Chapter 2: The Woman Waiting Outside the Chapel

Ethan listened to the recording three times.

The first time, he thought he had misunderstood.

The second time, he recognized every inflection in Grant's voice.

The third time, he stopped searching for an innocent explanation.

His best friend had been discussing his destruction almost a year before the wedding.

The recording continued for another forty seconds, but the final portion was distorted by static. Ethan caught fragments about a contract, a trust, and a woman whose name was never spoken.

Then the file ended.

He sat motionless at his father's desk while the wedding music drifted faintly through the open window.

His phone rang.

Grant Whitmore.

For several seconds, Ethan stared at the screen.

Then he answered.

“Morning, partner,” Grant said cheerfully.

“How does it feel to be a married man in waiting?””

Ethan looked at the flash drive.

“Not married yet.””

“Give it a couple of hours. Victoria has been asking the event staff whether you're ready every five minutes.””

“Is she nervous?””

“Wouldn't you be? She's marrying the most stubborn man in California.””

Grant laughed.

Ethan remembered being seventeen and laughing with him in the back of a police cruiser after they had accidentally set off a fire alarm at a private school. Grant had taken the blame even though Ethan had been the one who started the prank.

For years, Ethan had considered that moment proof of a friendship that could survive anything.

Now he wondered whether loyalty had simply been another investment.

“Grant,” Ethan said, “do you remember the investment structure we discussed for the European division?””

“Of course.””

“Did you ever change the ownership provisions?””

“No. Why?””

“Just checking.””

There was a pause.

“Is something wrong?”” Grant asked.

“Why would something be wrong?””

“You sound different.””

Ethan forced a laugh.

“I'm about to get married. Maybe I'm having second thoughts.””

“Don't be ridiculous.”” Grant's voice sharpened for half a second before smoothing out again.

“Victoria is perfect for you.””

“Perfect?””

“Beautiful, intelligent, patient. She puts up with your obsession with work. What more could you want?””

Ethan watched sunlight move across the desk.

“Someone honest.””

Silence.

Then Grant chuckled.

“Careful, my friend. You're starting to sound like a man who needs a drink.””

“I'll see you at the chapel.””

“Wouldn't miss it.””

The call ended.

Ethan immediately sent a message to Daniel.

*Secure every copy of the prenup. Find out who accessed my office at 2:13 a.m. Don't alert Grant.*

A second message followed.

*Locate Madison Reed. I need to speak with her privately before the ceremony.*

He pocketed his phone and returned to the corridor.

The estate had transformed into a machine of flowers, cameras, and carefully choreographed excitement. Caterers hurried between rooms. Photographers positioned themselves beside marble columns. A makeup artist rushed past carrying a case of cosmetics.

Nobody knew that the groom had just discovered evidence of a conspiracy.

Nobody except the people who might be involved.

As Ethan descended the staircase, Victoria appeared at the far end of the hall.

She wore a white silk robe over her wedding gown. Her dark hair fell in loose waves around her shoulders, and a diamond necklace rested against her collarbone.

For a moment, Ethan forgot the recording.

She looked exactly like the woman he had imagined standing beside him for the rest of his life.

Then she smiled.

“Finally,” she said, walking toward him.

“I've been trying to find you.””

“Had some things to take care of.””

“On our wedding morning?””

She slipped her arm through his.

“Ethan, you promised me today would be about us. No business calls, no contracts, no emergencies.””

He looked down at her hand resting against his sleeve.

“Do you remember the night we met?””

Victoria blinked.

“Of course.””

“What did I say to you?””

She laughed softly.

“You told me you hated charity auctions because rich people used them to congratulate themselves.””

“That wasn't what I asked.””

Her smile faltered.

“You said you wanted to meet someone who wasn't impressed by your money.””

Ethan felt a small, painful twist in his chest.

It was almost right.

He had actually said he wanted to meet someone who could tell him when he was being an idiot.

Victoria had laughed and told him she would happily volunteer.

It was a small detail. An insignificant mistake.

Except she had spent three years claiming that night was the beginning of their love story.

“Are you all right?”” she asked.

“I'm fine.””

She studied his face.

“Did Daniel tell you something?””

Ethan kept his expression neutral.

“Why would Daniel tell me anything?””

“Because he has never liked me.””

“Daniel doesn't have to like you.””

Victoria's fingers tightened around his arm.

“That's a horrible thing to say to your future wife.””

“Is it?””

She released him.

For the first time that morning, her eyes turned cold.

“Ethan, I know your family has always made me feel like an outsider. Your mother never approved of me. Your lawyers treat me like a criminal. Even your employees look at me as though I'm trying to steal something.””

