Chapter 9: The Account Rachel Never Closed

Daniel arrived at Evelyn's house just before noon.

He carried a laptop, several printed bank records, and a document that he placed directly in front of me.

"Marcus, I need you to look at this carefully.""

The document showed the account activity connected to Rachel's name.

I had seen the latest transfer.

But now Daniel had obtained additional records through the bank's preliminary fraud investigation.

There were dozens of transactions.

Some were small.

Others were enormous.

The first suspicious withdrawal had occurred four months after Rachel died.

The amount was $8,500.

The destination account belonged to Thomas Reed.

Three weeks later, $6,000 had been transferred to Vanessa Carter.

Then another $14,000.

Then $9,500.

I looked up.

"How much has been taken?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"Approximately $176,000 over three years, subject to verification.""

Evelyn covered her mouth.

I stared at the papers.

"Rachel's account was supposed to be closed.""

"It should have been," Daniel replied.

"The bank is investigating how Reed maintained access.""

"Can we recover it?""

"Possibly. But the immediate priority is preserving the evidence and preventing additional transfers.""

I stood.

"That money belonged to Jordan.""

"Some of it may have been designated for him, but we need to establish the legal ownership of every account before making that determination.""

I paced toward the window.

Vanessa had charged my son $450 every month.

She had refused to feed him.

She had made him sleep in a storage room.

And all the while, she had been taking money connected to his mother's estate.

My hands shook.

"She was taking money from Rachel while pretending to help raise Rachel's son.""

Nobody answered.

Daniel opened his laptop.

"There's another development. Patricia has provided a preliminary statement.""

He turned the screen toward us.

The statement described how Vanessa had approached her with a proposal to gain control of Jordan's inheritance.

According to Patricia, Vanessa claimed that I was emotionally unstable and financially irresponsible.

She also claimed Jordan was difficult to manage and needed residential intervention.

Patricia admitted that she had helped prepare the placement paperwork.

But she insisted she hadn't known the signatures were forged.

Evelyn let out a bitter laugh.

"Convenient.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's why her statement needs to be corroborated.""

He opened another file.

It contained a list of payments from Vanessa to Patricia's company.

The largest payment was $12,000.

Another was $7,500.

A third was $4,750.

There were also payments to a company called Reed Financial Administration.

I pointed to the screen.

"That's Thomas's company.""

"Yes.""

Daniel opened the corporate record.

The company had been dissolved two years earlier.

But its bank account remained active.

"How can a dissolved company still receive money?"" I asked.

"That is one of the questions investigators will need to examine.""

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice spoke.

"Marcus Williams?""

"Who is this?""

"Thomas Reed.""

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately gestured for me to put the call on speaker.

"What do you want?""

"I believe we need to clear up a misunderstanding.""

I almost laughed.

"There's no misunderstanding. You've been accessing my late wife's bank account.""

"Your wife authorized me to manage certain financial matters.""

"Rachel died three years ago.""

"Some arrangements continue after death.""

"Not without legal authority.""

Thomas sighed.

"You're making accusations based on incomplete information.""

"Then explain the $176,000.""

Silence.

Then he said:

"Vanessa has been helping you more than you realize.""

My stomach tightened.

"Helping me steal from my son?""

"Your son is not entitled to everything you think he is.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

I gripped the phone.

"What does that mean?""

Thomas continued.

"Rachel established arrangements that you never understood. Vanessa was trying to make sure the money went where it belonged.""

"Then why did she forge my signature?""

"That is a matter between you and your wife.""

"Why did she arrange to have Jordan removed?""

"Because the boy needs professional support.""

I felt my blood boil.

"He's fourteen.""

"Exactly. He doesn't understand what money can do to people.""

I stared at the phone.

"You're talking about him as if he's an investment.""

Thomas's voice became cold.

"Marcus, listen carefully. You have no idea how complicated Rachel's financial arrangements were. If you continue digging, you may discover things you don't want to know.""

"What things?""

The line went silent.

Then Thomas ended the call.

Daniel immediately saved the call details and added the recording to the evidence file.

Evelyn looked shaken.

"He's threatening us.""

"Yes," Daniel said.

"And he appears to know more about Rachel's estate than he's admitting.""

At 1:20, Laura arrived.

She had spoken with the school, the police, and the relevant child protection professionals.

"Jordan is safe here," she said.

"The school has been informed that no disputed placement document should be accepted without independent verification.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

Laura turned toward Daniel.

"Have you received the court's updated response?""

He nodded.

"Yes. The temporary restrictions remain in place. Vanessa cannot make unilateral decisions concerning Jordan's placement or financial arrangements under the disputed paperwork.""

I finally felt that we had gained some ground.

Then Laura handed me another document.

"This is a notice Vanessa's attorney sent this morning.""

I read the heading.

*PETITION FOR TEMPORARY SEPARATION OF MINOR CHILD FROM FATHER.*

I stared at it.

"She's still trying?""

Laura nodded.

"She claims you have become obsessed with the financial investigation and that Jordan's emotional well-being is at risk because of the conflict.""

I shook my head.

"She's the one who created the conflict.""

"I know. We have evidence supporting your position. But we need to prepare for the hearing.""

Jordan appeared in the doorway.

"Are you talking about me again?""

I folded the document.

"Just paperwork, buddy.""

He came closer.

"Is Vanessa going to court?""

