Chapter 8: The Arrest Nobody Expected
The first police officer entered the house at 11:26 p.m.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, and accompanied by a younger officer carrying a tablet. Two more officers remained near the front entrance.
My father stood in the center of the sitting room with Daniel beside him. Denise sat on the sofa, clutching a tissue. Peter had disappeared into the darkness beyond the rear corridor.
I couldn't understand how quickly everything had changed.
Only hours earlier, I had been accused of stealing a bracelet.
Now the police were here because someone had reported that my father was holding his wife against her will.
“Mr. Carter?”” the senior officer asked.
“Yes.””
“My name is Detective Harris. We received a report of a domestic incident at this address. Mrs. Carter alleges that you threatened her and prevented her from leaving.””
My father looked at Denise.
“You told them that?””
She wiped her eyes.
“I was frightened.””
“You brought a suspected fraudster into my house!””
Detective Harris raised a hand.
“Sir, I need you to let me conduct this conversation.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Detective, before you proceed, I should inform you that we've uncovered evidence of a potentially fraudulent property transfer involving Mr. Carter's residence. We also have recordings that may be relevant to the events leading up to this report.””
“Have you preserved the recordings?””
“Yes.””
“Where are they?””
“Copies are secured. The originals remain on the estate's security system.””
Detective Harris nodded to the younger officer.
“Make a note of that. We'll need to establish the appropriate process for obtaining them.””
Denise stood.
“I don't want to press charges. I just want to leave.””
My father stared at her.
“Then leave.””
She hesitated.
Detective Harris looked at her.
“Mrs. Carter, did you tell our dispatcher that your husband had physically threatened you?””
“I said he was frightening me.””
“Did he strike you?””
“No.””
“Did he prevent you from leaving?””
She glanced toward my father.
“He told me to stay until we had discussed the situation.””
“Did he lock you in a room?””
“No.””
The detective made another note.
“Then I need to understand why the report described an assault.””
Denise looked toward the window.
“I was upset. Perhaps I wasn't clear.””
I almost laughed.
Even now, she was trying to reshape the truth into something more convenient.
Then Detective Harris turned to me.
“Miss Carter, we also received a separate allegation involving stolen jewelry. Mrs. Carter reported that a diamond bracelet valued at approximately forty thousand dollars was found in your handbag.””
My stomach tightened.
“I didn't steal it.””
“Do you have any evidence supporting your account?””
“Yes. The security footage shows Denise placing the bracelet in my bag.””
Detective Harris exchanged a glance with his colleague.
“Can we view that footage?””
Daniel nodded.
“Certainly.””
James led them to the study.
I followed with my father, leaving Denise under the younger officer's supervision.
The footage played exactly as it had earlier.
Denise entered the sitting room.
She checked the hallway.
She opened my handbag.
She placed the bracelet inside.
Then she smiled.
Detective Harris watched the clip twice.
“Who has access to this system?””
“Several authorized household staff members,” James replied.
“However, the footage includes timestamps and the original system retains its audit history.””
“Has anyone altered the recording?””
“Not to my knowledge.””
The detective looked at Denise, who had entered the study behind us.
“Mrs. Carter, can you explain why you're placing the bracelet in your stepdaughter's bag?””
Denise folded her arms.
“I was going to return it.””
“Why?””
“Because we had argued.””
“You placed a valuable item in her handbag because you argued?””
She looked away.
“I was angry.””
Detective Harris paused the recording.
“Were you intending to accuse her of stealing it?””
Denise didn't answer.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes,” she whispered.
My father closed his eyes.
The detective made another note.
“That's a serious admission.””
Denise began crying again.
“I never intended for anyone to be arrested. I wanted her to understand that she couldn't keep disrespecting me.””
I stared at her.
“You were willing to destroy my life over an argument.””
She turned toward me.
“You don't understand what I was dealing with!””
“Then explain it.””
She opened her mouth.
No words came.
Detective Harris looked at his colleague.
“Preserve the recording. We'll need statements from everyone present.””
Then he turned to my father.
“Mr. Carter, we have no basis at this stage to arrest your daughter for theft based on the evidence we've seen. The recording raises serious questions about the allegation.””
Relief swept through me, but it lasted only seconds.
Because the detective continued.
“We also need to discuss the property transfer and the threatening material reportedly found at the residence.””
My father gestured toward the table.
“Daniel has the documents.””
Daniel handed over copies of the filing and the suspicious electronic signature.
Detective Harris studied them.
“Has the transfer been completed?””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“The application appears to be pending, and we've requested that the relevant authority preserve the submission records.””
“Who is Blackthorn Property Holdings?””
“We believe Marcus Vale is connected to it.””
At that moment, the younger officer entered the room.
“Detective, there's someone at the front entrance asking to speak with you.””
“Who?””
“Marcus Vale.””
My father looked stunned.
“He came back?””
The officer nodded.
