Chapter 3: The Lawyer at Our Front Door
At 6:42 p.m., I heard Marcus's car pull into the driveway.
I was sitting in the living room beside Daniel Reeves.
Rachel sat across from us, holding a folder containing copies of the financial records.
The house smelled of fresh coffee and the lemon polish I had used on the dining table.
Everything looked exactly as it had the night before.
The anniversary decorations were still there.
The cake had been moved into the refrigerator.
Only one thing had changed.
I was no longer waiting for Marcus to explain himself.
The front door opened.
Marcus walked in carrying a bottle of red wine.
Vanessa followed him.
She wore a cream-colored coat, black heels, and a small gold necklace.
She looked around the living room before noticing Daniel.
Her smile disappeared.
Marcus stopped.
“What is this?””
I stood.
“Good evening, Marcus.””
His eyes moved from me to Daniel.
“Who invited him?””
“I did.””
“Why?””
“Because we have some financial matters to discuss.””
Marcus gave a short, humorless laugh.
“Eleanor, I told you we would discuss this privately.””
Daniel rose from his chair.
“Daniel Reeves. I'm representing Mrs. Whitmore.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“She's my wife.””
Daniel nodded.
“And she's entitled to independent legal advice.””
Vanessa looked between them.
“Marcus, what's going on?””
He placed the wine on the console table.
“Nothing. Eleanor is being dramatic.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told me yesterday that Marcus said I had agreed to sign everything over.””
She stiffened.
Marcus turned sharply.
“Why are you discussing private conversations with her?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“Because you told me she knew.””
I looked at her.
“Did he tell you he owned this house?””
“Yes.””
“Did he tell you he was planning to transfer it to you?””
She hesitated.
Then she nodded.
Marcus interrupted.
“This is ridiculous. Vanessa, don't answer her questions.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mr. Whitmore, I suggest everyone remain calm. We have documents to review.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What documents?””
Daniel opened the folder.
“First, the formation records for Whitmore Family Assets LLC.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“That's a legitimate business entity.””
“I'm aware. Your wife is listed as a fifty-percent owner.””
“Exactly.””
“She says she never consented to the formation documents or authorized you to execute financial transactions in her name.””
Marcus looked at me.
“You signed them.””
“No, I didn't.””
“You knew I was restructuring our investments.””
“You told me the documents were routine paperwork.””
“Because they were.””
Daniel placed the operating agreement on the table.
“Then you should have no objection to explaining this clause.””
Marcus didn't move.
Daniel pointed to the page.
“It states that Mrs. Whitmore granted you authority to pledge her ownership interest in jointly held property as collateral for business obligations.””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
“You said the house was completely yours.””
Marcus snapped his head toward her.
“Not now.””
Daniel continued.
“There's also a financial authorization bearing Mrs. Whitmore's signature. She denies signing it. We intend to verify its authenticity.””
Marcus laughed again.
“You people watch too much television.””
I stared at him.
“Where did you get my signature?””
He looked at me.
“From documents you signed years ago.””
The room went silent.
Daniel slowly lifted his head.
“Are you saying you copied her signature onto these documents?””
Marcus seemed to realize what he had said.
“No. I'm saying I had authorization.””
“Then please provide it.””
“I don't have to explain my business to you.””
Daniel closed the folder.
“That's your choice. However, my client will be taking steps to protect her interests.””
Marcus turned toward me.
“You brought a lawyer into our home?””
“Yes.””
“Against your own husband?””
“You brought another woman into our marriage.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Marcus took a step closer.
“You have no idea what you're doing, Eleanor. You don't understand how complicated our finances are.””
“I understand that $328,000 has disappeared from our investment account.””
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
“Where did you get that number?””
“From the statements.””
“Those statements are incomplete.””
“Then explain them.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“She's been going through my private business records?””
Daniel answered calmly.
“The account is jointly held. Mrs. Whitmore has a right to examine records concerning her own financial interests.””
Marcus grabbed the folder.
Daniel held on to it.
“Please don't remove my client's documents.””
For a moment, I thought Marcus might actually tear the pages apart.
