Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in the Hospital Records
Daniel read the handwriting twice.
His fingers began to tremble.
The message was short.
To Daniel, who deserves to know the truth about the little girl he is holding. — Vanessa.
He looked up.
"Vanessa?""
She immediately reached for the photograph.
"Give me that.""
Daniel pulled it back.
"Why does this say I deserve to know something?""
"Daniel, not now.""
"No. You told me this was a photograph from the hospital. Why did you write this?""
Vanessa glanced toward the audience.
"Lower your voice.""
Daniel stared at her.
For eighteen years, he had accepted her explanations.
He had believed that Marcus was Zoe's biological father, that he had disappeared, and that Vanessa had simply needed help raising a child.
He had never questioned the hospital photograph.
He had never asked why Vanessa had kept it hidden.
But the message on the back suggested that something had happened before he became Zoe's father.
Something Vanessa had deliberately concealed.
Zoe sat beside him.
"Dad, I think you should hear everything.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Sweetheart, what have you found?""
Zoe took a deep breath.
"Three months ago, I needed a copy of my birth certificate for a university scholarship application. The office told me there was a discrepancy in one of the old hospital records.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Zoe continued.
"They said the original file contained additional documents that weren't included in the certified copy Mom had given me.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Additional documents?""
Vanessa's silence answered him.
Zoe nodded.
"I requested the full file. At first, they said it would take several weeks. Then they contacted me and told me there was a sealed note attached to the record.""
Daniel swallowed.
"What note?""
Zoe looked down.
"A letter written by Mom.""
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"That's enough!""
Several people turned.
The announcer was still calling graduate names, but a few nearby families were no longer paying attention to the stage.
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
"We are leaving. Now.""
Zoe didn't move.
"I'm not finished.""
"You're embarrassing this family.""
Zoe's voice remained steady.
"Then maybe you should have thought about that before hiding the truth.""
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
"You're really going to let her do this?""
Daniel stared at her.
"I don't even know what she's talking about.""
"Exactly. Because she doesn't understand.""
"Then explain it to me.""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel slowly removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
"Vanessa, I have spent eighteen years believing I knew my own family. If there's something I don't know, I deserve to hear it.""
Vanessa looked away.
Zoe placed the letter on Daniel's lap.
"Read it.""
He unfolded the paper.
The first line was dated eighteen years earlier.
And the handwriting was unmistakably Vanessa's.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, it means I finally found the courage to tell you something I should have told you before we got married.
You have always believed that Marcus was Zoe's biological father.
But the truth is more complicated than that.
Daniel stopped reading.
He looked at Zoe.
Then at Vanessa.
"What does this mean?""
Zoe's eyes filled with tears.
"Keep reading, Dad.""
He continued.
When I met you, I was already pregnant with Zoe. I told you the dates were complicated, and you never pushed me for details.
You were so kind to me that I became afraid of losing you.
I knew there was a chance Zoe could be yours.
Daniel's hands went numb.
He read the paragraph again.
Then again.
"Vanessa...""
She shook her head.
"Daniel, please.""
He continued reading.
I had been seeing both you and Marcus during that period. I never told either of you the full truth. Marcus believed Zoe was his daughter because I told him she was. You believed she wasn't yours because I told you she wasn't.
When Zoe was born, I was terrified of the consequences.
I chose the explanation that seemed easiest at the time.
Daniel lowered the letter.
The auditorium suddenly seemed too bright.
Too loud.
Too full of people.
He looked at Vanessa.
"Are you saying...""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"I didn't know for certain.""
Daniel stood so abruptly that his chair scraped against the floor.
"You let me believe she wasn't mine?""
"Daniel, I was scared!""
"You told me I wasn't her real father!""
"I didn't know!""
"You told me that every time I tried to be a parent!""
His voice cracked.
Vanessa looked around desperately.
"Please stop shouting.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Do you understand what you're asking me to stop?""
He pointed toward Zoe.
"That little girl called me Daddy when she was two years old. I spent eighteen years wondering whether I was allowed to feel like her father.""
He swallowed hard.
"And you knew there was a possibility?""
Vanessa began crying.
"I was young. I didn't know what to do.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Neither was I. But I stayed.""
Zoe took Daniel's hand.
"There's more.""
He looked at her.
"More?""
She nodded.
"The letter explains why Mom was so determined to keep the two of you from questioning anything.""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Zoe, don't.""
But Zoe continued.
"After I was born, the hospital recommended that both possible fathers be listed for follow-up testing if there was any uncertainty. Mom signed a refusal.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Zoe opened another page.
"Because she had already decided Marcus was my father.""
Daniel sat down slowly.
He felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
For eighteen years, he had been the man who stayed.
