Chapter 6: The Trap Waiting at Two O'Clock

By 12:30 p.m., Daniel had contacted the appropriate authorities and submitted the evidence concerning the alleged forged documents and unauthorized financial activity.
He also arranged for a lawyer to accompany me if any further contact occurred with the private assessment facility.
But the situation was moving faster than I expected.
At 12:47, my office receptionist called.
"Marcus, there's a woman here asking for you.""
"Who?""
"She says she's from a medical assessment service.""
My stomach tightened.
"What is her name?""
"Dr. Elaine Foster.""
I looked at Evelyn.
"Tell her I'm unavailable.""
The receptionist hesitated.
"She says she has paperwork showing you're expected at two.""
I lowered my voice.
"Do not give her any information about my schedule. Ask her to leave the documents at reception.""
A few minutes later, I received a photograph.
It showed a cream-colored envelope with my name printed across the front.
Inside was a letter requesting my attendance at a psychiatric assessment.
The document claimed I had agreed to undergo an evaluation after concerns raised by my wife.
At the bottom was a signature.
Mine.
Or something designed to look like mine.
Evelyn studied it.
"That's the same forgery technique.""
"How can you tell?""
"Look at the spacing. You always leave a small gap between your first and last name. Whoever created this didn't.""
I examined it.
She was right.
"She's getting desperate.""
"No," Evelyn said quietly.
"She's getting closer to whatever she's planned.""
At 1:10 p.m., Daniel arrived at my mother's house.
He carried a briefcase and looked unusually serious.
"I've spoken with the facility.""
"And?""
"They have no record of you personally requesting an appointment. They have a referral submitted by Vanessa.""
"So the appointment is fake?""
"Not necessarily. They may have opened a file based on information she provided. But they have no authority to detain you simply because your wife requested an assessment.""
I felt some relief.
"Then we don't go.""
Daniel nodded.
"Correct. But I want to understand why Vanessa is insisting that you attend.""
He opened his briefcase.
Inside was a copy of the facility's intake paperwork.
There was a section labeled:
*FAMILY-REQUESTED EMERGENCY OBSERVATION.*
I read the next paragraph.
It described circumstances under which a person might be referred for an urgent evaluation.
But there was no valid order authorizing compulsory detention.
"She wants to make it look like I'm unstable," I said.
"That's my concern.""
Daniel pointed to a line near the bottom.
"Look at the contact person.""
It listed Vanessa.
Beside her name was a telephone number.
But the address was not our home.
It was a small apartment building on the other side of town.
I frowned.
"What's that address?""
Evelyn leaned closer.
"I know that building.""
I looked at her.
"How?""
"Rachel used to visit a woman there.""
My heart skipped.
"Who?""
"Her former financial adviser. A man named Thomas Reed.""
I stared at the paperwork.
"Why would Vanessa use his address?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Daniel made a note.
"We should investigate the connection through proper channels.""
At 1:35 p.m., my phone rang again.
Vanessa.
This time I answered with Daniel beside me.
"Marcus, where are you?""
"Why?""
"You're supposed to be at the clinic.""
"I'm not attending.""
Her voice sharpened.
"You need help.""
"Then why did you submit a false referral?""
"I didn't submit anything false.""
"Did you forge my signature?""
She sighed dramatically.
"Marcus, this is exactly what I'm talking about. You're paranoid.""
"Stop lying.""
There was a pause.
Then her voice softened.
"Listen to me. I know you're upset about Jordan. But this is bigger than you understand.""
"What does that mean?""
"You've been making mistakes for months.""
"What mistakes?""
"You've ignored warning signs. You let Jordan become completely dependent on you. You refuse to accept that he needs professional intervention.""
I clenched my jaw.
"He's fourteen. He needs his father.""
"He's not going to be with you much longer.""
My blood ran cold.
"What did you just say?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Then she whispered:
"Two o'clock, Marcus. If you don't come willingly, things will become much more difficult.""
The call ended.
Daniel immediately contacted the attorney handling the protective filings.
Evelyn looked at me.
"Don't go anywhere alone.""
"I wasn't planning to.""
At 1:52 p.m., another message arrived.
This time, it was a photograph of the front entrance to my office.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
The caption read:
*WE'RE WAITING.*
Daniel called the police and reported the threatening communications.
He also arranged for the relevant information to be added to the evidence file.
I remained at Evelyn's house.
At 2:06 p.m., the black SUV disappeared.
I thought the immediate threat had passed.
Then, at 2:19, my office manager called.
"Marcus, there are two men here asking questions about you.""
"Who?""
"They say they're from a transport service.""
My stomach dropped.
