Chapter 4: The Papers Were Already Signed

"Submitted where, Tiffany?""

My father's voice was so controlled that it frightened me more than shouting would have.

Tiffany stood beside the coffee table, holding her phone with both hands. The screen was still displaying the message.

*The transfer documents have already been submitted.*

She glanced at Denise, then back at Dad.

"You're making this sound worse than it is.""

Dad stepped closer.

"Answer the question.""

Tiffany exhaled sharply.

"The application was submitted to the school.""

"What application?""

"The residential enrollment application.""

"For Ariana?""

"Yes.""

I felt my knees weaken.

Dad turned toward me.

"Did you sign anything?""

I shook my head.

"Never.""

He looked at Tiffany again.

"Then who signed it?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation told us more than any explanation could.

Denise picked up the tablet.

"Khalil, there's something else. The application includes a parental authorization form.""

Dad frowned.

"Show me.""

Denise opened the document and scrolled down.

There were several pages of information about the school, medical permissions, emergency contacts, and transportation arrangements.

Then she stopped.

At the bottom of the final page was a signature.

*Khalil Hassan.*

My father's signature.

He stared at it.

"I never signed this.""

Tiffany immediately shook her head.

"You did.""

"When?""

"Last month. Remember? You signed a stack of documents I left in your office.""

Dad looked genuinely stunned.

"What documents?""

"Insurance forms. Wedding paperwork. Household arrangements.""

"You told me those were insurance documents.""

"They were part of the same packet.""

Dad grabbed the tablet.

"You're telling me you slipped my daughter's enrollment authorization into a stack of paperwork and let me sign it without knowing what it was?""

Tiffany crossed her arms.

"I didn't force you to sign anything.""

Dad's face turned red.

"That's not an answer.""

She stepped toward him.

"You were busy, Khalil. You kept telling me to handle everything. I handled it.""

"By forging my consent through deception?""

"I didn't forge anything!""

"Then explain why I don't know what I signed!""

Tiffany looked toward Denise.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""

Denise shook her head.

"No. I'm terrified of what you've done.""

Tiffany laughed bitterly.

"You always hated seeing me happy.""

"Happy?"" Denise asked.

"You were planning to send a sixteen-year-old girl away without telling her father.""

Tiffany's voice dropped.

"She was making my life impossible.""

I stepped forward.

"I never did anything to you.""

She looked at me.

"You think you're innocent?""

Dad immediately moved between us.

"Don't speak to her like that.""

Tiffany threw her hands up.

"See? This is exactly what I mean. You defend her before you even know what happened.""

Dad pointed toward the tablet.

"We're going to find out exactly what happened.""

He pulled out his phone and called his attorney.

The call went to voicemail.

He tried again.

This time someone answered.

"David, it's Khalil. I need you at my house immediately. There's been a serious issue involving documents submitted in my name.""

He paused.

"No, it's not a business matter. It's about my daughter.""

Tiffany paced across the living room.

"You're blowing everything up over a misunderstanding.""

Dad ended the call.

"A misunderstanding doesn't require hiding a child from her father.""

Tiffany sat down hard on the couch.

For a moment, she looked smaller.

Then she remembered something.

"Fine. You want the truth? The school hasn't accepted her yet. Nothing is final.""

Denise looked up from the tablet.

"That's not what the email says.""

Tiffany froze.

Denise opened the email again.

"There's a confirmation number.""

Dad took the tablet.

The document showed an enrollment request marked as approved pending final transportation authorization.

Underneath was a scheduled pickup date.

Three days after the wedding.

My stomach turned.

"They were going to come get me?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

"Would you have let me go?""

His face crumpled.

"No, sweetheart.""

"But you signed it.""

"I didn't know.""

"You signed it.""

He closed his eyes.

"I know.""

I turned away.

I didn't want him to see me crying again.

Upstairs, a door creaked.

We all looked toward the staircase.

The housekeeper, Mrs. Evelyn, stood there holding a laundry basket.

She had worked for my family since before my mother died. She was the closest thing I had to another grandmother.

Her eyes moved from the tablet to my father's face.

"Mr. Khalil?""

Dad looked up.

"Yes, Evelyn?""

She slowly put the basket down.

"I think you should know that this wasn't the first time.""

Tiffany stood immediately.

"Evelyn, don't.""

The older woman swallowed.

"I've kept quiet because I needed this job. But I can't keep watching that child suffer.""

Dad walked toward her.

"What are you talking about?""

Evelyn glanced at me.

"Last time you traveled, Mrs. Tiffany had a man come to the house.""

Tiffany's face went white.

Dad stopped moving.

"What man?""

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"A man carrying documents. He said he was from the school.""

My father looked at Tiffany.

"Who came here?""

She said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

"He asked Ariana to come downstairs. Mrs. Tiffany told him the girl was difficult and that he should wait until after the wedding.""

I stared at her.

"Wait. Someone came here?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

Dad looked furious.

"Why wasn't I told?""

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"Because Mrs. Tiffany told me she'd have me fired if I spoke.""

Tiffany stood up.

"That's enough!""

But Evelyn wasn't finished.

"There's something else, Mr. Khalil.""

Dad turned toward her.

"What?""

She looked at Tiffany.

Then she said the words that made the room go silent.

"The man didn't come alone. He brought another document. And I saw your brother's name on it.""

My father's expression changed.

"My brother?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Mr. Samir was listed as the emergency guardian.""

Dad slowly turned toward Tiffany.

"Why was my brother involved in this?""

Tiffany looked down at her phone.

May you like

For the first time that afternoon, she seemed genuinely frightened.

And I realized there were people outside our house who knew about the plan long before Dad ever came home.
