Chapter 8: The Heir Beneath the Lies
Ethan stared at Claire.
“One of his sons?””
She looked startled by her own words.
“I meant one of his children.””
“No. You said sons.””
Grant's smile returned.
“An understandable slip, considering how much misinformation has circulated over the years.””
Ethan turned on him.
“Who is the alternate successor?””
Grant tapped the blacked-out section of the document.
“That information is contained in the original trust instructions. Unfortunately, those instructions were removed from the archive.””
“By you.””
“That's your opinion.””
Claire took a step toward Ethan.
“Don't let him distract you. He's trying to make us fight over an inheritance while he walks away with the company.””
Grant gave her a mocking bow.
“An excellent speech. Did you rehearse it with your attorney?””
Claire ignored him.
“Your father kept a private ledger of the transfers. If we find it, we can prove where the money went and why he changed the succession instructions.””
Ethan remembered the gold key his mother had kept hidden for four years.
“The safety deposit box.””
Claire looked at him sharply.
“Your mother has the key?””
“She did.””
“Then we need to get to the bank.””
Grant laughed.
“You're too late.””
He pulled out his phone and showed Ethan a photograph of a bank vault entrance.
“Someone has already attempted to access the box this morning. The bank placed a temporary hold after receiving a dispute notice.””
Ethan's stomach tightened.
“Who filed the notice?””
Grant didn't answer.
Claire snatched the phone from his hand.
The notice carried the name of a law firm representing a company called Whitmore Strategic Holdings.
“That's the shell company,” she said.
“The one receiving the transfers.””
Grant took the phone back.
“Careful, Claire. You're starting to sound as though you understand corporate finance.””
“Enough to know you're a thief.””
Grant's expression turned vicious.
He seized her wrist and twisted her arm behind her back.
“Say that again.””
Claire cried out.
Ethan grabbed Grant by the collar and shoved him away.
“Touch her again, and you'll leave this chapel in handcuffs.””
Grant stumbled against a pew.
For several seconds, the men glared at each other.
Then Grant laughed.
“You still think you can threaten me with the police? I have the board, the trust administrator, and a signed declaration that says you're mentally unfit. By lunchtime, you'll be removed from your own company.””
Ethan straightened his jacket.
“Not if I expose you first.””
“Expose what? A forged prenup? A disputed medical assessment?
A dead man's voicemail? You have suspicions, Ethan. I have documents.””
He turned toward the chapel doors.
“Enjoy your wedding day.””
Before he could leave, Ethan spoke.
“Grant.””
Grant paused.
“If you have nothing to hide, why did you use my credentials to access the trust archive last night?””
The smile vanished.
Ethan continued.
“Why did you delete my father's succession file? Why did you forge a declaration of incapacity? And why did you need Victoria to sign a witness statement?””
Grant's face darkened.
“Because your father made provisions that could have destroyed everything.””
The admission escaped before he could stop it.
Silence swallowed the chapel.
Grant realized what he had said.
Then he smiled again, but the damage was done.
Ethan stepped forward.
“What provisions?””
Grant backed toward the doors.
“You'll never find them.””
He pulled the doors open and disappeared into the corridor.
Ethan started after him, but Claire grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
“Let go.””
“That's what he wants. He wants you angry enough to make a mistake.””
Ethan stopped.
She released his sleeve.
“Your father knew Grant would manipulate you through your temper. He wrote about it in the letter he sent my mother.””
Ethan took a slow breath.
“What else did he write?””
Claire pulled another envelope from her purse.
“This was attached to the letter. I didn't understand it until I saw the succession document.””
Inside was a single sheet of paper covered in Richard Carter's handwriting.
Three sentences had been underlined.
The ledger is not in the bank.
The heir is not the person everyone expects.
When the wedding bells ring, look beneath the foundation.
Ethan read the lines again.
“Beneath the foundation of what?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know.””
His phone rang.
Daniel.
Ethan answered immediately.
“Tell me you have something.””
“I do. The board meeting has been moved forward. They're voting on your removal in ten minutes.””
“Can they do that?””
“Not without the trust administrator's approval. But Grant has produced a certificate claiming that voting control has already transferred.””
“Can you challenge it?””
“I'm trying. The trustees want the original succession instructions before they suspend the transfer.””
Ethan glanced at the paper.
“When the wedding bells ring, look beneath the foundation.””
“Ethan, what?””
“Get to my father's study. Search the floor beneath his desk. Look for anything unusual.””
“Why?””
“Because my father left us a clue.””
Daniel hesitated.
“There's something else. The company security team found a second access log from last night. Someone entered the old archive room at 1:52 a.m.””
“Who?””
“Your mother.””
Ethan froze.
“My mother was at home.””
“That's what she told us. But the badge log says her security card was used to enter the archive.””
“Could someone have copied it?””
“Possibly. The cameras were disabled for six minutes.””
Ethan looked at Claire.
