Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn't Hers

My father held the adoption form as if it were something dangerous.

I stood across the desk, waiting for him to explain.

“Dad, why is there an adoption document with my name on it?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

“You signed it.””

“I didn't sign this.””

I pointed at the signature.

“That's your name.””

“Yes. But that's not my handwriting.””

He pulled a magnifying glass from the drawer and examined the document.

Then he turned it over.

There was a stamp from a family court dated twenty-six years earlier.

My father had married my mother eleven years before I was born. The date on the document was three months before my birth.

It was possible that the adoption paperwork had been prepared before I arrived.

But why?

“Maybe you were adopted,” I said.

Marcus looked up.

“No.””

“How can you be certain?””

“Because I was there when you were born.””

I leaned against the desk.

“Then explain this.””

He didn't.

I opened the folder again and found a hospital discharge form.

The mother's name was Laura Cole.

The baby's name was Ethan.

But beneath the discharge information was a handwritten note.

*Biological mother: confidential.*

I looked at my father.

“Why would Mom's name be listed if she wasn't my biological mother?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

I pulled out my phone and called the hospital's records department.

Rebecca Shaw answered.

I explained that we had discovered an adoption document and asked whether the archived maternity file contained any additional information.

She requested the reference number.

I read it aloud.

There was a pause.

“Mr. Cole, I can confirm that the file contains a sealed amendment.””

“What kind of amendment?””

“A correction to the original birth registration.””

“Can you tell me what was corrected?””

“Not without the required authorization. But I can tell you the amendment was filed approximately three weeks after the birth.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Was there something unusual about my birth?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Laura told me everything went well.””

Rebecca continued.

“There is also a notation that the original birth record was replaced following a court order.””

My father closed his eyes.

“Who requested the order?””

“I can't disclose that by phone.””

I thanked her and ended the call.

The room became silent.

Then my father said something that made me angry.

“Perhaps we should stop.””

I stared at him.

“Stop?””

“Ethan, we don't know what we're dealing with. Vanessa may be trying to manipulate us.””

“She knows something about my birth.””

“She could be lying.””

“Then why are you so afraid of finding out?””

He looked at me.

“Because if Laura concealed something this important, I don't know what else she concealed.””

I shook my head.

“Mom is dead. She can't defend herself. But I can at least find out what happened.””

Marcus looked away.

I picked up the photograph again.

My mother.

Vanessa.

The newborn baby.

And Daniel.

Four people connected by something that had been hidden for decades.

Only one of them was still willing to tell the truth.

And I wasn't sure that person was my father.

At 4:30 p.m., the doorbell rang.

Daniel Whitmore stood outside.

He wore a navy suit and carried a black leather briefcase.

He looked perfectly composed.

“Marcus,” he said, stepping inside.

“We need to talk.””

My father didn't offer him a seat.

“You accessed Laura's safety deposit box.””

Daniel placed his briefcase on the table.

“I was acting under legal authorization.””

“Forged authorization.””

Daniel's expression barely changed.

“That is a serious allegation.””

I placed the adoption document in front of him.

“Explain this.””

He looked down.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“Where did you get that?””

“From my father's study.””

Daniel slowly removed his glasses.

“Ethan, this isn't something you should be involved in.””

I laughed.

“My name is on the document. I think I'm involved.””

He looked at Marcus.

“Can we speak privately?””

“No,” my father replied.

“You can explain everything here.””

Daniel opened his briefcase.

He removed several documents and arranged them neatly.

“Laura was experiencing significant emotional distress before Ethan was born. She was concerned about the child's future.””

My father frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“Your wife believed the child might be taken from her.””

“Taken by whom?””

Daniel ignored the question.

“She asked me to prepare a confidential arrangement.””

“What arrangement?””

“A legal guardianship agreement.””

I pointed at the adoption form.

“This says adoption.””

Daniel adjusted his glasses.

“Some of the original paperwork was amended later.””

“By whom?””

“Your mother.””

I leaned forward.

“Then why is her signature missing?””

Daniel closed the folder.

“I can't answer every question without reviewing the original case file.””

My father slammed his palm against the desk.

“You've had twenty-six years to review it!””

Daniel stood.

“Marcus, I suggest you calm down.””

“Tell me why Vanessa had access to my wife's safety deposit box.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because Laura asked me to give her access.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa was involved in the arrangement.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Was Vanessa my biological mother?””

Daniel didn't answer.

The silence was enough to make my father take a step backward.

I repeated the question.

“Was she?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Vanessa was involved in the birth arrangement. But I don't believe you understand what that means.””

My father stared at him.

“Then explain it.””

Daniel opened his briefcase again.

He removed a photocopy of a hospital record.

The mother's name had been redacted.

But the date matched the photograph.

And there was another name in the document.

*Vanessa Reed.*

My stepmother's maiden name.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why is her name here?””

Daniel exhaled.

“Because she was the biological mother of the child born that day.””

My father grabbed the edge of the desk.

“Then who is that child?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

And before he could answer, the front door opened.

Vanessa walked into the house.

She was carrying a small suitcase.

Her eyes moved from Daniel to the papers.

Then she looked at me.

“You weren't supposed to see those.””

My father stepped between us.

“Vanessa, what did you do?””

She dropped the suitcase.

For the first time since I'd known her, she looked genuinely cornered.

But she didn't deny anything.

Instead, she pointed at the photograph on the desk.

“That's not the whole story, Marcus.””

I stood up.

“Then tell us the rest.””

Vanessa looked at me.

And her next words changed everything.

“Ethan, I'm not the woman who gave birth to you.””

I felt my knees weaken.

She continued.

“I'm the woman who gave birth to the child your mother was trying to protect.””

May you like

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Tell him what happened to his brother.””
