Chapter 6: The Brother Who Disappeared

Nobody moved.

My father stared at Vanessa.

I stared at Daniel.

And Daniel looked as though he wanted the floor to open beneath him.

“What happened to my brother?”” I asked.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

For the first time, she didn't look like the woman who had controlled every room she entered.

She looked old.

Tired.

Afraid.

“His name was Noah,” she whispered.

My father gripped the back of a chair.

“Noah?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He was born six months before Ethan.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The newborn baby in my mother's arms.

The hospital.

The date.

Everything suddenly seemed connected.

“You had a child with someone else?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Then she looked at him.

“Before I met you, I was involved with a man who promised me everything. When I became pregnant, he disappeared.””

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Vanessa, I don't think this is the appropriate time—”

“Shut up, Daniel.””

The room fell silent.

She turned back toward us.

“My family didn't want the scandal. I was young, unmarried, and terrified. My parents arranged for the baby to be placed with another family.””

“Which family?”” I asked.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Laura and Marcus Cole.””

My father staggered backward.

“What?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your mother couldn't have children at the time. She had already suffered two miscarriages. She wanted a baby more than anything.””

Marcus looked as though someone had struck him.

“Laura adopted Noah?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Then why did she give him away?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She didn't.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Laura and I made an arrangement. She would raise Noah as her own child. I would remain out of his life. Daniel prepared the documents.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Then what happened?””

He adjusted his tie.

“The arrangement became complicated.””

My father turned toward him.

“Don't you dare hide behind legal language.””

Daniel sighed.

“Vanessa changed her mind.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“I didn't change my mind. You told me I had no legal right to see my son.””

“You signed the agreement.””

“Because you said it was temporary!””

Daniel looked away.

I stepped between them.

“Where is Noah?””

Neither answered.

I felt my pulse racing.

“Where is my brother?””

Vanessa began crying.

“He was taken away.””

“By whom?””

“Your mother.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense. You said she adopted him.””

“She did. But she discovered something about the arrangement.””

“What?””

Vanessa glanced at Daniel.

He stood abruptly.

“This conversation is over.””

My father moved toward the door.

“Sit down.””

Daniel hesitated.

Marcus pointed at the chair.

“Sit down, or I'll have the police bring you back.””

Daniel sat.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Laura found out that the biological father was not the man I told her about.””

I frowned.

“Who was he?””

She stared at the carpet.

“Daniel.””

The room went completely silent.

My father slowly turned toward his attorney.

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“I was involved with him. He was married at the time. When I became pregnant, he told me to disappear. He promised to support the child financially, but he didn't want anyone to know.””

I stared at Daniel.

“You're my brother's father?””

Daniel didn't answer.

My father looked sick.

“You were friends with my wife. You helped arrange the adoption. And you were the child's biological father?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“I made mistakes.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Mistakes? You sat at my dinner table. You held my son when he was a baby. You helped bury my wife.””

Daniel's expression tightened.

“I never intended for any of this to happen.””

“Where is Noah?”” I demanded.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Laura found out that Daniel had been using the adoption arrangement to control the family. She discovered payments being made from the child's trust.””

My father looked at the documents on the table.

“What payments?””

“Money that was supposed to belong to Noah,” Vanessa said.

“Daniel had been moving it into private accounts.””

Daniel stood again.

“That's a lie.””

Vanessa pointed at him.

“You told me the trust was empty!””

“Enough!””

My father slammed his hand against the desk.

“I'm asking one question. Where is Noah?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Laura found a family willing to take him somewhere safe. She moved him out of state.””

“Where?””

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“I was told he would be protected. Laura said she would contact me when it was safe.””

I felt anger rising.

“You let my brother disappear?””

“I was twenty-two years old!””

“And I'm supposed to feel sorry for you?””

She flinched.

For a moment, I saw the woman who had entered our lives three years earlier, smiling at my father and pretending to care about our family.

Now I understood why she had been so interested in my mother's belongings.

She hadn't simply wanted to erase Laura's memory.

She wanted to erase the evidence that Noah existed.

My father walked toward the window.

“Why did you marry me?””

Vanessa looked up.

“I loved you.””

He turned.

“Don't insult me.””

“I did love you.””

“Then why did you spend years stealing from my family?””

Vanessa's face changed.

“I was trying to find Noah.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She nodded.

“After Laura died, I discovered that the original adoption records had been altered. I knew she had hidden something in the safety deposit box. I thought it would lead me to him.””

“So you staged an assault?””

