Chapter 4: The Message That Changed Everything
Daniel read the message again.
Zoe may not be the only child whose paternity Vanessa lied about.
For several seconds, the words refused to make sense.
He looked across the auditorium.
Vanessa was standing near the exit, gripping her phone so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. When their eyes met, she immediately looked away.
Daniel approached her slowly.
"Vanessa, what does this mean?""
She swallowed.
"What does what mean?""
He held up his phone.
"Marcus just sent me a message.""
Her expression changed.
"What did he say?""
"Apparently, there's another child.""
Vanessa glanced toward Zoe.
"Not here, Daniel.""
"Then where? We've spent eighteen years having conversations that apparently never included the truth.""
"You're making assumptions.""
Daniel let out a humorless laugh.
"Am I?""
Zoe approached them, still wearing her graduation gown.
"Dad, what's wrong?""
Daniel hesitated.
He didn't want to ruin her graduation day.
But he also didn't want to repeat the mistake of protecting Vanessa's secrets at his daughter's expense.
"Marcus sent me something," he said.
"He claims there may be another child involved.""
Zoe frowned.
"Another child?""
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"He's trying to manipulate you. Marcus has always been irresponsible.""
Zoe looked at her mother.
"Then why are you so scared?""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Daniel Carter?""
"Yes.""
"This is Marcus Reed.""
Daniel turned away from the crowd.
"I've been expecting your call.""
"I know. And I understand you probably hate me already.""
"I don't know you well enough to hate you.""
There was a long silence.
Then Marcus said something unexpected.
"That's probably more than I deserve.""
Daniel glanced at Zoe.
"Why are you contacting me now?""
"Because I found out Vanessa has been telling different versions of the same story to different people. And because there's something you need to see.""
"What?""
"A hospital document from the night Zoe was born.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"I already have some hospital records.""
"Not the original one.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She had gone completely still.
Marcus continued.
"There's a section missing from the copy Zoe received. It contains the names of everyone who was present when the hospital conducted the preliminary examination.""
"Preliminary examination?""
"Daniel, I don't want to explain this over the phone. Can we meet?""
Daniel considered the request.
"Where?""
"There's a coffee shop across from the university. I'll be there in twenty minutes.""
Daniel ended the call.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"You're not meeting him.""
Daniel stared at her.
"That's not your decision.""
"You don't understand what kind of person he is.""
"Then perhaps it's time I did.""
Vanessa reached for his arm.
"Daniel, please. We have a family.""
He gently pulled away.
"That's exactly why I need the truth.""
Twenty-five minutes later, Daniel and Zoe sat across from Marcus in a small coffee shop.
Marcus looked older than Daniel expected.
His hair had turned gray around the temples, and a wedding ring rested on his left hand.
He stood when they approached.
"Daniel?""
"Yes.""
Marcus extended his hand.
Daniel looked at it for a moment before accepting.
"I'm Zoe's father," Marcus said.
Daniel pulled out a chair.
"Which one of us?""
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"That's what we're here to find out.""
Zoe sat between them.
"Mr. Reed, I appreciate you coming. But I need you to understand something.""
Marcus nodded.
"Go ahead.""
"Daniel is my dad. Nothing you tell me today changes that.""
Marcus looked at the young woman wearing the graduation gown.
For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.
Then he nodded.
"I understand.""
He opened a brown folder.
Inside were copies of hospital records, old photographs, and a sealed envelope.
Daniel immediately recognized the hospital logo.
Marcus placed one page on the table.
"This is the original admission record from the night Zoe was born.""
Daniel studied it.
There were three names listed under emergency contacts.
Vanessa Carter.
Marcus Reed.
Daniel Carter.
His eyes stopped.
"My name?""
Marcus nodded.
"You were there that night.""
Daniel frowned.
"Of course I was. Vanessa told me she was having complications. I drove her to the hospital.""
Marcus looked surprised.
"You remember?""
"I remember everything about that night.""
Daniel's voice softened.
"I waited outside the delivery room for six hours. When they finally let me see the baby, I thought she was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.""
Marcus looked down.
"Then you were told I was the father?""
Daniel nodded.
"Vanessa said you had been together before we became serious.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"She told me the opposite. She said you were just a friend helping her through the pregnancy.""
Daniel stared at him.
"She told you that?""
"Yes.""
Zoe looked between them.
"So both of you believed different stories.""
Marcus nodded.
"Exactly.""
He removed another document.
"This is the part I couldn't understand for years.""
At the bottom was a handwritten medical note.
Daniel leaned closer.
The note indicated that a preliminary blood-typing assessment had been requested but never completed.
There was also a signature authorizing the cancellation.
Vanessa Carter.
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"Why would she cancel it?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Because she didn't want either of us to know the answer.""
Zoe frowned.
"But why?""
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Because she was afraid the answer would change everything.""
Daniel leaned back.
"That's not an answer.""
Marcus opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was a faded photograph of a second hospital bracelet.
It carried another name.
Emily Carter.
Daniel stared at it.
"Who is Emily?""
Marcus took a slow breath.
"My daughter.""
Zoe's expression changed.
"Your daughter?""
Marcus nodded.
"She was born three years before Zoe.""
Daniel looked confused.
"How does that involve Vanessa?""
Marcus placed another photograph on the table.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a hospital room, holding a little girl.
Daniel recognized the woman immediately.
The little girl was approximately three years old.
Marcus pointed to the date.
"Vanessa told everyone Emily was my daughter from another relationship. But she wasn't.""
Daniel felt his throat tighten.
Marcus looked directly at him.
"Daniel, Emily was conceived during the same period when Vanessa was seeing both of us.""
Zoe covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
"Are you telling me Emily might be mine too?""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"That's what I've been trying to establish.""
He pushed another document across the table.
It was a request for a DNA test.
But the signature at the bottom wasn't Marcus's.
It belonged to Vanessa.
And beneath her signature were four handwritten words.
Do not contact Daniel.
Daniel stood.
His chair fell backward.
"She knew.""
Marcus looked up.
"Daniel...""
"She knew there was a possibility Emily was mine too.""
Marcus nodded.
"That's what I believe.""
Daniel looked toward the window.
Outside, Vanessa's car was parked across the street.
And she wasn't alone.
A young woman sat in the passenger seat.
Dark hair.
A familiar face.
A university graduation bracelet around her wrist.
Marcus followed Daniel's gaze.
His face drained of color.
"That's Emily.""
Zoe stood beside Daniel.
"Why is she here?""
Marcus whispered the answer.
"Because I told her the truth yesterday.""

Then Emily opened the passenger door and stepped out.
And she was walking straight toward them.
