Chapter 2: The Woman on Camera
My father's private study smelled of cedarwood, old books, and the coffee James had brought in before dinner.
I had spent much of my childhood in that room, sitting cross-legged on the rug while my father read financial reports or helped me with school assignments. It had always felt like the safest place in the house.
That night, it felt like a courtroom.
My father sat behind his desk. I occupied the leather chair beside the window, my hands clasped so tightly that my knuckles had turned white.
Denise stood near the fireplace, refusing to sit.
James connected the flash drive to the computer.
“Before we begin,” my father said, “I want everyone to understand something. We are watching this footage to establish the truth. No interruptions.””
Denise gave a brittle laugh.
“That's rather dramatic.””
“Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about,” I replied.
She turned toward me.
“Watch your tone, Emily.””
“Why? Are you worried about what the camera might show?””
“Enough,” my father said.
James dimmed the desk lamp and opened the security application.
The first clip showed the sitting room at 2:17 p.m.
Sunlight spilled across the carpet. My handbag sat on the chair beside the window, exactly where I had left it that afternoon.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then Denise entered.
She glanced toward the hallway.
She looked toward the staircase.
Then she closed the sitting room door.
My father leaned forward.
“Why did you close the door?”” he asked.
Denise crossed her arms.
“I wanted privacy.””
James said nothing.
On the screen, Denise walked directly to the chair holding my handbag.
She picked it up.
My heart began pounding.
“That's my bag,” I whispered.
“I can see that,” my father replied.
Denise unfastened the clasp and opened the main compartment. She looked inside for several seconds, then reached into the pocket of her dress.
When her hand emerged, she was holding the diamond bracelet.
A cold sensation spread through my chest.
“No,” my aunt's voice seemed to echo in my memory, although she wasn't there.
“It was found in her bag.””
On the screen, Denise carefully lowered the bracelet into the handbag.
She pushed it beneath my wallet.
Then she rearranged the contents, closed the clasp, and returned the bag to the chair.
She stood back to inspect it.
And smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
Not a guilty smile.
A satisfied one.
My father stopped breathing for a moment.
“Turn it off,” he said.
James paused the video.
“No,” I said.
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
“Emily,” my father began.
“I want to see the rest.””
James pressed play.
Denise checked her watch, walked to the door, and opened it. Before leaving, she looked back at the handbag one final time.
Then she disappeared into the hallway.
The timestamp changed.
2:23 p.m.
Six minutes after entering, she had left.
I stared at the frozen image until the screen blurred.
She had looked me in the eyes less than six hours later and demanded that I explain how the bracelet had gotten into my bag.
She had watched me shake.
She had listened while my own relatives questioned my character.
She had threatened to involve the police.
And she had known the entire time that I was innocent.
“Denise,” my father said quietly.
She didn't answer.
“Explain this.””
She drew herself up.
“I can explain it.””
“Then do so.””
“I was going to return the bracelet.””
I looked at her.
“You planted it in my handbag.””
“I was trying to teach you a lesson.””
My father slowly rose.
“A lesson?””
“You have no idea what it's like living with her, Richard. She treats this house like it's hers. She expects everything to be handed to her.””
“I'm your husband's daughter!””
“And I am your father's wife!””
Her shout seemed to strike the walls.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Denise pressed her fingers against her temples, as if she were the injured party struggling to remain composed.
“I never intended for things to go this far,” she said.
I stood up.
“You called me a thief in front of the entire family.””
“I didn't know what everyone would do.””
“You knew exactly what you were doing.””
She looked at my father.
“Richard, you know how emotional I get when I feel disrespected.””
He stared at her as if he had never seen her before.
“Did you put the bracelet in Emily's bag to make us believe she had stolen it?””
Denise's lips parted.
No answer came.
“Denise.””
“Yes,” she whispered.
The admission was so small that I almost missed it.
My father gripped the edge of his desk.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“I told you. I wanted her to understand that she can't keep behaving as if she's the only person who matters.””
