Chapter 8: The Daughter Nobody Knew About

The woman on the phone refused to give me her location.

She said her name was Olivia Reed.

She was twenty-eight years old and had been living under a different surname for most of her adult life.

When I asked why she had answered Noah's phone, she told me he had left it at her apartment.

“Is he safe?”” I asked.

“For now.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone has been following him.””

My father grabbed the phone.

“Who?””

Olivia went silent.

Then she said, “Daniel.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Where is Noah?””

“I can't tell you.””

“I'm his brother.””

“And I'm the person who has been protecting him.””

I looked at my father.

He seemed to recognize something in her voice.

“Olivia,” he said gently, “I'm Marcus Cole. I knew your mother.””

She laughed bitterly.

“No, Mr. Cole. You knew the woman she pretended to be.””

“What do you want from us?””

“The truth.””

“Then help us find Noah.””

Olivia hesitated.

Finally, she agreed to meet us at a small diner outside Burlington, Vermont.

She gave us an address and instructed us not to tell anyone.

We left the bank immediately.

During the drive, my father barely spoke.

I kept thinking about Noah's last words.

My mother hadn't died because of an illness.

Someone might have helped her die.

When we reached the diner, Olivia was waiting in a booth near the window.

She had dark hair, tired eyes, and a small scar near her left eyebrow.

The moment she saw us, she stood.

“Which one is Ethan?””

I raised my hand.

She studied my face.

“You look like Laura.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

“Did you know her?””

Olivia nodded.

“She was the only person who ever treated me like I mattered.””

My father sat down.

“What happened between you and Vanessa?””

Olivia looked at him.

“Everything.””

She removed a small envelope from her handbag.

Inside were several photographs.

One showed Vanessa holding a little girl.

Another showed Daniel standing outside a house.

The final photograph showed my mother sitting on a park bench with two children.

One was me.

The other was a little boy.

Noah.

Olivia pointed at the boy.

“He was six when I first met him.””

I frowned.

“How did you know him?””

“Because Daniel used to bring me to see him.””

My father looked confused.

“But why?””

Olivia's expression hardened.

“Because Noah was my half-brother.””

I stared at her.

“Wait. You're Vanessa's daughter?””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel is your father?””

She nodded.

The room seemed to spin.

Daniel had fathered two children with Vanessa.

One was Noah.

The other was Olivia.

And both had somehow been caught in the same financial conspiracy.

Olivia continued.

“My mother told me Daniel was a family friend. I didn't discover he was my father until I was nineteen. By then, Noah had already disappeared.””

“Where did Laura fit into all this?”” I asked.

Olivia looked down.

“Laura knew what Daniel was doing. She was trying to protect Noah's inheritance. She also knew he was using Vanessa to gain access to your father's company.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would he need Vanessa?””

“Because she was already close to you.””

My father stiffened.

“She wasn't my wife then.””

“No. But she had been working for Daniel for years.””

I stared at her.

“Working for him?””

Olivia nodded.

“He paid her to collect information about your family's finances. She knew which accounts existed, which properties were being transferred, and which documents your father signed without reading.””

Marcus looked devastated.

I couldn't help thinking about the staged assault.

Vanessa hadn't suddenly become manipulative after marrying my father.

She had been trained to manipulate him long before that.

Olivia placed another document on the table.

It was a financial statement.

Several payments had been made from a company account to a series of offshore entities.

The amounts were enormous.

“Daniel used Noah's trust to finance these transfers,” she explained.

“Then he created fake debt records to make the money appear legitimate.””

My father examined the document.

“That's impossible. These transactions went through my company.””

“Exactly,” Olivia replied.

“Your company was the vehicle.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I never approved these.””

“Daniel used your electronic authorization.””

I looked at the dates.

Some transactions had occurred while my mother was still alive.

Others continued for years after her death.

“Why didn't Laura report him?””

Olivia's eyes filled.

“She did.””

She reached into the envelope and removed a handwritten letter.

It was addressed to a federal investigator.

But the letter had never been mailed.

“She was preparing to expose Daniel,” Olivia said.

“Then she became ill.””

My father leaned forward.

