Chapter 4: The Debt He Put in My Name

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel Reeves stood beside the coffee table, holding the loan guarantee. Rachel had one hand pressed against her mouth. Vanessa was staring at Marcus as though she had just discovered that the man she loved was a complete stranger.

And Marcus?

He was watching me.

Not with regret.

Not with fear.

With the expression of a man calculating how much damage he could still control.

“Give me that document,” he said.

Daniel didn't move.

“It's evidence relevant to my client's financial interests.””

“It's my company's document.””

“Your wife's name appears as the personal guarantor.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“She's my wife. Everything we own is connected.””

I stepped forward.

“Did you borrow $1.4 million using my name?””

“It's not what you think.””

“Then explain it.””

“Eleanor, you don't understand business financing.””

“I understand the difference between signing a loan guarantee and never agreeing to one.””

Marcus threw his hands up.

“I was protecting our future!””

“Whose future?””

He looked toward Vanessa.

She immediately stepped away from him.

“Don't look at me,” she said.

“You told me the business was debt-free.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“Vanessa, stay out of this.””

“You said the money was coming from investors. You said you were buying commercial properties.””

“I am.””

“With whose money?””

He didn't answer.

Daniel placed the guarantee on the table.

“Mr. Whitmore, I need to ask whether you received any compensation from the lender or an affiliated company.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“That's none of your business.””

“It becomes my client's business if her identity or property was used to secure the transaction.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What happens if I really am responsible for that debt?””

“We'll investigate the circumstances under which the guarantee was created, whether it was properly executed, and whether the lender relied on it. You should not assume you're liable simply because your name appears on a document. But we need to act quickly.””

My knees felt weak.

Rachel pulled out a chair.

“Sit down, Ellie.””

I sat.

Marcus began pacing.

“You're making this much worse than it needs to be.””

I looked up.

“Worse than what? Having a mistress? Losing our savings? Discovering you may have forged my signature on a million-dollar loan?””

He stopped.

“Watch your accusations.””

Daniel calmly interjected.

“My client is entitled to question documents bearing her signature.””

Marcus pointed at him.

“I'm not discussing this with you.””

“Then you can discuss it through counsel.””

The words seemed to irritate him more than anything else.

He grabbed his coat.

“I'm leaving.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I'm coming with you.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“I need answers.””

“You're not leaving with me because of some paperwork.””

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

“You told me Eleanor had signed over the house. You told me I would have a place here. You told me the business was worth millions.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“And it will be.””

“When?””

“Soon.””

“You've been saying soon for six months.””

She looked at me.

For a moment, our eyes met.

There was no friendship between us. She had knowingly entered my marriage. But now I recognized something in her expression.

Fear.

She had believed Marcus's promises just as I had once believed his.

“I want my money back,” she said.

Marcus frowned.

“What money?””

“The $48,000 I transferred to your investment company.””

My head snapped toward her.

Daniel immediately looked up.

“Which company?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Whitmore Family Assets.””

Daniel took out his notebook.

“When did you make that transfer?””

“About five months ago.””

“And why?””

“Marcus said he needed short-term capital. He promised to repay me with interest.””

Marcus shook his head.

“This is unbelievable.””

Vanessa pulled out her phone.

“I have the transfer confirmation.””

She showed it to Daniel.

He photographed the screen.

Then he asked a question that made Marcus go completely still.

“Did Mr. Whitmore tell you who owned the company?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said Eleanor was just a name on the paperwork. He told me she didn't participate in the business.””

I felt the room close around me.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“That's interesting.””

Marcus reached for Vanessa's arm.

“Come on. We're going.””

She pulled away.

“Don't touch me.””

Then she turned toward the door.

Before leaving, she looked at me.

“I knew about you,” she said.

“I'm not going to pretend I didn't. But I didn't know about the money.””

I didn't respond.

The door closed behind her.

Marcus remained in the living room.

“You've made a terrible mistake, Eleanor.””

I looked at him.

“No. I made one eight years ago.””

His face darkened.

“Don't threaten me.””

“I'm not threatening you.””

I glanced at the documents.

“I'm finally reading what you've been doing.””

He walked out without another word.

Daniel waited until we heard the front door shut.

Then he gathered the papers.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I need you to understand that this may be bigger than an affair or a marital financial dispute.””

“How much bigger?””

“I don't know yet. But the loan, the transfers, the company structure, and the property application may be connected.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“What should we do?””

“Secure the records. Notify the relevant financial institutions through proper channels. Review the credit and property records. And don't sign anything Marcus sends you.””

I nodded.

Daniel paused.

“There is one more thing. The handwritten note.””

He showed me the last page again.

She knows nothing.

I traced the words with my eyes.

“Why would he write that?””

Daniel examined the ink.

“I don't know. But I'd like to know when it was written and who had access to this document.””

He placed it inside a protective folder.

Then his phone rang.

He answered, listened, and his expression tightened.

“Understood. Please send the records securely.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“The lender has confirmed that a payment is overdue.””

“How much?””

“Three months.””

I stared at him.

“And?””

He hesitated.

“They have already initiated preliminary collection procedures.””

My fingers went numb.

“Against Marcus?””

Daniel looked down at the guarantee.

“Against the borrower first. But your name appears on the guarantee.””

Then he delivered the sentence that made my blood run cold.

“They're preparing to enforce the security against the property listed in the agreement.””

He turned the page toward me.

It wasn't just our house.

There was another address.

May you like

A property I had never seen.

And my name appeared on that one, too.