“He says he has information concerning an attempted fraud.””
Detective Harris glanced at Daniel.
“Bring him in.””
Marcus entered wearing a different expression from the one he had worn earlier. His confidence had disappeared. He looked tired, his collar was crooked, and his hands trembled slightly.
“I want to make a statement,” he said.
Detective Harris gestured toward a chair.
“Then sit down.””
Marcus remained standing.
“Before I do, I need to know whether Peter Lawson is still here.””
My father stiffened.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because he's the person who arranged the transfer.””
The detective's expression sharpened.
“Where is Mr. Lawson now?””
“I don't know.””
“You were working with him?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Yes.””
Denise stared at him in horror.
“You told me he would never come here!””
Marcus ignored her.
Detective Harris took out a notebook.
“Start from the beginning.””
Marcus finally sat.
“Peter approached me six months ago. He said he had a legitimate claim against Carter Industries and needed help recovering documents. He promised that once the dispute was resolved, there would be enough money to compensate everyone involved.””
“Everyone including whom?”” the detective asked.
“Denise.””
My father turned toward his wife.
She stared at Marcus.
“You said you wouldn't mention my name.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You already mentioned mine when you invited me into your husband's house.””
Detective Harris interrupted.
“Mrs. Carter, remain silent while I take this statement.””
Marcus continued.
“Peter believed that Richard's first wife had concealed an original trust agreement. According to him, that document would establish that Peter had been entitled to a share of the company's assets before he was forced out.””
Daniel frowned.
“Peter Lawson signed a settlement relinquishing all claims against Carter Industries.””
“He says he signed under duress.””
“That is not the same as having a valid claim.””
“I know that now.””
Detective Harris leaned forward.
“What did you do?””
“I established Blackthorn Property Holdings. Denise supplied information about the estate and Richard's electronic accounts. I prepared the transfer application.””
“Did you forge Mr. Carter's signature?””
Marcus stared at the floor.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
My father looked at Denise.
“Did you know?””
She began shaking her head.
“I didn't know he would forge it.””
Marcus looked up.
“You gave me access to the account.””
“You said it was for verification!””
“You knew exactly what I was doing.””
Detective Harris raised his hand.
“Enough. We'll take separate statements.””
Marcus rubbed his face.
“There was supposed to be no confrontation tonight. The bracelet was meant to discredit Emily, and Denise was supposed to convince Richard to approve a restructuring of the trust.””
My father looked sick.
“And if I refused?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Peter said there was another way.””
“What way?””
“I don't know the details.””
“Tell me what you do know.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Peter told me that if Richard refused to cooperate, the family would be forced into a legal crisis. He said someone would provide evidence that Richard was mentally unfit to manage his assets.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Fabricated evidence?””
Marcus nodded.
“And once Richard was disqualified, the trust would pass to the interim custodian.””
I felt a cold chill.
“Who is the custodian?””
Marcus looked at me.
“That's what Peter has been trying to find out.””
Detective Harris stood.
“Mr. Vale, you're going to accompany us to the station so we can take a formal statement. We'll also need to investigate your role in the suspected forgery.””
Marcus nodded without protest.
As the officers led him toward the entrance, Denise suddenly shouted after him.
“You promised me I wouldn't get hurt!””
Marcus stopped.
He looked back at her.
“You were never the person Peter was worried about.””
Then he left.
Denise sank onto the sofa.
My father stood motionless, staring at the documents Daniel had spread across the table.
I approached him.
“Dad?””
He looked at me, and for the first time that night, he appeared old.
“I trusted her,” he whispered.
I took his hand.
“I know.””
“I trusted her with everything.””
I didn't know how to comfort him.
Because the truth was that I had trusted her too, once. Not completely, perhaps, but enough to believe that she could eventually become part of our family.
Now I understood how thoroughly she had used that hope against me.
Detective Harris returned from the entrance.
“We've secured the initial evidence, but there's one issue we need to resolve before we leave.””
Daniel straightened.
“What issue?””
“The security system recorded an additional person entering the estate shortly before the lights went out. We haven't identified him yet.””
James looked alarmed.
“That footage should show everyone who entered.””
“It does.””
The detective turned the tablet toward us.
A grainy image showed a man walking through the side entrance carrying a small case.
His face was partially obscured by the brim of his hat.
I recognized the coat.
The same dark coat Peter had worn.
But the timestamp was impossible.
The footage showed the man entering the house three minutes before Peter appeared in the hallway.
My father stared at the screen.
“Then who was the man we spoke to?””
Nobody answered.
Detective Harris enlarged the image.
The man in the recording turned toward the camera.
And for one brief second, his face became visible.
James staggered backward.
“No,” he whispered.
My father looked at him.
“What is it?””
James stared at the screen.
“That man is not Peter Lawson.””
May you like
Then he looked toward the empty doorway.
“Because I watched Peter Lawson die twenty years ago.””