Then he released them.
Vanessa stepped closer to him.
“Marcus, you told me everything was settled.””
“It is settled.””
“You said the transfer was already approved.””
I turned toward her.
“What transfer?””
She looked uncomfortable.
Marcus glared at her.
“Vanessa, stop talking.””
But she had already started.
“You said Eleanor had agreed to give up the property. You told me the paperwork was just waiting for the final processing.””
My mouth went dry.
Daniel reached into the folder and removed the property transfer application.
“Is this the document you're referring to?””
Vanessa looked at it.
“Yes.””
Marcus moved toward him.
“Put that away.””
Daniel didn't.
“Mr. Whitmore, this application names Vanessa Reed as the proposed recipient of the property at this address. Mrs. Whitmore's signature appears on the authorization page.””
I stared at the document.
My name.
My address.
My supposed consent.
I felt as if the room were tilting.
“Marcus,” I whispered, “you were transferring our house to her?””
He rubbed his jaw.
“It was a temporary arrangement.””
“What does that mean?””
“It's complicated.””
“Then make it simple.””
He looked at Vanessa.
She looked back at him.
Neither spoke.
Daniel turned another page.
“There's a notarization attached to this application. The same notary appears on the financial authorization documents.””
I looked at him.
“Patricia Coleman?””
“Yes.””
Marcus's expression turned cold.
“Daniel, you're overstepping.””
“I'm identifying documents that my client disputes.””
Marcus walked toward the fireplace.
Then he turned around.
“Fine. You want the truth? The company needed collateral.
The property transfer was part of a larger financial arrangement. Vanessa was going to help me secure a business opportunity.””
I stared at him.
“By taking my house?””
“Our house.””
“You just said you needed collateral.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I was going to reverse the arrangement once the deal closed.””
“Why wasn't I told?””
“Because you would have panicked.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You told me Eleanor had signed.””
Marcus spun toward her.
“She did sign.””
“No, she didn't,” I said.
He pointed at me.
“Enough!””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Mr. Whitmore, lower your voice.””
Marcus took a breath.
Then he looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not embarrassment.
Contempt.
“You really think this lawyer is going to save you? You don't even know what you've agreed to over the years.””
I felt a chill move through my arms.
“What are you talking about?””
He smiled without warmth.
“Your name is on more than one document, Eleanor.””
Daniel immediately reached for the folder.
“Which documents?””
Marcus glanced at him.
Then he looked back at me.
“The house isn't the only thing you signed away.””
My stomach dropped.
“I never signed anything.””
Marcus picked up his wine bottle.
“You'd be surprised.””
He walked toward the front door.
Vanessa remained standing beside the sofa.
“Marcus,” she said quietly.
“You told me there was no debt.””
He stopped.
“What?””
She pulled a folded sheet of paper from her handbag.
“You said the business was profitable. You said the property was just a temporary investment.””
Daniel looked at the paper.
“May I see that?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she handed it to him.
He unfolded it.
His eyes moved across the first paragraph.
Then his expression changed.
“Mrs. Whitmore,” he said quietly.
“What?””
He turned the page toward me.
It was a loan guarantee.
A substantial one.
The borrower was Whitmore Family Assets LLC.
The guarantor was Eleanor Whitmore.
And beneath my name was a signature dated seven months earlier.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Mr. Whitmore, did you obtain your wife's informed consent to this guarantee?””
Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa took a step backward.
Daniel examined the final page.
Then he spoke in a voice so controlled that it frightened me more than shouting would have.
“Mrs. Whitmore, this document suggests that your personal assets may have been pledged against a debt of nearly $1.4 million.””
I couldn't breathe.
“That's impossible.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I need to verify the underlying agreement and the lender's records immediately.””
Marcus reached for the document.
Daniel pulled it away.
“Don't touch that.””
I stared at my husband.
Eight years ago, I had promised to stand beside him through everything.
I had never imagined that he might use my name to put everything I owned at risk.
Then Daniel turned to the last page.
There was a handwritten note beneath the signature.
Three words.
May you like
She knows nothing.
And beside those words was Marcus's initials.