“That is not an answer.””
“It's the only one you're getting.””
James cleared his throat.
“Mr. Carter, there is another recording.””
Denise's head snapped up.
“No.””
It was the first time she had spoken without pretending to be calm.
James looked at her.
“I'm afraid there is.””
“You've already shown him what you wanted to show him.””
“I haven't shown him anything that wasn't recorded by the security system.””
“Then delete it.””
My father turned toward her slowly.
“What did you say?””
Denise immediately shook her head.
“I didn't mean that. I'm upset.””
James opened another file.
“This recording was captured in the east hallway at 3:41 p.m. It includes audio from the sitting room and the adjacent corridor.””
The video showed Denise standing near the tall windows at the end of the hallway, holding her phone against her ear.
She appeared relaxed now, almost cheerful.
The audio crackled, then cleared.
“It's done,” Denise said.
A man's voice answered through the phone.
“Are you sure?””
“Completely. They'll find it in her bag tonight.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
The man's voice was unfamiliar.
“And Richard?””
“He'll believe his precious daughter before he believes anything I say. That's why I had to make it convincing.””
My father slowly lowered himself into his chair.
On the recording, the man chuckled.
“What about the paperwork?””
“I'm handling it.””
“You said that yesterday.””
“And I told you to be patient.””
Denise paced beside the window.
“The transfer has to be completed before Richard starts asking questions. Once the residence is moved, the trust becomes much easier to control.””
My father shot to his feet.
“Stop the recording.””
James paused it.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the quiet hum of the computer.
Then my father spoke.
“What transfer?””
Denise's face had gone pale.
“Richard, I can explain.””
“What transfer?””
She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
James turned toward my father.
“Sir, I believe we need to contact your attorney immediately.””
My father stared at the paused image of Denise holding her phone.
“Who was she talking to?””
“I don't know yet,” James answered.
“But I saved the complete recording, including the incoming call metadata available to the system.””
Denise stepped toward the computer.
“Give me that drive.””
James moved it out of her reach.
“I'm afraid I can't do that, ma'am.””
“I'm telling you to give it to me!””
“And I'm telling you that the footage belongs to Mr. Carter.””
She turned on my father.
“You're allowing a servant to speak to me like this?””
My father looked at her with an expression I had never witnessed before.
“No, Denise. I'm allowing him to protect my family.””
She went silent.
Then, very slowly, she looked at me.
The hatred in her eyes was no longer disguised by a smile.
“You have no idea what you've done,” she whispered.
I took one step toward her.
“I didn't do anything. You did.””
For the first time, she seemed unable to find a reply.
James closed the video window and picked up his phone.
“I'll contact Mr. Whitmore now.””
“Daniel Whitmore?”” my father asked.
“Yes, sir. Given what we've heard, I believe he should come here tonight.””
Denise suddenly reached for her handbag.
My father noticed.
“Where are you going?””
“I need some air.””
“No one is leaving until we understand what this means.””
She froze.
Then she smiled again, but this time the expression looked painful.
“Richard, you cannot possibly believe that I would steal from you.””
He didn't answer.
She glanced at the computer, then at James.
Finally, her eyes settled on me.
And she said something that made my skin turn cold.
“You should have stayed out of the family business, Emily.””
I had never asked to be involved in the Carter family trust.
I barely understood its structure.
But now I knew Denise had been willing to destroy my reputation to get her hands on something connected to it.
James ended the call with Daniel Whitmore and turned back toward us.
“He's on his way,” he said.
My father nodded.
“Good.””
Then James hesitated.
“There is one more thing, sir.””
My father closed his eyes briefly.
“What now?””
James looked at Denise.
“The system recorded another conversation at 4:06 p.m. It appears Mrs. Carter returned to the sitting room after making that call.””
Denise's face became completely expressionless.
May you like
James continued.
“This time, she wasn't alone.””
