Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Everything About Vanessa

At 6:40 the following morning, Evelyn received a call from an unfamiliar number.

She answered while making coffee.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke quietly.

"Mrs. Williams, my name is Denise Parker. I used to work with Patricia Hale.""

Evelyn immediately put the call on speaker.

"What do you want?""

"I need to speak with Marcus.""

I stepped closer.

"I'm Marcus.""

There was a long pause.

"Your wife has been lying to you.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Who are you?""

"Someone who helped prepare the documents Vanessa is using against you.""

My stomach tightened.

"What documents?""

"The placement referral. The psychiatric assessment request. Some of the financial authorization paperwork.""

I gripped the edge of the counter.

"You're telling me you helped her?""

"Yes. And I regret it.""

Evelyn's voice was sharp.

"Why should we believe you?""

"Because I have copies of the original files, including messages that Vanessa thought had been deleted.""

I leaned toward the phone.

"Why are you contacting us now?""

"Because I found out what she's planning for Friday.""

The room went silent.

"What happens Friday?"" I asked.

Denise took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa isn't planning to simply place Jordan in a residential facility. She wants to use the placement to create a legal situation where she becomes his temporary decision-maker.""

"She has no authority to do that.""

"She knows. That's why she's been preparing the allegations against you.""

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"Who is Patricia Hale?""

"Patricia runs a company that connects families with private placement services. At least, that's what she tells people. But she's also been helping Vanessa arrange documents and referrals.""

"Why?""

"Money.""

I looked at the bank statements.

"How much?""

"Vanessa promised Patricia a percentage of the funds she expected to gain access to.""

My throat tightened.

"From Jordan's inheritance?""

"Yes.""

Denise continued.

"Patricia believed the inheritance was worth more than half a million dollars. Vanessa told her she could eventually become the person responsible for managing it.""

Evelyn looked furious.

"Did Patricia know the money belonged to a child?""

"Of course. That was the whole point.""

I felt sick.

"How did Vanessa know about the inheritance?""

Denise hesitated.

"Rachel.""

My head snapped up.

"What?""

"Vanessa had access to some old financial correspondence that belonged to your late wife. She found information about the trust before you married.""

I stared at the phone.

"Are you saying she knew about Jordan's $680,000 before she even met me?""

"Yes.""

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything except the refrigerator humming behind me.

I thought about our first date.

The restaurant.

The conversations.

The way Vanessa had told me she admired how devoted I was to Jordan.

Had any of it been real?

"Why did she marry me?"" I asked.

Denise answered quietly.

"Because she believed marrying you would eventually give her access to the inheritance.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

I gripped the counter harder.

"Send us everything you have.""

"I will. But I need protection.""

"From whom?""

"Patricia knows I've been asking questions. Yesterday, she told me to stop communicating with former employees. She also said Vanessa had already paid for a backup arrangement.""

"What backup arrangement?""

"I don't know the details.""

"Denise, you need to tell us everything.""

She lowered her voice.

"There's a man named Raymond Cole. He handles transportation for some of Patricia's placements.""

Evelyn's expression changed.

"Transportation?""

"He's the person who was supposed to collect Jordan on Friday.""

My stomach dropped.

"Collect him from where?""

"Your house.""

I looked at the clock.

Thursday morning.

Less than twenty-four hours remained.

"Did Vanessa arrange this directly?""

"Yes.""

"Does Raymond know Jordan is being taken without his father's consent?""

Denise hesitated.

"I don't think he cares.""

The call ended after she promised to send the documents through Daniel's secure email system.

I immediately contacted the attorney.

Daniel instructed us not to confront Vanessa or attempt to investigate Raymond ourselves.

He also recommended that Jordan remain somewhere safe, with clear documentation of who was caring for him.

Evelyn packed a small overnight bag for Jordan.

When I explained that he might need to stay with Grandma for another night, he nodded.

"That's okay, Dad.""

Then he looked at me.

"Are you coming back?""

"Absolutely.""

He gave me a small hug.

I watched Evelyn take him into the guest bedroom.

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I almost let it go to voicemail.

