Chapter 5: The Second House

The next morning, Daniel Reeves arrived at our house carrying two thick folders and a laptop.

Rachel had stayed overnight.

I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the handwritten note beneath the loan guarantee.

She knows nothing.

At 8:15, Daniel placed the folders on the dining table.

“I've obtained preliminary records from the lender and public property filings,” he said.

I poured coffee into three cups.

“Have you found out what the second property is?””

“Yes.””

He opened his laptop.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

A large brick house with white columns, a landscaped driveway, and a swimming pool.

It looked like something from a luxury real estate brochure.

“Where is this?”” I asked.

“Westbrook Heights. About forty minutes from here.””

“Who owns it?””

Daniel turned the screen toward me.

“According to the current records, Whitmore Family Assets LLC.””

I stared.

“Marcus bought another house?””

“Apparently.””

“With our money?””

“That's what we're investigating.””

Rachel leaned closer.

“Why would he buy a second house while secretly transferring money out of their investment account?””

Daniel opened another document.

“The property was purchased eleven months ago for approximately $890,000.””

I looked at the date.

Eleven months.

Almost exactly when Marcus said his relationship with Vanessa had begun.

My stomach twisted.

“Was she living there?””

Daniel clicked on a photograph attached to the property listing.

A woman stood on the front steps, holding a set of keys.

Vanessa.

I recognized her cream-colored coat.

“That's her.””

Rachel swore under her breath.

Daniel continued.

“The mortgage application lists Mr. Whitmore as the primary applicant. Mrs. Whitmore is listed as a guarantor.””

I stared at the screen.

“I never applied for a mortgage.””

“That's another issue we'll investigate.””

“Does Vanessa own the house?””

“Not according to the public filing. The company owns it. But we found evidence that she may have been using it as her residence.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Marcus had bought a house for his mistress.

And I had apparently guaranteed the loan.

“Was our money used for the down payment?””

Daniel opened a bank statement.

“An initial transfer of $210,000 went from your joint investment account to Whitmore Family Assets LLC. Three days later, the company transferred $175,000 to the property closing account.””

Rachel sat back.

“Oh, my God.””

I felt sick.

I remembered the day Marcus had told me he wanted to invest more aggressively.

He had shown me property photographs and spoken about retirement.

I had trusted him.

I had even encouraged him.

“Can you show me the complete transaction history?”” I asked.

Daniel nodded.

He projected a spreadsheet onto the laptop.

There were dozens of transfers.

Some were small.

Others were enormous.

$12,500.

$37,000.

$85,000.

$120,000.

I recognized several dates.

Christmas.

My birthday.

The anniversary of my father's death.

Each transaction was a small betrayal hidden beneath an ordinary day.

“Where did the remaining money go?”” I asked.

Daniel pointed to a column.

“Several transfers went to accounts associated with the company. Others went to a business named Meridian Capital Services.””

“Is that one of Marcus's companies?””

“Not directly. We're checking the ownership records.””

Rachel picked up her phone.

“I'm calling your bank.””

Daniel raised his hand.

“Let's coordinate that carefully. We need to make sure any protective measures are requested by the appropriate account holders and documented correctly.””

I nodded.

He opened another folder.

“This is the document that concerns me most.””

It was a copy of the mortgage application.

I read the first page.

My name.

My employment history.

My previous income.

My current residential address.

Then I reached the section titled SPOUSAL CONSENT.

My signature was there.

But something else caught my attention.

The application listed my occupation as financial director of Whitmore Family Assets LLC.

I had never worked for that company.

“I've never been employed there.””

Daniel nodded.

“I suspected that.””

“Who submitted this?””

“The application was transmitted through a mortgage broker.””

“Can we contact them?””

“We have already requested the application file and supporting records.””

He pointed to the income declaration.

“There's a salary listed here.””

I read it.

$18,500 per month.

I almost laughed.

“Marcus never paid me that.””

“It's possible the lender was given an inflated employment declaration. We need to establish who prepared it and what documents supported it.””

Rachel looked furious.

“He invented a job for her?””

“That's one possibility,” Daniel replied.

I rubbed my forehead.

“Why would he do this?””

Daniel closed the laptop halfway.

“Perhaps the company needed to demonstrate sufficient income and assets to qualify for financing. But I don't want to speculate before we have the original records.””

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I stared at his name.

Daniel nodded.

“You can answer, but don't agree to anything. Keep the conversation calm.””

I pressed the green button.

“Hello?””

“Eleanor, we need to talk.””

“About what?””

“The mess you created yesterday.””

I looked at Daniel.

“I'm not sure what you're referring to.””

Marcus sighed.

“Don't play games. Daniel Reeves is making threats against my business.””

“He's reviewing documents bearing my signature.””

“You're making accusations you can't prove.””

“Then why are you angry?””

Silence.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Listen carefully. I need you to sign a correction form.””

My stomach tightened.

“What correction form?””

“The property transfer. It was filed incorrectly. Signing the new version will fix everything.””

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately shook his head.

“I'm not signing anything without my lawyer reviewing it.””

Marcus's voice sharpened.

“Your lawyer is the reason this is getting out of control.””

“My lawyer is the reason I understand what's happening.””

“Eleanor, I built everything we have.””

“And apparently you built it using my name.””

He went quiet.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

“You think Vanessa is the problem? She's not.””

I gripped the phone.

“What does that mean?””

“She was just helping me.””

“With what?””

“You'll understand soon enough.””

“Marcus, what are you hiding?””

He laughed.

“Ask your sister what she knows about the money.””

My eyes moved toward Rachel.

She looked confused.

“What does Rachel have to do with this?””

“Ask her.””

The call ended.

I lowered the phone.

Daniel watched me.

“What did he say?””

I repeated the conversation.

When I mentioned Rachel's name, her expression changed.

“That's ridiculous,” she said.

I looked at her.

“Is there something I should know?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No. I haven't had anything to do with Marcus's business.””

Daniel stood.

“Let's not jump to conclusions. But we should examine every relevant transaction.””

He opened the bank statement again.

Then he stopped scrolling.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

“What?””

He turned the laptop toward me.

A transfer appeared in the transaction history.

$65,000.

Recipient: Rachel Bennett.

Date: Six months earlier.

I stared at the screen.

Rachel stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

“I never received that money.””

Daniel enlarged the transaction details.

The recipient account number was partially concealed.

Rachel leaned over the table.

“That isn't my account.””

I looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

“Eleanor, I swear.””

Daniel printed the page.

“Then we need to determine whether this was a misdirected transfer, an account opened using someone else's information, or something else.””

Rachel looked devastated.

“Marcus is trying to make it look like I took your money?””

I couldn't answer.

Because suddenly, I understood something.

Marcus wasn't simply hiding an affair.

He was building a story.

A story in which I had authorized the transactions, my sister had received money, and every suspicious document could be explained as part of an arrangement we had supposedly agreed to.

He was preparing to make us look responsible for his actions.

Daniel closed the folder.

“I'm going to request the original account-opening records and transaction instructions.””

I looked at Rachel.

She was crying now.

“I would never do that to you.””

I took her hand.

“I know.””

Then my phone vibrated.

An email from the mortgage broker.

Subject: *Additional Documentation – Whitmore Family Assets*

There was one attachment.

I opened it.

It contained a copy of my supposed employment contract.

At the bottom was a signature from someone I recognized immediately.

My sister's.

Rachel stepped closer.

Her face went white.

May you like

“That isn't my signature.””

And beneath her name was a clause stating that she had personally verified my identity and witnessed my consent to the loan.