Laura crouched slightly so she was at his eye level.

"There may be a hearing about where you should live, Jordan. But you aren't responsible for what the adults have done.""

He nodded.

Then he looked at me.

"Can I tell the judge about the storage room?""

My throat tightened.

"Yes. If you're asked, you can tell the truth.""

"Can I tell them about the rent?""

"Yes.""

"And the dinners?""

"Yes.""

He looked down.

"Will they believe me?""

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Sweetheart, you don't have to make anyone believe you by changing your story. You simply tell the truth.""

Jordan nodded.

Then he walked back toward the guest room.

I watched him disappear down the hallway.

Laura quietly said, "He's been carrying this for a long time.""

I nodded.

"Too long.""

At 3:05 p.m., Daniel received another message from Patricia.

She had located a second folder on an old company server.

The folder was titled:

*WILLIAMS — FINAL CONTINGENCY.*

Daniel opened the files.

The first document contained a proposed financial transfer arrangement.

The second contained a draft statement from Vanessa claiming that Rachel had verbally authorized her to manage Jordan's inheritance.

The third was an email exchange between Vanessa and Thomas.

Thomas had written:

"If the boy remains with Marcus, we cannot complete the transfer. The grandmother is also a problem because she has the original trust documents.""

Vanessa replied:

"Then we separate the father and grandmother from him. Once he's placed, we can deal with the money.""

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

It was dated two days before our wedding.

Thomas had written:

"Are you certain Marcus won't discover your previous connection to Rachel?""

Vanessa's response was only one sentence.

"By the time he finds out, he'll be too emotionally invested to walk away.""

I felt something inside me break.

She had known exactly who I was.

She had known about Rachel.

She had known about Jordan.

And she had married me anyway.

Evelyn quietly sat beside me.

"Marcus...""

I shook my head.

"She never loved us.""

My mother didn't contradict me.

Daniel continued examining the folder.

Then he found an audio file.

Its title was:

*VANESSA — MEETING RECORDING — OCTOBER 14.*

The recording had apparently been captured during a meeting between Vanessa, Thomas, and Patricia.

Daniel played it.

At first, there was background noise.

A chair moving.

A door closing.

Then Vanessa's voice.

"Marcus still thinks I married him because I wanted a family. He's never going to understand what this was about.""

Thomas laughed.

"And the boy?""

Vanessa answered:

"The boy is the problem. If he had no inheritance, none of this would be necessary.""

Patricia asked:

"What if he refuses to cooperate?""

Vanessa replied:

"Then we make sure he has nowhere else to go.""

There was a pause.

Then Thomas said something that made Evelyn grab my arm.

"What about the original Rachel file?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"That file must disappear. If anyone finds it, they'll understand what really happened before she died.""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the laptop.

"What is the original Rachel file?""

Daniel looked at the audio's metadata.

"It appears to refer to another document stored on the company server.""

Peter, the digital specialist, searched the archived folders.

After several minutes, he found a file with a password-protected attachment.

Its title was:

*RACHEL WILLIAMS — INCIDENT REPORT.*

I looked at Evelyn.

She was trembling.

"Marcus," she whispered.

"What?""

"Rachel told me she had received a warning shortly before her death. She said someone had been following her.""

I stared at the screen.

The file remained locked.

Peter examined its properties.

"The document was created three weeks before Rachel died.""

I felt my heart pound.

"Can you open it?""

"I'm working on it.""

A progress indicator appeared.

Then the file opened.

The first page contained a photograph of Rachel's damaged car.

The second page contained a report of an incident that had never been mentioned in the official family paperwork.

And the third page contained a name.

*VANESSA CARTER.*

Beneath it was a handwritten note:

*PERSON OF INTEREST — POSSIBLE CONNECTION TO FINANCIAL FRAUD AND VEHICLE INCIDENT.*

I looked at my mother.

She covered her mouth.

For three years, I had believed Rachel's death was a tragic accident.

Now, for the first time, I had evidence that someone might have been investigating circumstances surrounding it.

Daniel closed the laptop.

"Marcus, we need to stop here. This evidence must go directly to the investigators. We cannot determine from this file alone whether Vanessa had anything to do with Rachel's death.""

I nodded.

But my mind was racing.

Then my phone rang.

It was the hospital where Rachel had been treated.

A woman introduced herself as a medical records administrator.

"Mr. Williams, we received a formal request for your wife's archived records. There's a discrepancy we'd like to clarify.""

"What discrepancy?""

"The original next-of-kin information was changed shortly before your wife's death.""

My blood ran cold.

"Changed by whom?""

The woman paused.

Then she read the name.

"Vanessa Carter.""

I stared at the phone.

Vanessa hadn't simply entered my life after Rachel died.

She had apparently been connected to Rachel's affairs before that day.

And now, after three years, someone was finally looking at the records she had tried to change.

The woman continued.

"Mr. Williams, there's something else. The person who requested the change also left a note instructing the hospital to contact a private medical representative if your wife became unable to communicate.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Who was the representative?""

The administrator checked the record.

Then she answered.

"Thomas Reed.""

I slowly lowered the phone.

Evelyn was crying.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, I realized that the inheritance might not have been Vanessa's only reason for targeting our family.

Rachel had discovered something.

May you like

Something serious enough that she had tried to leave evidence behind.

And Vanessa had spent three years trying to make sure nobody ever found it.
