Chapter 5: The Woman in White

Ethan didn't touch the document.

He studied Victoria's face instead.

She had once told him that the best way to recognize a lie was to watch what happened when someone had nothing left to gain.

Now he watched her stand in his mother's bedroom, wearing a wedding gown worth more than a house, while holding evidence that could strip him of the company his father had built.

“Did you forge my signature?”” Ethan asked.

Victoria sighed as though he had disappointed her.

“That's a very serious accusation.””

“Answer the question.””

“I didn't forge anything.””

“Then explain why my signature appears on a declaration I never signed.””

She placed the folder on the table.

“Your lawyers prepared the paperwork. You approved the general terms weeks ago. If someone made an administrative error, that's not my responsibility.””

Madison stepped forward.

“You were in his office at 2:13 this morning.””

Victoria turned toward her.

“And you were supposed to be at your apartment, not interfering in a private family matter.””

“I saw the documents you carried out.””

“You saw nothing.””

“I saw you use a security token to access the trust archive.””

Victoria's expression sharpened.

“Be careful, Madison. You left Carter Industries under a confidentiality agreement. If you disclose proprietary information, I can make sure you never work in this industry again.””

Madison's hands trembled, but she didn't retreat.

“You've been threatening me for months. I'm done being afraid of you.””

Victoria gave a short, humorless laugh.

“Bravery is easy when someone else pays the price.””

Ethan stepped between them.

“Enough. Victoria, I want the truth.””

For the first time, she looked genuinely angry.

“The truth? You want the truth now? After three years of making every decision without asking what I wanted?””

“What you wanted was never a secret. You wanted to marry me.””

“Yes,” she snapped.

“I did.””

“Or you wanted my money?””

Her expression changed.

It wasn't guilt.

It was offense.

“You think you're so different from every other wealthy man because you occasionally remember to ask a woman about her feelings. You buy a building, put your name on it, and call it generosity. You give someone a necklace and expect gratitude for the rest of their life.””

Ethan's face tightened.

“I never asked you to be grateful.””

“No. You asked me to love you.””

She laughed bitterly.

“And you thought that was enough.””

Eleanor rose from the bed.

“Victoria, my son gave you everything he could.””

Victoria turned toward her.

“He gave me what he wanted me to have.””

She gestured toward the room.

“Your son has never understood what it means to have no power. Every door opens for him. Every mistake gets forgiven. Every person in his life is expected to wait until he decides they're important enough.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Is that why you agreed to marry me?””

Victoria looked back at him.

“At first, I told myself it was.””

The admission landed like a slap.

She continued before he could speak.

“Then I fell in love with you. Or something close enough that I could pretend it was love. You were kind when nobody was watching.

You remembered small things. You listened to me complain about my job and never made me feel stupid for it.””

For one brief moment, Ethan saw the woman he had loved.

Then she closed the distance between them.

“But loving you never changed the fact that you would always own everything and I would always have to ask.””

“So you decided to take it.””

“I decided to stop asking.””

Madison shook her head.

“You didn't just take money. You helped Grant build a case to declare Ethan incompetent.””

Victoria's jaw tightened.

“Grant told me the declaration was a precaution.””

“A precaution?”” Ethan repeated.

“He said you were under enormous pressure. He said the board was worried about your judgment. He told me that if you continued working at this pace, you'd eventually destroy the company and yourself.””

“And you believed him?””

Victoria looked away.

“He showed me documents.””

“Forged documents?””

“I don't know!””

Her voice cracked.

For the first time, her composure faltered.

“He showed me medical reports, internal emails, and statements from people who claimed you'd become unpredictable. He said your father had been afraid you'd lose control of the business.””

“My father trusted me.””

“Your father is dead, Ethan. You don't know what he thought.””

Eleanor recoiled.

“How dare you?””

Victoria turned on her.

“You want to know how this started? Ask Grant why he kept telling me that Ethan would never marry someone without money of her own. Ask him why he promised me that if I helped him secure the trust, I'd never have to depend on anyone again.””

The room fell silent.

Ethan felt the pieces shifting.

Grant had promised Victoria power. Victoria had given him access. Both had convinced themselves they were entitled to something that belonged to Ethan.