“Someone is still moving through the company using our family's identities.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“Grant has been preparing this for years.””
Ethan ended the call.
He and Claire hurried out of the chapel and into the corridor. Guests had begun gathering near the entrance, whispering about the delay. A photographer tried to approach, but Ethan ordered security to clear the hall.
He found Madison near the service entrance, speaking urgently to Daniel over the phone.
When she saw him, she rushed forward.
“Ethan, your mother is missing.””
His heart lurched.
“What?””
“She left the estate twenty minutes ago. She said she was going to get something from her house, but the driver says she never arrived.””
“Did she take the key?””
Madison nodded.
“And she left this.””
She handed him a folded note.
Ethan recognized Eleanor's handwriting.
Ethan, I am sorry. I should have told you sooner. Your father made me promise to protect the original ledger, even if it meant keeping secrets from you.
Grant knows where I hid it. If he finds it before you do, there will be nothing left to save.
Look beneath the foundation.
Ethan read the note twice.
Then he looked at Madison.
“Can you contact her?””
“Her phone is off.””
Claire stepped closer.
“Where would your father hide something important?””
Ethan closed his eyes, trying to remember.
His father had loved old buildings. He often said that a structure's greatest strength was the part nobody ever noticed. When Ethan was a child, Richard had taken him to the original Carter Industries warehouse, a brick building near the waterfront that had been converted into the company's first headquarters.
Beneath the building was a sealed maintenance chamber.
His father had once told him that the chamber contained the foundation stones from the company's first construction project.
“There's an old warehouse,” Ethan said.
“The original headquarters.””
Madison grabbed her purse.
“Then we go there.””
Daniel's voice came through the phone.
“Ethan, don't go anywhere without security. Grant has just issued an alert saying you're attempting to interfere with the trust transfer.””
“Let him issue whatever he wants.””
“That's not all. The board has received a second document.””
“What document?””
“A statement from Victoria claiming you threatened her this morning and attempted to force her to sign a financial agreement.””
Ethan felt a bitter laugh rise in his throat.
“She's protecting Grant.””
“There's more. She says you became violent after discovering her private correspondence.””
Claire shook her head.
“He's using her to make you look unstable.””
Ethan looked down at his hands.
The plan was becoming clear. If he reacted angrily, Grant could point to the declaration and Victoria's statement as evidence of instability. If he stayed silent, Grant would seize the company.
Either way, the clock was running.
“Send the board a statement that I'm contesting the filings and preserving evidence of fraud,” Ethan said.
“Nothing more.””
“Understood.””
“And Daniel? Find my mother.””
“I will.””
Ethan ended the call.
The three of them hurried toward the estate's private garage.
As the car pulled onto the road, Claire sat beside Ethan in silence. Madison watched the mirrors, checking for anyone following them.
After several minutes, Claire spoke.
“There's something I haven't told you.””
Ethan looked at her.
“What?””
“My mother didn't just receive money from your father. She was given shares in Carter Industries.””
Ethan frowned.
“How many?””
“Enough to make her a significant shareholder.””
“Why wasn't that disclosed?””
“Because the shares were held in a private trust under her name. After she died, the ownership was supposed to pass to me.””
Ethan stared at her.
“Then you may already have a legal claim to the company.””
“Not if the trust was altered.””
Claire looked out the window.
“That's why Grant wants the ledger. It contains the original ownership records. If the records are accurate, he has been hiding a major shareholder for years.””
The car slowed as they approached the old waterfront district.
The warehouse stood behind a rusted iron fence, its brick walls darkened by rain and age. A sign bearing the Carter Industries name hung crookedly above the entrance.
Ethan stepped out and stared at the building where his father had begun his empire.
“This place has been locked for years,” he said.
Madison approached the side door.
“Then why is the lock new?””
Ethan looked closer.
The old brass lock had been replaced by a modern electronic keypad.
Someone had been here recently.
He entered the access code from his father's old security records.
The door clicked open.
Inside, dust floated through shafts of afternoon sunlight. The warehouse smelled of damp wood, rust, and old paper.
They crossed the main floor toward the central support structure.
Claire held up the letter.
“Look beneath the foundation.””
Ethan knelt beside the stone platform that supported the original warehouse machinery. Along the base, a thin line of fresh scratches marked one of the stone panels.
He pressed against it.
Nothing happened.
Madison ran her fingers along the edge.
“There's a seam here.””
Together, they shifted the panel aside.
Behind it lay a narrow metal compartment.
Inside was a black ledger, a sealed envelope, and a small brass key.
Ethan reached for the ledger.
Then he heard the sound of a gun being cocked behind him.
“Step away from the compartment,” a man's voice ordered.
Ethan slowly raised his hands.
Grant Whitmore stepped out from behind a support pillar.
He wasn't smiling anymore.

“Thank you for finding it for me,” he said.
And beside him stood Eleanor Carter, her wrists bound with plastic restraints.
