tapped the folder.

"That project was the beginning of our arrangement.""

Daniel looked confused.

"What arrangement?""

"Vanessa needed stability. You needed financial opportunity. I helped both of you.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Are you saying you paid me to marry your daughter?""

Robert gave a dismissive wave.

"Don't be ridiculous. I simply made sure you had the means to support the household.""

Zoe stared at him.

"Why?""

Robert finally looked directly at her.

"Because your mother was pregnant, and your biological father wasn't an appropriate person to raise you.""

"Who was he?""

Robert paused.

Then he answered.

"Me.""

The word landed like a bomb.

Emily grabbed the edge of the table.

Zoe went completely still.

Daniel stared at Robert.

"What did you just say?""

Robert remained composed.

"I am your biological grandfather, Zoe. But there was a complicated situation involving the timing of your mother's relationships.""

Marcus stood.

"You're saying you're the father?""

Robert nodded.

"And Emily's.""

Vanessa covered her face.

Daniel looked at her.

"You knew?""

She began crying.

"Daniel, I was young. I didn't know what to do.""

Robert interrupted.

"She was protecting the family.""

Zoe took a step backward.

"You're saying my grandfather is my biological father?""

Robert's expression remained cold.

"Biology is rarely as simple as people want it to be.""

Daniel pushed his chair away.

"Don't you dare talk about biology like this is some business arrangement.""

Robert looked annoyed.

"Daniel, calm down.""

"No.""

Daniel's voice was quiet, but everyone at the table heard it.

"You don't get to tell me to calm down after eighteen years of lies.""

Robert opened his briefcase again.

"There's a reason I came here.""

He removed a legal document.

"Vanessa's family trust is being reviewed. There are certain conditions attached to the inheritance. If this information becomes public, the consequences could be considerable.""

Emily stared at him.

"So that's what this is about?""

Robert nodded.

"Your mother and I have spent years protecting the family's reputation.""

Zoe looked at Vanessa.

"Is that why you never wanted me to change my name?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Partly.""

"Partly?""

Robert answered for her.

"Your name is connected to several legal documents. Changing it could complicate matters.""

Daniel frowned.

"What legal documents?""

Robert closed the briefcase.

"That's not relevant.""

Zoe pulled another sheet from her envelope.

"Actually, I think it is.""

Robert's expression changed.

Zoe placed the document in front of him.

It was a certified copy of an old trust agreement.

Daniel leaned forward.

At the top was Robert Hale's name.

Below it were two beneficiaries.

Emily Carter.

Zoe Carter.

But there was something else.

A third name appeared under the heading:

Controlling Trustee.

Vanessa Carter.

Zoe pointed to the final paragraph.

"Mom, you told me you had no control over the trust. But according to this, you've been the controlling trustee since I was born.""

Vanessa stared at the paper.

Robert's jaw tightened.

"Where did you get that?""

"From the attorney who reviewed the hospital records.""

Robert reached for the document.

Zoe pulled it away.

"Don't.""

Daniel studied the page.

"What does this trust have to do with the children?""

Robert hesitated.

Then Emily answered.

"It means there was money set aside for both of us.""

Zoe nodded.

"More than two million dollars.""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"Two million?""

Vanessa started shaking her head.

"It wasn't like that.""

"Then explain it.""

She looked at Robert.

He gave her a warning glance.

But Zoe had already turned to the final page.

"There's a condition.""

Robert stood.

"That's enough.""

Zoe continued reading.

"The beneficiaries were supposed to receive full access to the trust when they turned eighteen, provided their legal identities and parentage records were accurately disclosed.""

Daniel felt a chill run through him.

"Accurately disclosed?""

Zoe nodded.

"Mom never submitted the final verification.""

Emily looked at Vanessa.

"So all this time, you kept the records hidden because you controlled the money?""

Vanessa began crying harder.

"I was trying to protect you!""

Zoe shook her head.

"You were protecting yourself.""

Robert grabbed the document.

"This conversation is over.""

Daniel stood between him and Zoe.

"No. It isn't.""

Robert glared at him.

"Move.""

Daniel didn't.

For eighteen years, he had stepped aside.

He had let Vanessa make decisions.

He had allowed Robert to treat him like an outsider.

He had accepted being called a stepfather by people who had never once shown up for Zoe.

But that version of Daniel was gone.

"You've spent years telling me I wasn't her real father," Daniel said.

"Now I find out you were using both girls to protect a fortune.""

Robert straightened his jacket.

"Be careful, Daniel. You have a modest house, a modest job, and no idea how powerful the people you're confronting can be.""

Daniel looked him in the eyes.

"I have something you don't.""

Robert raised an eyebrow.

"What?""

Daniel glanced at Zoe and Emily.

"Their trust.""

For the first time, Robert looked genuinely unsettled.

That evening, Daniel drove Zoe home.

Emily rode in the back seat, holding the DNA report.

Nobody spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Zoe broke the silence.

"Dad?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Are you angry with me?""

Daniel looked at her through the rearview mirror.

"Why would I be angry with you?""

"Because I brought all this into your life.""

He pulled into a quiet parking lot and turned off the engine.

Then he turned around.

"Listen to me. You didn't create these secrets. You didn't lie to anyone. You didn't take anything from anybody.""

Zoe's eyes filled.

"But everything is falling apart.""

Daniel reached back and took her hand.

"Then we'll build something honest.""

Emily wiped her cheeks.

"Can I ask something?""

Daniel nodded.

"Anything.""

"If the DNA test says you're our biological father... would you want us both?""

Daniel looked at her.

Then he reached for her hand too.

"Emily, I've spent eighteen years wishing I had more time with the people I love. I'm not going to waste another day wondering whether I'm allowed to love you.""

Emily broke down.

Zoe leaned across the seat and hugged her.

For the first time, the three of them felt less like strangers caught in a family scandal and more like a family discovering itself.

But when Daniel's phone rang, that feeling disappeared.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

He answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

"Mr. Carter? My name is Patricia Hale. I'm Vanessa's sister.""

Daniel sat upright.

"Yes?""

"I heard about what happened today. I need you to listen carefully.""

"Why?""

"Because Robert didn't tell you the entire truth.""

Daniel looked at Zoe.

Patricia continued.

"There's another DNA report. One that was completed eighteen years ago.""

Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.

"What report?""

"The hospital's original paternity results.""

Daniel stopped breathing.

"Who was Zoe's father?""

Patricia paused.

Then she said:

"Your name was on the report, Daniel. Both girls' names were.""

He closed his eyes.

"Then why did Vanessa tell me I wasn't Zoe's father?""

Patricia's voice trembled.

"Because she and Robert had already made a deal. And Daniel, there's something else. The money wasn't the only reason they wanted you to stay married to her.""

Daniel looked toward the passenger seat.

Zoe was watching him.

Patricia lowered her voice.

"Robert knew you were the biological father of both girls. But he also knew something about your family history that you never knew yourself.""

Daniel whispered:

"What?""

Patricia answered.

May you like

"Your father was the original owner of the company Robert built his fortune on.""

And then the call disconnected.
