Chapter 7: The Beneficiary Nobody Expected
"Ask your brother Samir who the real beneficiary of your estate was supposed to be.""
Patricia's words hung in the living room.
My father didn't move.
Denise held her phone with both hands, the speaker still turned on. Tiffany stood beside the fireplace, watching Dad with an expression I couldn't understand.
"What beneficiary?"" Dad finally asked.
Patricia sighed.
"Don't pretend you don't understand estate planning, Khalil. You have a daughter from your first marriage, a new wife, and another child on the way. These things have to be handled carefully.""
"Answer my question.""
"Samir knows.""
Dad looked at the phone.
"Then put him on the line.""
"He's not here.""
"Call him.""
Patricia laughed softly.
"You really should stop treating everyone like they're working against you.""
Dad's voice hardened.
"Someone used my signature, emptied my daughter's education account, submitted false information to a school, and attempted to change my property arrangements. I think I've earned the right to ask questions.""
Patricia went silent.
Then she said, "You should have thought about these things before promising Tiffany a future.""
Dad stared at the phone.
"What did I promise her?""
Tiffany suddenly interrupted.
"Mom, stop talking.""
But Patricia continued.
"You told her she and the baby would never have to worry about money. You told her the house would become theirs. You told her Ariana would eventually have her own arrangements.""
Dad's face changed.
"I never promised anyone my daughter would be removed from her home.""
Patricia made a dismissive sound.
"That's not how Tiffany understood it.""
"Then Tiffany misunderstood.""
Tiffany stepped forward.
"Khalil, you did say the house would be ours after the wedding.""
Dad turned.
"I said we would share our lives. I never said Ariana would lose hers.""
Patricia laughed again.
"Well, there's no point arguing about memories. The paperwork speaks for itself.""
David, who had remained near the dining room entrance, stepped forward.
"Mrs. Wells, this is David Morgan, Mr. Hassan's attorney.
Please preserve all communications and documents relating to these arrangements. We will be requesting copies through the appropriate legal channels.""
Patricia's tone changed immediately.
"Are you threatening me?""
"No. I'm informing you that these matters are now being formally investigated.""
The call ended.
Denise lowered her phone.
For a moment, the only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the fireplace.
Dad turned toward me.
"Go upstairs with Denise for a few minutes.""
I shook my head.
"I want to know what's happening.""
He crouched slightly so we were eye level.
"I know. But I need to make a few calls, and I don't want you hearing anything that might frighten you.""
I looked at Tiffany.
"She's already frightened me.""
Dad's expression softened.
"You're right.""
He stood.
"Then stay beside me.""
David opened his laptop and began making calls.
Dad dialed Samir.
This time, his brother answered immediately.
"Khalil, I know you're angry.""
"Who was supposed to inherit my estate?""
Samir exhaled.
"Where did you hear that?""
"Patricia.""
A long silence followed.
Then Samir said, "We need to talk privately.""
"We're talking now.""
"Not with Tiffany there.""
Dad looked directly at her.
"She's the reason I'm asking.""
Samir lowered his voice.
"Brother, the original plan was to create a family trust. You would retain control during your lifetime, and the assets would be distributed according to the agreement after your death.""
"I never approved that agreement.""
"You discussed the possibility.""
"I discussed protecting Ariana.""
Samir sighed.
"Tiffany wanted the baby protected too.""
"And who was listed as beneficiary?""
Another silence.
Finally, Samir answered.
"The unborn child.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"And Ariana?""
"She would receive her education fund.""
Dad looked toward the tablet.
"The education fund she already took money from?""
"I didn't know she had withdrawn anything.""
"Who was going to control the trust?""
Samir hesitated.
"Your estate administrator.""
"Who?""
"Me.""
Dad's hand tightened around the phone.
"You were going to control my estate?""
"Only if something happened to you.""
"And Tiffany would have control over the baby’s inheritance?""
Samir didn't answer.
David looked up from his laptop.
"Mr. Hassan, ask him whether the proposed agreement contains a provision concerning the current residence.""
Dad repeated the question.
Samir sighed.
"Yes. It proposed transferring the property into the trust.""
"And who would live there?""
"Tiffany and the baby.""
Dad stared at the floor.
"And Ariana?""
"She would have been provided for separately.""
Dad ended the call without saying goodbye.
Tiffany began crying.
"Khalil, please. You have to understand. I was scared.""
He looked at her.
"Scared of what?""
"Of being left with nothing.""
"You had a home, a wedding, and a family.""
"I had a family that never accepted me!""
I stepped forward.
"Nobody stopped you from being part of ours.""
Tiffany looked at me.
"You never wanted me here.""
I shook my head.
"I wanted someone who wouldn't throw away my mother's photograph.""
Her face twisted.
Dad raised one hand.
"Enough.""
David closed his laptop.
"I've spoken with the financial institution. They've placed a temporary review on the account because of the disputed transaction. No further withdrawals will be processed until ownership and authorization are verified.""
Dad nodded.
"And the school?""
"They've agreed to suspend the enrollment process pending confirmation from the legal guardian.""
I felt my shoulders relax slightly.
For the first time that afternoon, it seemed possible that I wouldn't be forced to leave.
Then David received an email.
He opened it, read the first paragraph, and frowned.
"What is it?"" Dad asked.
"The school has sent us a copy of the original application.""
"Didn't we already see it?""
"Not the complete application.""
He turned the laptop around.
There were additional pages.
One contained a section titled Reason for Placement.
Dad began reading.
His expression became increasingly disturbed.
The document claimed I had repeatedly threatened Tiffany, damaged property, and refused to attend school.
I stared at the screen.
"That's all lies.""
David nodded.
"I understand.""
Then he reached the final page.
There was a statement from an alleged witness.
*I, Denise Parker, confirm that Ariana Hassan has demonstrated severe behavioral problems and that her current home environment is unsuitable.*
Denise covered her mouth.
"I never wrote that.""
Dad looked at her.
"Did you give anyone permission to use your name?""
"No!""
David zoomed in on the signature.
"This appears to have been submitted electronically.""
Denise started crying.
"I told you I received that strange email. I never agreed to anything.""
Tiffany suddenly spoke.
"Maybe you forgot.""
Denise turned toward her.
"Don't you dare.""
"You were the one helping me with the paperwork.""
"I helped you organize wedding invitations!""
Tiffany's eyes narrowed.
"And you knew Ariana was difficult.""
Denise stepped closer.
"I knew you were cruel.""
Tiffany raised her hand as if she might strike her sister.
Dad caught her wrist before she could.
"Don't.""
She pulled away.
Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, she said, "You all think you're so innocent.""
Dad stared at her.
"What else did you do?""
Tiffany looked at me.
Then she looked toward the staircase.
"I didn't do everything alone.""
David stood.
"What does that mean?""
Tiffany swallowed.
"It means there are people who have been helping me. People who know exactly why Ariana needed to leave.""
Dad stepped closer.
"Name them.""
Tiffany didn't answer.
Instead, her phone vibrated again.
A new message appeared.
She glanced at it.
Then her face went completely blank.
Dad noticed.
"Who is that?""
Tiffany slowly turned the screen toward him.
It was a message from Samir.
*Don't tell Khalil about the second agreement. I'll handle it tonight.*
Dad stared at the screen.
Then he looked at Tiffany.
"Second agreement?""
She began shaking her head.
May you like
And Denise whispered the words that made my father reach for his phone again.
"Oh, God. They weren't just planning to take Ariana's room.""