But Daniel had advised me to preserve any communication that might reveal her intentions.

I answered.

"Hello.""

"Where are you?""

"Working.""

"Don't lie to me, Marcus.""

I said nothing.

She continued.

"Your mother has been filling your head with nonsense.""

"What do you want, Vanessa?""

"I want my husband back.""

I nearly laughed.

"My husband?""

"You know what I mean.""

"No, I don't.""

Her voice became sharper.

"Jordan cannot stay at Evelyn's forever. He needs structure. He needs consequences.""

"He needs a bedroom and dinner.""

"Oh, here we go again.""

"Why did you contact a residential placement company?""

She went quiet.

Then she said, "Because somebody has to think about what's best for him.""

"Did you forge my signature?""

"Careful, Marcus.""

"Did you?""

"You're clearly not thinking straight.""

I looked at Evelyn, who had returned to the living room.

She silently motioned for me to keep the conversation going.

Vanessa continued.

"Do you know what people are saying about you?""

"What people?""

"Your coworkers. Your neighbors. Your family. Everyone can see you've become obsessed with Rachel's death and Jordan's problems.""

My jaw tightened.

"Stop bringing Rachel into this.""

"Why? She isn't here to defend herself.""

I closed my eyes.

Then Vanessa said something unexpected.

"Come home tonight. We can sign the documents properly and put this behind us.""

"What documents?""

"The temporary guardianship agreement.""

I felt my pulse accelerate.

"You want me to sign away my son's guardianship?""

"Not permanently.""

"Then why does the document say you become his primary financial representative?""

Silence.

Then she whispered, "Because someone has to manage the inheritance responsibly.""

I ended the call.

Evelyn stared at me.

"She admitted it.""

"Yes.""

"Did you record the conversation?""

I looked at my phone.

The call had been recorded through the attorney's approved evidence-preservation procedure.

Evelyn exhaled.

"Good.""

At 11:20 a.m., Denise sent the files.

Daniel reviewed them immediately.

There were dozens of messages between Vanessa and Patricia.

Some were ordinary scheduling conversations.

Others were unmistakably incriminating.

One message from Vanessa read:

"He still thinks I'm trying to discipline the boy. He has no idea I already have the financial documents prepared.""

Another said:

"Once Jordan is placed, Marcus will panic. He'll agree to anything if he believes that's the only way to get his son back.""

Patricia replied:

"And if he refuses?""

Vanessa's answer was chilling.

"Then we use the assessment appointment. He won't be in a position to challenge anything.""

But it was the next message that made Daniel call us.

"Marcus, you need to see this.""

He sent a screenshot.

The conversation was between Vanessa and Raymond Cole.

Vanessa had written:

"Friday at nine. Bring the transport vehicle. The boy must be ready.""

Raymond replied:

"What if the father is home?""

Vanessa answered:

"He won't be able to interfere.""

Then Raymond asked:

"And the grandmother?""

Vanessa replied:

"She'll be dealing with something else.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"What does that mean?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Daniel called again.

"I've found another document. It appears Vanessa has arranged for a welfare complaint to be filed against Evelyn.""

My mother froze.

"Against me?""

"Yes. The allegation claims you have been interfering with the child's treatment plan and attempting to remove him from an approved placement.""

Evelyn slowly sat down.

"That's absurd.""

"Agreed. But it appears designed to create a separate distraction.""

I looked at the clock.

Thursday afternoon.

The psychiatric appointment was scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Friday's transfer was scheduled for 9:00 a.m.

And Vanessa had apparently arranged to have my mother investigated at the same time.

I called Daniel.

"We need to stop everything before tomorrow.""

"We're working on it.""

Then he added:

"Marcus, there's one more message. It was sent from Vanessa's account to Patricia this morning.""

I opened the screenshot.

"If the father discovers the real purpose of Friday, the alternative must be activated. He cannot be allowed to reach the child before the transfer.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She was already reading over my shoulder.

"What alternative?"" she whispered.

A second message arrived.

This one contained an address.

A private medical facility.

May you like

And beneath it, Vanessa had written:

*MAKE SURE MARCUS ARRIVES ALONE.*