He had changed diapers, packed lunches, paid tuition, and sat beside hospital beds.
He had attended every parent meeting.
He had memorized Zoe's favorite foods and learned which songs made her smile.
And all that time, Vanessa might have known that he was more than a stepfather.
She had simply refused to find out.
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
The younger version of himself was holding a newborn Zoe.
He remembered that day.
Vanessa had told him the baby looked like Marcus.
Daniel had smiled and said it didn't matter.
He had never imagined that the words might have been hiding something much bigger.
"Did Marcus know?"" he asked.
Zoe shook her head.
"Apparently not.""
"Where is he now?""
"I don't know. But I found an old address in the records. The lawyer helped me locate him.""
Vanessa's head snapped up.
"You contacted Marcus?""
Zoe nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I wanted the truth.""
Vanessa grabbed her handbag again.
"You had no right to involve him!""
Zoe looked at her mother with disbelief.
"You involved him eighteen years ago when you told him he was my father.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Do you know what this could do to your life?""
Zoe nodded.
"Yes. That's why I decided to do it before college.""
Daniel looked at the letter.
"Did you tell Marcus what you found?""
"Yes.""
"Did he respond?""
Zoe hesitated.
Then she reached into the envelope.
"There was one more thing.""
She pulled out a printed email.
Daniel noticed the sender's name.
Marcus Reed.
The subject line read:
I need to speak to Daniel.
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
"What's this?""
Zoe handed him the page.
"I received it last night.""
He read the first sentence.
Daniel, I don't know how to apologize for eighteen years of silence, especially when I now understand that you may have been lied to as much as I was.
Daniel looked up.
"May have been?""
Zoe nodded.
"The lawyer said a DNA test could finally answer the question.""
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"No. Absolutely not.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because it's unnecessary!""
"How can you say that?""
"Because DNA doesn't change who raised her!""
Daniel stared at her.
For the first time, he heard the irony in her words.
Only minutes earlier, she had insisted that he wasn't Zoe's real father because they weren't biologically related.
Now she was arguing that biology didn't matter.
Zoe stood between them.
"Mom, you can't use biology when it helps you and dismiss it when it doesn't.""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"You don't understand what you're doing.""
Zoe's voice softened.
"I understand that I love the man who raised me.""
She turned toward Daniel.
"And I understand that he deserves to know the truth.""
A few minutes later, the ceremony ended.
Families flooded the aisles, taking photographs and hugging graduates.
Daniel remained seated.
The honorary stole was still around his neck.
Zoe crouched beside him.
"Dad, we can leave if you want.""
He looked at her.
"Do you want to?""
"No.""
"Then we'll stay.""
She smiled faintly.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the necklace.
"I bought this for you because I wanted you to remember something.""
Zoe took it.
"What?""
"That no matter what any paper says, no matter what any test says, I chose to be your dad every single day.""
Zoe hugged him.
"And I choose you too.""
Behind them, Vanessa stood holding her phone.
Her makeup had begun to run.
She watched the two of them embrace, then quickly looked down when another parent approached.
"Vanessa, that was such a touching moment," the woman said.
"You must be incredibly proud.""
Vanessa forced a smile.
"Of course.""
The woman glanced at Daniel.
"He's a wonderful man. You can tell how much that girl loves him.""
Vanessa's smile stiffened.
"Yes. Daniel has always been very involved.""
The woman nodded.
"You're lucky to have him.""
Vanessa didn't respond.
Her phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen.
An unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then a message appeared.
This is Marcus. I know about the graduation. I need to tell you what happened the night Zoe was born.
Vanessa's fingers went cold.
A second message followed.
And Daniel needs to know why you refused the original DNA test.
She stared at the screen.
Then another notification appeared.
This one contained a photograph.
It showed an old hospital document.
At the bottom were three signatures.
Vanessa's.
Marcus's.
And Daniel's.
Vanessa's breathing became shallow.
She zoomed in.
The date was eighteen years earlier.
And beside Daniel's signature was a sentence she had never expected him to remember:
I consent to any testing necessary to establish paternity.
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
He was standing with Zoe near the auditorium doors.
The stole still hung around his neck.
The necklace rested in Zoe's palm.
Then Daniel's phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
A message from an unfamiliar number appeared.
Daniel Carter, this is Marcus Reed. I owe you an explanation. But before you hear anything from Vanessa, there's something you should know.
Daniel opened the message.
The next sentence made his knees weaken.
Zoe may not be the only child whose paternity Vanessa lied about.
He looked up slowly.
May you like
Across the room, Vanessa was already watching him.
And for the first time in eighteen years, Daniel realized that the woman he had trusted with his heart might have been hiding a secret far bigger than Zoe's birth certificate.
