Chapter 3: The Name on the Transfer

Daniel Whitmore arrived at the Carter estate at 9:38 p.m., carrying a dark leather briefcase and wearing the expression of a man who had been pulled away from something important.

He was in his early sixties, with silver hair, narrow glasses, and a reputation for being almost impossible to intimidate.

My father had trusted him with the Carter family's legal affairs for more than twenty years.

When Daniel entered the study, he shook my father's hand, nodded to James, and glanced at Denise.

“Richard told me there may be an issue involving the family trust.””

“An issue?”” my father repeated.

“Someone may be attempting to transfer my home without my permission.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Has a transfer actually been submitted?””

“We don't know,” my father said.

“But we have a recording of Denise discussing one.””

Daniel set his briefcase on the desk.

“Then let's establish what we're dealing with before anyone makes another accusation.””

Denise seized the opportunity.

“Thank you. Finally, someone sensible.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Mrs. Carter, I haven't said anything in your favor.””

Her smile vanished.

My father gestured toward the computer.

“James has the footage.””

Daniel watched the first recording without speaking.

He watched Denise open my handbag, place the bracelet inside, and leave the room.

Then he watched the hallway conversation.

When the words the residence and the trust emerged from the speakers, he stopped the recording and removed his glasses.

“Richard, when was the last time you reviewed the trust's property provisions?””

“Six months ago.””

“Have you authorized any changes to the ownership of this residence?””

“No.””

“Have you signed any electronic documents relating to it?””

My father frowned.

“I signed several routine financial documents last month. Nothing concerning the house.””

Daniel opened his briefcase.

“Then I need to check something immediately.””

He placed a laptop on the desk, connected to a secure portal, and began entering information. The room remained silent except for the soft tapping of his fingers.

Denise moved toward the door.

Daniel didn't look up.

“Mrs. Carter, I'd strongly advise you to remain here.””

She stopped.

“Are you ordering me to stay in my own home?””

“No. I'm advising you not to leave while we investigate a potentially unauthorized property transaction involving your husband.””

She looked at my father.

“Richard, are you going to let him threaten me?””

My father folded his arms.

“Sit down, Denise.””

Her mouth tightened.

She sat.

Several minutes passed before Daniel leaned back in his chair.

“I found a filing.””

My father's face went rigid.

“What kind of filing?””

“An application to transfer the Carter residence into a private holding company.””

“Whose company?””

Daniel turned the laptop so my father could see.

“Blackthorn Property Holdings LLC.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Denise reacted as though someone had struck her.

Her hand flew to her throat.

Daniel noticed.

“Have you heard of this company?””

“No,” she answered too quickly.

Daniel studied her for a moment.

“It's registered under a different state jurisdiction. The filing lists a representative named Marcus Vale.””

At the sound of that name, Denise's fingers tightened around the armrest.

My father saw it.

“Who is Marcus Vale?””

“I have no idea.””

“Then why do you look as though you've just seen a ghost?””

“Because you're all interrogating me over a recording taken out of context!””

Daniel closed the laptop halfway.

“Mrs. Carter, the recording is not the only concern. The application includes an electronic signature attributed to Richard.””

My father leaned forward.

“Show me.””

Daniel opened the document and enlarged the signature field.

There it was.

Richard Carter.

The signature looked almost identical to the one my father had used on legal documents for decades.

Almost.

I had seen my father sign birthday cards, school forms, mortgage papers, and countless letters. His capital R always had a slight upward stroke at the end. This signature didn't.

“That's not my signature,” my father said.

Daniel nodded.

“That was my first concern.””

“Can you prove it?””

“We'll need the underlying electronic authentication records and the filing platform's audit trail. But the signature was submitted using a digital certificate associated with an account that should not have been authorized to execute a property transfer.””

“Which account?””

Daniel hesitated.

“An account linked to the Carter family trust's administrative records.””

My father slowly turned toward Denise.

She shook her head.

“Don't look at me like that.””

“I haven't said anything.””

“You don't have to!””

Her voice rose, and the old performance began to unravel.

“I have spent eight years holding this family together. I have organized your events, managed the house, dealt with your relatives, and made sure everyone thinks you're some kind of saint. And now, because Emily cries in front of you, I'm suddenly a criminal?””

I stared at her.

“You planted stolen jewelry in my bag.””

“I told you why I did that!””

“You said it was a lesson.””

“It was!””

Daniel interrupted.

“Mrs. Carter, the transfer application is dated eleven days ago. The bracelet incident occurred today. Whatever explanation you have for the bracelet, it cannot explain this document.””

Denise fell silent.

My father stood and walked to the window.

Outside, the garden lights illuminated the gravel driveway. Beyond them, the trees swayed in the cold night air.

“This house belonged to my parents,” he said quietly.

“My mother chose every stone in the front entrance. My father planted those trees before I was born. Your wedding reception was held here, Denise. Emily grew up here.””

He turned around.

“And you tried to transfer it without my permission?””

She stared at the floor.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She looked up.

For one brief moment, something resembling desperation crossed her face.

“You don't understand how complicated this has become.””

“Then help me understand.””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, James spoke from beside the computer.

“Sir, I have located the third recording.””

Everyone turned.

James had spent the previous several minutes examining the system's archive. He now stood with one hand resting on the desk, his expression grave.

“The footage from 4:06 p.m. includes a conversation between Mrs. Carter and the same unidentified man.””

Daniel straightened.

“Can you identify him?””

“Not yet. The camera captures Mrs. Carter clearly, but the man remains outside its field of view. His voice is audible.””

“Play it,” my father said.

James pressed a key.

