Chapter 4: The Appointment I Never Agreed To

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The document lay open on my mother's dining table, its final page displaying an appointment that could destroy everything I had spent years protecting.

Thursday. 2:00 p.m.

Private psychiatric assessment.

Patient: Marcus Williams.

Requested by: Vanessa Williams.

I read the information again, hoping I had misunderstood something.

I hadn't.

"Mom, how can she arrange something like this without my permission?""

Evelyn picked up her phone.

"She may not have arranged a legitimate medical appointment. We need to find out exactly what she submitted.""

My phone rang.

Daniel Brooks.

I answered immediately.

"Daniel, you've seen the document?""

"I have. I want you to understand something. A request for an assessment doesn't automatically mean anyone can force you into treatment or declare you incompetent. But the surrounding circumstances suggest Vanessa may be trying to manufacture evidence.""

"She wants me to look unstable.""

"Exactly. And if she succeeds in creating a convincing paper trail, she could use it in the guardianship proceedings.""

I looked at my mother.

"What do we do?""

"First, don't attend any appointment arranged without your consent. Second, preserve every communication. Third, we need to know who is behind this private facility.""

Daniel paused.

"There's one more thing. I found the source of the signature on the temporary guardianship document.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who signed it?""

"The electronic signature was submitted through an account associated with your home internet connection. The document also contains a verification number linked to Vanessa's mobile phone.""

I closed my eyes.

"She forged it.""

"That's what the preliminary evidence suggests. We'll have it independently examined.""

After the call, Evelyn helped me organize the documents.

We separated the evidence into three groups: financial transfers, forged guardianship paperwork, and communications concerning Jordan's placement.

At 10:30, we drove to Daniel's office.

He was waiting in a conference room with another attorney, a woman named Laura Mitchell, who specialized in family law and child protection matters.

Laura reviewed the documents carefully.

"Marcus, I need to ask you something. Has Jordan ever been physically threatened by Vanessa?""

"Not that he's told me.""

"Has she prevented him from contacting you?""

"She hasn't physically stopped him, but she's repeatedly told him that speaking up would destroy our marriage.""

Laura wrote something down.

"And the storage room?""

"I found him sleeping there two nights ago.""

"Do you have photographs?""

"Yes.""

I showed her the pictures I had taken.

She examined the narrow mattress, the plastic drawers, and the ventilation fan.

Her expression tightened.

"Has he been receiving adequate meals?""

"Apparently not. He told me she sometimes refused to let him eat dinner because he hadn't paid his rent.""

Laura put down her pen.

"That needs to be documented. A child should not be required to pay rent or earn access to food in his own home.""

She explained that we should arrange an independent welfare assessment for Jordan, preserve his school records, and seek urgent legal protection against any unauthorized transfer.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

"Mrs. Williams, you mentioned a private residential facility.""

My mother handed her the brochure.

Laura studied the name.

"Northridge Youth Residential Center.""

She typed something into her computer.

After several minutes, she leaned back.

"This is interesting.""

"What?"" I asked.

"The facility advertises itself as a behavioral intervention center, but the company handling its referrals is registered under a different name.""

"Patricia Hale's company?""

Laura nodded.

"Apparently.""

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"Can you find out who owns it?""

"Not immediately. But I can request the relevant corporate records and investigate whether the referral arrangement is legitimate.""

I leaned forward.

"I want Jordan protected before Friday.""

Laura nodded.

"We'll move as quickly as possible.""

At that moment, my phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

*We need to talk. Come home. We can fix this if you stop listening to Evelyn.*

I showed it to Daniel.

He shook his head.

"Don't respond emotionally. Keep everything.""

Another message arrived.

*I know where Jordan is. You cannot hide him from me forever.*

Then a third.

*Remember, Marcus. People are already asking questions about your mental health.*

I felt my jaw tighten.

Laura took the phone and photographed the messages.

"That's useful evidence. Don't engage.""

We spent another hour preparing the emergency filings.

By lunchtime, Laura had submitted a request for immediate protective restrictions and a notice challenging the authenticity of the guardianship paperwork.

I felt slightly better.

But I still couldn't shake the feeling that Vanessa had something else prepared.

At 1:15 p.m., Evelyn's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

"Unknown number.""

She answered on speaker.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Is this Evelyn Williams?""

"Who is calling?""

"My name is Patricia Hale. I believe we need to discuss Jordan.""

My mother exchanged a glance with me.

"Why are you calling?""

"I understand there has been some confusion about the placement arrangements.""

Evelyn's expression became icy.

"There's no confusion. Jordan is a fourteen-year-old child, and nobody has permission to remove him.""

Patricia sighed.

"Mrs. Williams, I understand you're emotionally invested. But Vanessa has provided documentation showing that the family is experiencing serious difficulties.""

"Vanessa has also provided forged signatures.""

A pause.

Then Patricia laughed softly.

"That's a serious accusation.""

"Then you shouldn't have any problem cooperating with an investigation.""

Her tone changed.

"Perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

"No.""

"You're making this much harder than it needs to be.""

My mother leaned toward the phone.

"Let me make something clear. Jordan is not a package you can transfer from one building to another.""

Patricia went silent.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Mrs. Williams, the boy's situation is already beyond your control.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

"She just admitted she knows about the transfer.""

Evelyn nodded.

"And she knows we're investigating.""

Laura immediately advised us to document the call and avoid further direct contact.

We left the office at 3:40 p.m.

Jordan was at Evelyn's house, sitting at the dining table and working on a science project.

When he saw me, he looked up.

"Dad, can I stay here tonight?""

I put my briefcase down.

"Of course.""

He hesitated.

"Will Vanessa come here?""

I sat beside him.

"Nobody is taking you anywhere without the proper legal process. And I'm making sure you're protected.""

Jordan nodded.

Then he asked quietly, "Dad, did I do something wrong?""

My chest tightened.

"No, buddy.""

"Because Vanessa says everyone would be happier if I wasn't around.""

I pulled him into a hug.

"Your mother loved you more than anything. I love you more than anything. And Grandma loves you. You belong with people who want you here.""

He buried his face against my shoulder.

That evening, after Jordan went to bed, Evelyn and I sat in the living room.

She was reviewing the bank records when she suddenly stopped.

"Marcus.""

"What?""

"Look at this.""

She pointed to a transaction dated six weeks earlier.

It wasn't another transfer.

It was a payment to a company called Meridian Family Solutions.

The amount was $4,750.

The payment reference contained two words:

*BACKGROUND PREPARATION.*

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Evelyn turned the page.

Beneath the transaction was a note recovered from an email attachment.

It read:

*Phase One: Establish father as emotionally unstable.*

*Phase Two: Secure temporary placement for minor.*

*Phase Three: Obtain financial control.*

My hands went cold.

Then I noticed the date beside Phase One.

It was dated almost four months before Vanessa had first mentioned Jordan's rent.

She hadn't suddenly become cruel because she was frustrated with a teenager.

She had been preparing something long before I realized anything was wrong.

And the next page contained a photograph of me leaving my office building.

May you like

Someone had been watching me.

For months.