“What illness?””

“That's what nobody could explain.””

Olivia took a breath.

“Laura had been recovering from surgery. Her doctors expected her to improve. But after Daniel visited her in the hospital, her condition suddenly deteriorated.””

My father covered his mouth.

“He visited her?””

“Several times.””

I felt sick.

“Did you see him?””

Olivia nodded.

“I was there once. I heard them arguing.””

“What did they say?””

She closed her eyes.

“Laura told him she had copied everything. She said Noah would receive his inheritance, and the police would get the financial records.””

My father whispered, “And Daniel?””

Olivia looked at him.

“He told her that if she didn't stop, nobody would ever find Noah.””

I looked at the photograph of my mother.

“What happened afterward?””

“She died three days later.””

My father stood and walked outside.

Through the window, I watched him lean against the side of the building.

His shoulders were shaking.

I wanted to follow him, but Olivia touched my arm.

“There's something else you need to know.””

I turned.

“What?””

She removed a small flash drive.

“Laura gave this to me shortly before she died.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn't you give it to the police?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Daniel?””

“Of everyone.””

She pushed it toward me.

“Your mother told me to give it to Noah. She said it contained proof of what Daniel had done.””

I picked it up.

“What proof?””

Olivia looked directly at me.

“A recording.””

My pulse quickened.

“Of what?””

“Daniel talking about Laura's death.””

My father returned to the booth.

He saw the flash drive.

“What is that?””

Olivia explained.

Marcus took it carefully.

“We need to listen to it.””

She nodded.

“But there's a warning.””

“What warning?””

“Laura said the recording would prove Daniel was involved. But she also said it would reveal something about your father.””

Marcus went pale.

“About me?””

Olivia nodded.

“She said you were the reason Daniel had been able to steal everything.””

My father looked at me.

“I never helped him.””

“I believe you,” I said.

But Olivia wasn't finished.

“Laura said you signed something without understanding what it meant. Something that gave Daniel control over the company.””

Marcus sat down.

“What did I sign?””

Olivia opened her handbag again.

She removed a photocopy of a document.

At the top was a heading:

*IRREVOCABLE TRANSFER OF CONTROL AND BENEFICIAL INTEREST.*

My father's signature appeared at the bottom.

The date was nine years earlier.

Three days before my mother's death.

Marcus stared at it.

“I don't remember this.””

Olivia's voice was barely audible.

“Your mother signed the same document.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

“She signed it because Daniel told her it was necessary to protect Noah. But the document transferred control of the holding company to a private entity.””

I read the name of the entity.

It was registered under a company called Whitmore Capital.

Daniel's company.

My father slowly lowered the paper.

“He stole my wife's company.””

Olivia shook her head.

“No. He stole yours, too.””

I plugged the flash drive into my laptop.

There was one audio file.

The date was nine years old.

I pressed play.

Static crackled through the speakers.

Then Daniel's voice emerged.

“Laura, you need to understand that this is already done.””

My mother's voice answered.

“You forged Marcus's signature.””

Daniel laughed.

“He signed it himself.””

“He didn't know what he was signing.””

“That isn't my problem.””

Then came a sound.

A chair scraping.

My mother's voice became sharper.

“If anything happens to me, Ethan will know.””

Daniel replied quietly.

“Ethan won't know anything. And Noah will never come back.””

I stopped breathing.

Then Daniel said something that made my father grip the table.

“Because by the time they find out who really owns Cole Development, both boys will have nothing.””

The recording continued.

My mother's next words were almost a whisper.

“You've already taken enough from me.””

Daniel answered.

“Not yet.””

The file ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Olivia reached into her handbag one final time.

She removed a folded newspaper clipping.

The headline read:

*LOCAL WOMAN DIES AFTER UNEXPECTED MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS.*

Beneath the headline was my mother's photograph.

Olivia pointed to the article.

“Look at the date.””

I did.

Then I noticed the name of the attending physician.

Dr. Robert Whitmore.

Daniel's older brother.

My father stared at the clipping.

May you like

And suddenly, the possibility that my mother's death had been engineered no longer seemed like a desperate theory.

It looked like a family operation.