The screen showed Denise entering the sitting room for the second time that afternoon.

She closed the door, pulled out her phone, and sat in the chair beside my handbag.

This time, she did not look nervous.

She looked impatient.

“It's taken care of,” she said.

The man replied, “You said the girl would be arrested.””

“Not necessarily arrested. Accused. There's a difference.””

“And if Richard believes her?””

“He won't. Not after tonight.””

I felt my fingers go numb.

On the recording, Denise leaned forward.

“Once everyone believes Emily stole the bracelet, Richard will have to deal with the embarrassment. I'll convince him that the trust needs to be reorganized before the scandal spreads.””

The man's voice lowered.

“And the house?””

“The paperwork is already moving.””

“What about the digital signature?””

“I told you. Richard signs everything electronically. The authorization was easy to replicate.””

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

“I'm contacting the filing authority and our fraud counsel. We need to preserve the audit trail before anything else changes.””

My father remained motionless.

On the screen, Denise stood and began pacing.

“If the transfer goes through, the residence will be out of his personal control. The trust's other assets will follow once we establish the holding company.””

“And if he refuses?””

Denise stopped walking.

Her expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something colder than anger in her face.

“Then we use the other plan.””

“What other plan?””

“The one you promised would work.””

The man said something too quietly for the microphone to capture.

Denise moved closer to the camera's range.

“Listen to me carefully. If Richard starts asking questions, Emily becomes the distraction. Everyone will be watching the thief while we finish what we started.””

The man answered, “And if that doesn't work?””

Denise looked toward the door.

Then she spoke three words that seemed to suck all the warmth out of the room.

“If he refuses…”

The audio crackled.

The screen flickered.

And the recording ended.

James immediately checked the file.

“That's all of it,” he said.

“The recording stops at that exact point. I've checked the archived copy as well.””

My father stared at the blank screen.

“Refuses what?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel was already making calls, asking his office to verify the filing and preserve the available records. James copied the footage to a separate device.

Denise sat completely still.

Then my father turned toward her.

“What did you mean by the other plan?””

She shook her head.

“I was angry. I was saying things I didn't mean.””

“You discussed falsifying my signature.””

“I never said that!””

“We all heard you.””

“You heard fragments of a conversation!””

Daniel ended his call.

“Mrs. Carter, I would advise you not to make any further statements about the transfer until you have obtained independent legal advice.””

Her eyes flashed.

“Are you suggesting I need a lawyer?””

“I'm suggesting that this situation is serious.””

She looked at my father, expecting him to intervene.

He didn't.

For the first time since she had entered our lives, Denise was entirely alone.

I should have felt victorious.

Instead, I felt afraid.

Because I couldn't stop thinking about the unfinished sentence.

If he refuses…

Refuses what?

And what was the other plan?

James shut down the computer and placed the flash drive in Daniel's hand.

“I've preserved the original recordings and made a separate copy for the security archive,” he said.

“Nothing has been deleted.””

Daniel nodded.

“Good. We'll need to document the chain of custody.””

My father rubbed his face.

“James, I want the exterior doors secured tonight. No one enters or leaves without informing me.””

“Of course, sir.””

Denise rose sharply.

“You cannot imprison me in my own home!””

“Nobody is imprisoning you,” my father replied.

“But until we know what's happening, I'm not going to pretend everything is normal.””

She grabbed her handbag.

“I'm going upstairs.””

Daniel stood aside, allowing her to pass.

As Denise reached the door, she stopped beside me.

“You think you've won something,” she whispered.

I looked directly at her.

“I think I finally know who you are.””

Her lips curved into a small, bitter smile.

“No, Emily. You know what I wanted you to see.””

Then she walked out.

The door closed behind her.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally, Daniel placed a hand on my father's shoulder.

“Richard, I need you to remain calm. We'll deal with the property filing, and we'll determine who is behind Blackthorn Property Holdings. But until we establish the facts, assume that whoever submitted this application may still have access to information they shouldn't possess.””

My father nodded.

“What does that mean for Emily?””

Daniel glanced at me.

“It means she should not be left alone with anyone she doesn't trust.””

The words settled over me like ice.

James accompanied Daniel to the front entrance a little later. My father stayed in his study, staring at the property documents.

I went upstairs to my bedroom.

I locked the door.

Then I checked the window.

Then I checked the door again.

I felt ridiculous doing it, but I couldn't shake the thought that someone had spent the entire day arranging to make me look like a criminal while quietly preparing to take our home.

At 10:47 p.m., I heard footsteps in the hallway.

I held my breath.

They stopped outside my bedroom.

A soft knock followed.

“Emily?””

It was James.

I opened the door.

He stood holding a small cream-colored envelope.

“I'm sorry to disturb you,” he said.

“This was left near the front entrance after Mr. Whitmore arrived.””

“Who left it?””

“We don't know. The security camera covering the entrance went offline for approximately forty seconds.””

My stomach tightened.

“Did you open it?””

“No. It was addressed to you.””

He handed it over.

My name was written across the front in black ink.

Beneath it, someone had written three words.

*SHE ISN'T THE ONLY ONE.*

I stared at the envelope.

James's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Miss Carter, there's something else you need to know.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He glanced toward the staircase, making sure nobody was listening.

“Before the cameras went offline, I saw someone standing outside the gate.””

“Who?””

“I couldn't see his face. But he was holding a photograph of your father.””

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

James swallowed.

“And when he noticed the camera, he held the photograph up to the lens.””

“What was on the back?””

James hesitated.

“Three more words.””

I could barely breathe.

“What did they say?””

May you like

James looked directly into my eyes.

“*Bring her to us.*”