But one question remained.

“Why did you enter my office last night?””

Victoria's eyes flickered toward the folder.

“I was looking for a document.””

“Which one?””

“The original trust instructions.””

“Why?””

“Because Grant said the document contained a provision that could invalidate the entire restructuring.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“And did you find it?””

Victoria didn't answer.

Madison looked at the folder.

“What's in there?””

Victoria immediately pulled it toward herself.

“Nothing that concerns you.””

Ethan reached for it.

She jerked it away.

“Don't touch me!””

He stopped.

The shout echoed through the room.

For several seconds, Victoria stood breathing hard, her white gown spread around her feet like spilled paint.

Then she slowly placed the folder on the table.

“You want the truth?”” she whispered.

“Fine. Grant told me that once the marriage was official, he'd arrange for you to sign a temporary management agreement. He said it would be easier if the agreement came from me because you'd trust me.””

“And if I refused?””

“He said you'd have no choice.””

“Because of the incapacity declaration?””

Victoria nodded.

Ethan felt sick.

“You knew he planned to take control of the company.””

“I knew he planned to restructure it.””

“Don't insult me.””

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

The single word was barely audible.

Eleanor turned away, covering her mouth.

Ethan looked at the woman who had promised to stand beside him through every hardship.

“You could have come to me.””

“And told you what? That your best friend wanted to control your company? That the man you trusted more than anyone had spent a year manipulating us both?””

“You could have told me.””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.””

“Of losing me?””

She didn't answer.

“Of losing the money,” Ethan said.

Victoria's silence was enough.

Ethan stepped back.

“Leave the estate.””

She stared at him.

“Ethan—”

“Leave.””

“You can't throw me out like this. The ceremony is scheduled. Hundreds of guests are here. The press is waiting outside.””

“Then they'll have something to write about.””

Victoria's expression hardened.

“If you cancel this wedding, Grant will activate the next stage.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What next stage?””

She pressed her lips together.

“Victoria.””

Her eyes shifted toward Madison.

Then she whispered, “The trust transfer isn't the only thing he arranged.””

Ethan felt his pulse quicken.

“What else?””

Before she could answer, the lights in the room flickered.

Daniel appeared in the doorway, breathing hard.

“Ethan, we have a problem. The board has received an emergency notice claiming you've been declared medically unfit to serve as CEO.””

Ethan turned toward him.

“Who sent it?””

“Grant. He's calling an emergency board meeting in twenty minutes.””

“On what authority?””

Daniel held up his tablet.

“He says the trust has already transferred temporary voting control to an independent administrator.””

“That's impossible. The filing is under investigation.””

“There's another document.””

Daniel's face was grim.

“It's a signed authorization allowing Grant to assume operational control if your marriage creates a material conflict of interest.””

Ethan looked at Victoria.

She was staring at the floor.

“You knew,” he said.

She shook her head.

“Not all of it.””

“Enough of it.””

“I swear to you, Ethan, I didn't know he could do this without your actual consent.””

Ethan turned away.

“Get her out of my sight.””

Victoria didn't move.

Instead, she looked up at him, and the expression on her face frightened him more than her earlier anger.

“Ethan, listen to me. Grant isn't doing this because he wants your company.””

“Then why?””

She swallowed.

“Because your father left something behind. Something Grant has spent years trying to find.””

Ethan stared at her.

“What did my father leave?””

Victoria opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, a phone rang inside the leather folder.

It wasn't hers.

Ethan recognized the ringtone immediately.

It belonged to his father's old private phone, which had disappeared shortly before his death.

Victoria reached for the folder, but Ethan was faster.

He pulled out the phone.

Its screen displayed a single incoming call.

*GRANT WHITMORE.*

Ethan answered.

Grant's voice came through, smooth and unhurried.

“Congratulations, Ethan. I suppose I should still call you my partner.””

Ethan gripped the phone.

“What did my father leave behind?””

A pause.

Then Grant laughed softly.

“Ask your mother what happened the night your father died.””

The call ended.

Ethan turned toward Eleanor.

May you like

She had gone completely still.

And for the first time in his life, his mother looked at him as though she was afraid of what he might discover.