“I needed you distracted.””

“You framed me!””

“I needed time to search the study.””

My father stepped toward her.

“You could have destroyed my son's life.””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“I didn't think you'd believe him.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked at my father.

He lowered his head.

That was perhaps the most painful part.

She hadn't merely planned the accusation.

She had counted on my father's willingness to doubt me.

Daniel suddenly reached for his briefcase.

I noticed him before anyone else.

“Don't touch that!””

He froze.

My father turned.

“What are you doing?””

Daniel slowly withdrew his hand.

“I'm leaving.””

“No, you're not,” Marcus replied.

He took out his phone and called the police.

But Daniel wasn't looking at my father anymore.

He was looking at me.

“You don't understand, Ethan. If you find Noah, everything Laura did will be exposed.””

I stepped closer.

“What did she do?””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“She didn't simply hide your brother.””

He paused.

“She changed his identity, transferred his inheritance, and left evidence of the entire arrangement in Box 317.””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“Daniel, stop.””

He ignored her.

“Your mother discovered that Noah had inherited more than money. He was the beneficiary of a company worth millions, and she found proof that someone had been trying to steal it.””

My father stared at him.

“What company?””

Daniel gave a humorless smile.

“Cole Development's original holding company.””

Marcus went pale.

“That company was dissolved years ago.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“It was never dissolved. Its ownership was transferred.””

“To whom?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That's what Box 317 will tell you.””

Before anyone could respond, the doorbell rang.

A police officer entered with another officer behind him.

They informed Daniel that they needed him to accompany them for questioning regarding the missing estate records and the suspected falsification of documents.

Daniel protested.

He demanded his lawyer.

But as the officers escorted him toward the front door, he turned back one final time.

“Marcus, ask your son what happened to the inheritance Laura left him.””

My father frowned.

“What inheritance?””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Exactly.””

Then he was gone.

Vanessa remained standing beside the suitcase.

The police asked her to accompany them for a formal interview concerning the staged assault and the missing documents.

She didn't resist.

Before leaving, she looked at me.

“I know you hate me.””

I said nothing.

“But if you find Noah, tell him I never stopped looking.””

I watched her walk out.

I didn't know whether to believe her.

After the police left, my father and I returned to the study.

He sat behind his desk.

I stood beside the bookshelf.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then he opened my mother's letter again.

Please make sure Ethan receives the contents of Box 317 himself.

I looked at the safety deposit receipt.

“Tomorrow, we're opening it.””

Marcus nodded.

“I'll contact the bank's legal department.””

“No lawyers connected to Daniel. No one connected to Vanessa.””

“Agreed.””

I picked up the photograph.

My mother was holding Noah.

She looked happy.

But something in her expression troubled me.

She wasn't simply smiling at her baby.

She was looking directly at the camera, as though she wanted whoever found the photograph to understand something.

I turned it over again.

This time, I noticed a tiny mark beneath the handwritten message.

A second line had been almost completely erased.

I held it beneath the desk lamp.

The faint letters gradually became visible.

Ethan, Noah isn't the only one Daniel lied about.

I read it aloud.

My father looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Before I could answer, my phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from the bank.

The subject line read:

*BOX 317 — ACCESS APPROVAL CONFIRMED.*

I opened it.

There was an appointment confirmation for the following morning.

But beneath the appointment details was a second notification.

*Additional beneficiary identified.*

I scrolled down.

The name appeared in bold.

*MARCUS COLE.*

My father stared at the screen.

“Why am I listed as a beneficiary?””

I looked at him.

“I thought you said Mom left everything to me.””

He shook his head.

“I did.””

Then his phone rang.

It was Rebecca from the bank.

He answered on speaker.

“Mr. Cole,” she said, “I'm sorry to disturb you, but our legal department discovered something unusual while reviewing your wife's original safety deposit agreement.””

“What?””

“The box contains a sealed instruction that must be read before it is opened.””

My father frowned.

“What instruction?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“Mrs. Cole specified that the box could only be opened in the presence of three people.””

“Who?””

“Her husband, her son Ethan, and the person named as the original beneficiary.””

I swallowed.

“Who is the original beneficiary?””

Rebecca paused.

Then she answered.

“According to the document, the original beneficiary is Noah Whitmore.””

My father closed his eyes.

I stared at the photograph of my mother.

Noah wasn't simply my brother.

May you like

He was the person my mother had spent her final days trying to protect.

And somehow, she had made sure that all three of us would have to face the truth together.