“Are you?””

The question escaped before he could stop it.

Victoria stared at him.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

“How could you ask me that?””

She turned away, pressing her fingertips against her lips.

Ethan watched her shoulders shake.

Every instinct he possessed urged him to comfort her. He wanted to apologize, take her hand, and believe that he had simply allowed fear to poison the happiest morning of his life.

Then he remembered the recording.

Once the wedding is over, Ethan will sign whatever Grant puts in front of him.

He remained where he was.

Victoria slowly turned back.

“Is this about the prenup?”” she asked.

Ethan's pulse quickened.

“What about it?””

“You were supposed to sign the final copy last night. My lawyer said your team was making changes again.””

“Which copy did your lawyer approve?””

“The one your attorneys sent.””

“And did you read it?””

Her expression shifted.

“Of course I did.””

“Every page?””

Victoria stared at him for a beat too long.

“Ethan, what is this? An interrogation?””

“No. A conversation.””

She stepped closer and lowered her voice.

“I love you. I agreed to sign a prenup because I wanted you to feel safe. But if you keep treating me like a suspect, I don't know how we're supposed to start our marriage.””

The words were polished, almost perfect.

Yet Ethan noticed she had not answered his question.

Before he could press her, a woman appeared at the end of the corridor.

Madison Reed.

She wore a pale blue dress and carried a small silver clutch. Her face was unusually pale, and she kept glancing toward the staircase as though she expected someone to appear behind her.

“Victoria,” Madison said, “the wedding coordinator needs you.””

Victoria exhaled sharply.

“Tell her I'll be there in a minute.””

“It's urgent.””

“Then she can wait.””

Madison looked at Ethan.

Their eyes met.

Something passed between them, a flash of fear so unmistakable that Ethan knew she had come for a reason.

Victoria noticed it too.

She stepped between them.

“Madison, why are you looking at him like that?””

“I'm not.””

“You are. Have you been talking to Daniel?””

Madison's lips parted, but no words came out.

Victoria took her by the wrist.

“Come with me. We need to discuss something.””

Madison pulled free.

“No.””

The single word rang through the corridor.

Victoria went rigid.

Ethan had never seen anyone refuse her so directly.

Madison looked at him again.

“Mr. Carter, could I speak with you alone?””

Victoria let out a disbelieving laugh.

“Are you serious? He's my fiancé.””

“That's exactly why.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Victoria leaned toward Madison and whispered something Ethan couldn't hear.

Whatever it was, it worked.

Madison flinched as though she had been struck.

“Don't,” she whispered.

Victoria straightened and smiled at Ethan.

“She's exhausted. The wedding has been stressful for everyone.””

“Then she'll be able to speak for herself,” Ethan replied.

He turned toward Madison.

“Come with me.””

Victoria grabbed his hand.

“Ethan, don't do this.””

He looked at her fingers wrapped around his.

“Do what?””

“Let other people interfere with us.””

He gently removed her hand.

“Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.””

He led Madison into the old study and shut the door.

For several seconds, she stood beside the desk without speaking. Her fingers trembled around the silver clutch.

Ethan poured a glass of water and placed it before her.

“Madison, I found a forged version of my prenup. I also found a recording of Victoria discussing my destruction with Grant Whitmore.””

The glass slipped from her hand.

It shattered against the floor.

Madison stared at him.

“You found the recording?””

“Yes.””

She covered her mouth.

“Oh, God.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“What do you know?””

Madison sank into a chair.

“I wanted to tell you months ago. I tried. But every time I got close, Grant found a way to stop me.””

“How?””

She reached into her clutch and pulled out a folded document.

It was a copy of an internal Carter Industries memo, signed by Grant and dated six months earlier.

Ethan recognized the company letterhead.

He also recognized the authorization number at the bottom.

It belonged to a restricted account established by his father.

“What is this?”” he asked.

Madison swallowed.

“Grant didn't just help Victoria get close to you.””

She looked toward the locked door.

“He arranged your first meeting. He paid the charity that hosted the auction. He knew exactly where you'd be standing and made sure Victoria would be there.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Why?””

Madison's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Victoria wasn't the first woman he tried to use against you.””

A sound came from the other side of the door.

Someone had stopped in the hallway.

Madison went silent.

Ethan moved toward the door, but she grabbed his sleeve.

“Please,” she whispered.

“If Grant knows I've told you this much, he'll destroy the evidence before we can prove anything.””

“Madison, what else aren't you telling me?””

She looked up at him.

May you like

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“Grant Whitmore is not trying to steal your company, Ethan. He's trying to make sure you never discover who really owns it.””
