Chapter 2: The Recording

For three seconds, nobody spoke.

The house was so quiet I could hear the air conditioner humming above the staircase.

Then Tiffany started crying.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

She covered her mouth with both hands and stepped toward my father.

"Khalil, thank God you're home.""

Dad didn't move.

"Tiffany. I asked you a question.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Ariana has been completely out of control.""

I looked at him.

My father was still wearing his travel jacket. His tie was loose, and his suitcase stood beside his leg.

He looked exhausted.

But when he saw the broken photograph near my feet, his expression hardened.

"What happened to that picture?""

Tiffany shook her head.

"She threw it.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"Don't start, Ariana.""

Dad raised one hand.

"Both of you. Stop.""

Tiffany immediately stepped behind him.

"She became aggressive when I asked her to clean her room. I tried talking to her, but she started screaming and threatening me.""

"That's not true," I said.

Tiffany sighed dramatically.

"See? This is what I deal with every day.""

Dad turned toward me.

"Sweetheart, why is your suitcase packed?""

I couldn't answer immediately.

My throat felt tight.

"Because she told me to leave.""

He looked at Tiffany.

"Why?""

"Because I needed to teach her some boundaries.""

"By throwing her out?""

"She needs to understand that this isn't just her house anymore.""

Dad's jaw tightened.

"This is her home.""

Tiffany blinked.

"I know, but—"

"No. You don't get to finish that sentence.""

She looked genuinely shocked.

I had never heard Dad speak to her like that.

He walked toward my suitcase and opened it.

Inside were my clothes, schoolbooks, a pair of sneakers, and the small jewelry box my mother had left me.

He picked up the jewelry box.

"Why is this packed?""

Tiffany crossed her arms.

"Because she's leaving.""

"Who told you she was leaving?""

"I did.""

Dad slowly turned.

"You did?""

"Someone has to make decisions around here, Khalil. You travel constantly. I'm the one dealing with her behavior.""

I looked at my father.

"Can I show you something?""

Tiffany's head snapped toward me.

"No.""

Dad noticed.

"What doesn't she want me to see?""

"Nothing," Tiffany answered quickly.

"She's trying to manipulate you.""

I unlocked my phone.

The recording was still there.

I pressed play.

Tiffany's voice filled the hallway.

"Pack your things, Ariana. You have exactly twenty minutes to get out of this house before your father comes home.""

Dad went completely still.

Then came her next sentence.

"Your father says a lot of things when he feels guilty. That doesn't mean I have to live with the consequences.""

The recording continued.

"Call one of your mother's relatives.""

"Then start walking.""

Dad's face changed with every sentence.

When the recording reached the moment Tiffany told me I didn't belong in the family, he looked at her.

"Did you say that?""

Tiffany shook her head.

"That's taken out of context.""

I pressed the volume button.

The recording continued.

"Your father is marrying me in three weeks. After that, this house will finally become a proper family home.""

Then my own voice.

"And where do I fit in?""

Tiffany's answer came through clearly.

"You don't.""

My father slowly lowered his head.

For the first time, I saw shame on his face.

"Tiffany," he said quietly.

"Explain.""

She took a breath.

"She provoked me.""

"She provoked you into throwing her out?""

"She has been disrespectful since the beginning!""

"She's sixteen!""

"And I'm supposed to spend the rest of my life being treated like a stranger in my own home?""

Dad looked around the hallway.

"This is my daughter's home.""

Tiffany's eyes filled again.

"You promised me things would change after the wedding.""

Dad frowned.

"What does that mean?""

She quickly shook her head.

"Nothing. I'm upset. I didn't mean it.""

I looked at her.

"You told me this happens because Dad isn't here.""

Tiffany turned sharply.

"Be quiet.""

Dad stepped between us.

"What happens when I'm not here?""

I swallowed.

My hands were trembling, but I kept speaking.

"Every time you travel, she does this.""

Tiffany laughed nervously.

"That's ridiculous.""

"Last month, she locked the kitchen and told me I wasn't allowed to eat dinner until I apologized for embarrassing her in front of her friends.""

Dad stared at her.

I continued.

"Two months ago, she took my bedroom key and put my school supplies in the garage. She said I needed to learn what it felt like to have nothing.""

"That's enough," Tiffany snapped.

"And the time you went to Chicago, she told me she was going to send me to Aunt Denise without telling you.""

Dad turned toward her.

"Did you do that?""

Tiffany's lips parted.

Nothing came out.

Then she reached for his arm.

"Khalil, you have to understand. I'm under enormous pressure. Planning this wedding, managing the house, dealing with a teenager who refuses to accept me...""

He pulled his arm away.

"Don't make this about the wedding.""

"But it is about the wedding!""

Her voice cracked.

"I've sacrificed so much for this family!""

Dad looked at the suitcase again.

"You were putting my daughter on the street.""

"Temporarily!""

"She has nowhere to go!""

Tiffany opened her mouth.

Then a voice came from the staircase.

"Actually, Khalil, there's something else you need to know.""

We all turned.

Standing on the landing was Denise, Tiffany's older sister, who had been staying with us for the past two weeks to help with wedding preparations.

She held a tablet against her chest.

Her eyes were red.

Tiffany stared at her.

"Denise. Don't.""

Denise slowly walked downstairs.

"I can't keep doing this.""

Tiffany's face tightened.

"You're my sister.""

"I know.""

"Then stay out of it.""

Denise looked at my father.

"I've been covering for her. Every time you called while you were away, I told you Ariana was fine.""

Dad's expression went cold.

"Why?""

Denise glanced at me.

"Because Tiffany made me promise.""

Then she looked back at him.

"But there's something I haven't told you.""

She unlocked her tablet.

"I found something in her wedding folder.""

Tiffany lunged toward her.

"Give me that!""

May you like

Denise stepped away.

And when she finally showed my father the screen, his face turned completely pale.