"What kind of transport service?""
"They have a medical referral document. They say your wife requested assistance.""
I looked at Daniel.
He immediately stood.
"Tell them to wait outside. Don't let them enter the building.""
I called the police again.
The officers arrived within minutes.
The two men were no longer there.
But the receptionist had taken a photograph of their vehicle.
It was the same black SUV.
Daniel studied the image.
"Do you recognize the registration?""
"No.""
He made a call.
After a few minutes, he returned.
"The vehicle is registered to a company connected to Raymond Cole.""
I felt a wave of anger.
"He's the man Denise told us about.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
Then Evelyn's phone rang.
She answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice spoke rapidly.
"Mrs. Williams, it's Denise. You have to listen to me.""
Evelyn put the call on speaker.
"What happened?""
"Patricia found out I sent you the documents.""
"Are you safe?""
"I left the office. I'm at a friend's house.""
"What did you find?""
Denise took a breath.
"Vanessa has changed the Friday arrangements.""
My chest tightened.
"Changed them how?""
"She's no longer planning to collect Jordan from your house.""
"Where, then?""
"At school.""
I stood.
"What?""
Denise continued.
"She has submitted an updated authorization claiming that Marcus agreed to a temporary transfer directly from Jordan's school. She plans to arrive with Raymond and the paperwork.""
Daniel immediately began writing.
"Does the school know?""
"Not yet, I think.""
I grabbed my phone and called Mrs. Bennett.
She answered on the second ring.
"Mr. Williams?""
"Has anyone contacted the school about Jordan's release tomorrow?""
A pause.
"Actually, yes. We received an email this afternoon from your wife.""
My heart pounded.
"What did it say?""
"She claims you have authorized her to arrange a temporary placement assessment. She also requested that Jordan be released to a transport representative at nine tomorrow morning.""
I closed my eyes.
"Do not release my son to anyone except me or another person whose authority you have independently verified.""
"I understand.""
"Please forward the email to Daniel Brooks immediately.""
"Of course.""
I ended the call.
Daniel was already speaking to Laura.
He explained the updated plan and requested urgent intervention.
But Denise wasn't finished.
"There is something else," she said.
"What?""
"Patricia has a second set of documents.""
"What documents?""
"An authorization transferring temporary control of Jordan's inheritance to Vanessa if Marcus is declared unable to make financial decisions.""
Evelyn looked at me.
"That's what we've been trying to stop.""
Denise's voice trembled.
"No. You don't understand. The authorization is not the worst part.""
I leaned toward the phone.
"Then what is?""
She hesitated.
"Vanessa has been telling Patricia that Jordan knows something about the inheritance.""
"What could he possibly know?""
"Apparently, Rachel left him a separate letter. Vanessa believes it contains information about the original trust arrangement.""
I stared at Evelyn.
My mother slowly shook her head.
"Rachel did leave a sealed letter," she whispered.
I turned toward her.
"What?""
"She gave it to me before she died. She asked me to keep it until Jordan turned eighteen.""
"Where is it?""
"In my safe.""
Denise continued.
"Vanessa believes that letter could expose a financial arrangement she has been trying to hide. She told Patricia that if Jordan gets hold of it, the entire plan could collapse.""
My throat tightened.
"What's in the letter?""
Evelyn looked at me.
"I haven't opened it. Rachel made me promise.""
"Then why does Vanessa know about it?""
"Because she must have discovered something in Rachel's old files.""
Denise interrupted.
"There's another message. Vanessa sent it to Patricia twenty minutes ago.""
She read it aloud.
"The boy must not speak to Evelyn before the transfer. If she gives him Rachel's letter, everything is over.""
I looked at my mother.
She had gone pale.
"What does Rachel's letter say?"" I asked.
Evelyn slowly stood.
"I don't know, Marcus.""
She walked toward the hallway.
Then she stopped.
"But I think Rachel knew Vanessa long before you ever married her.""
My blood ran cold.
"That's impossible.""
Evelyn turned toward me.
"There's something Rachel told me shortly before she died. I never understood why she made me promise not to tell you until Jordan was old enough.""
"What did she say?""
My mother swallowed.
"She said that if anything ever happened to her, I should never allow a woman named Vanessa Carter to become responsible for Jordan's inheritance.""
The room fell silent.
I stared at her.
"Mom...""
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"Marcus, your wife didn't accidentally discover your son's inheritance after marrying you.""
She looked toward the locked cabinet in her bedroom.
"Rachel warned me about her.""
May you like
Then she whispered the words that made my entire world collapse.
"Your mother wasn't Vanessa's first victim. Your late wife may have been investigating her before she died.""
