Chapter 8: The Plan to Make His Mother Disappear
Daniel read the message again.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
"Mom, did you ever witness me signing any property documents?""
She shook her head immediately.
"No, sweetheart. I've never signed anything like that.""
"Have you ever been asked to?""
Evelyn hesitated.
Daniel noticed.
"Mom?""
She lowered herself into the chair.
"Vanessa once asked me to sign a paper confirming that I lived here. She said it was for the household insurance.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"When?""
"About two months ago.""
"What did the paper look like?""
"I don't remember exactly. There were several pages. She told me it was routine.""
"Did you sign it?""
Evelyn looked stricken.
"I signed one page. I thought it was what she said it was.""
Daniel sat beside her.
"Did you see my signature on it?""
"No.""
"Did anyone explain what it meant?""
She shook her head.
Vanessa stood in the doorway, her face pale.
"I didn't know what Patricia was planning to do with those documents.""
Daniel looked up.
"Then explain why your mother's associate is sending me a photograph of a property deed with my mother's name on it.""
"I don't know who that man is.""
"What's his name?""
"I only know him as Richard.""
"Richard what?""
"Mom never told me his surname.""
Daniel took out his phone and photographed the message, including the number it came from.
He sent everything to Rebecca.
Then he asked Vanessa to sit down.
She remained standing.
"Please," he said.
"For once, stop trying to control how this conversation goes and tell me the truth.""
Vanessa slowly sat opposite him.
Daniel placed the phone between them.
"Why did you need my mother to disappear before the transfer could be completed?""
Vanessa stared at the message.
"I never said that.""
"Someone connected to your mother believes you did.""
"He's lying.""
"Then tell me what happened.""
She pressed her palms against her knees.
"Patricia said the house was worth more than the mortgage. She thought it would be possible to arrange financing using the equity. When the first loan came through, she said we could invest it and pay everything back before you noticed.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"You keep saying we. I never agreed to any of this.""
"I know.""
"Then stop including me in your decisions.""
Vanessa began crying again.
"Patricia told me there was another problem. She said the lender wanted proof that everyone living in the property understood the arrangement.""
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"That's why you asked Mom to sign the paper?""
Vanessa nodded.
"What did you tell her?""
"That it was for insurance.""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Daniel felt his anger give way to a painful, exhausted disbelief.
"You used her trust to get a signature on a document you deliberately misrepresented.""
"I didn't know it was a deed!""
"Did you read it?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Did you read the document before asking her to sign?""
Her eyes filled.
"Yes.""
Daniel stood.
"Then you knew.""
"I knew there were legal terms. I didn't understand all of them.""
"But you understood enough to hide the paperwork from me.""
Vanessa looked at the floor.
Daniel walked to the window.
Outside, the street was quiet. A neighbor's porch light illuminated the sidewalk where Ethan used to ride his bicycle after school.
It was an ordinary night.
That was the hardest part.
The world hadn't changed its rhythm, even though Daniel's understanding of his own family had collapsed.
Behind him, Evelyn spoke softly.
"Daniel, I think I should tell you something.""
He turned.
She was holding her wedding photograph in both hands.
"When your father was dying, he made me promise to protect this family.""
Daniel approached her.
"Mom, you don't have to protect anyone from the truth.""
"I know.""
She took a breath.
"But I kept quiet because I thought Vanessa was struggling. I heard her talking to Patricia on the phone several times. They discussed money, and sometimes they mentioned me.""
Vanessa lifted her head.
"Why didn't you tell me you were listening?""
Evelyn looked at her sadly.
"Because I wasn't trying to listen. I was walking past the kitchen.""
"What did you hear?"" Daniel asked.
Evelyn's fingers tightened around the photograph.
"Your mother-in-law said that once the house was secured, there would be no reason for me to stay here. Vanessa told her you would resist if they asked you directly.""
Daniel felt cold.
"What else?""
Evelyn swallowed.
"Patricia said I could be moved into a facility. She said that if I objected, they could tell the doctors I was confused and unable to make decisions for myself.""
Vanessa jumped to her feet.
"That isn't what she meant!""
Evelyn flinched.
Daniel stepped between them.
"Sit down, Vanessa.""
She stared at him.
"You're not even giving me a chance to explain!""
"I've given you chances all night.""
Vanessa's voice broke.
"Mom said the facility would be better for Evelyn! She said she needed professional care, and that we couldn't keep managing everything ourselves.""
Daniel looked at his mother.
"Did you ever ask to move?""
"No.""
"Did you ever ask for professional care?""
"I asked for help with my arthritis. That's all.""
Vanessa sank back into her chair.
For the first time, she looked less angry than frightened.
"Patricia said we could make this easier for everyone.""
Daniel shook his head.
"By taking my mother's money, using my identity, and trying to force her out of her home?""
"I never wanted to force her!""
"Then why did you tell her I wanted her gone?""
Vanessa covered her face.
She had no answer.
Daniel returned to the desk and began saving copies of every recording, message, and document. He created a separate folder and sent the files to Rebecca.
Then he called the unknown number.
A man answered.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Who are you?""
"My name is Richard Bell. I work with Patricia on property investments.""
"Did you send me that photograph?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
A pause.
"Because I was told the house transfer was already agreed upon, and I discovered inconsistencies in the paperwork.""
Daniel gripped the phone.
"What inconsistencies?""
"The signature on the deed appears to have been copied from another document. I can't tell you how it happened, but I raised the issue with Patricia.""
"And what did she say?""
"She said the family had agreed to the arrangement and that the remaining resident would be relocated before the final review.""
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"The remaining resident?""
"Your mother.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Did Patricia tell you that my mother had agreed to leave?""
"She said your wife was handling it.""
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
She looked as if she might collapse.
"Can you send the original documents to my solicitor?""
"I can provide copies of the material I have. The originals are currently with Patricia.""
"Why did you wait until tonight to contact me?""
Richard hesitated.
"Because I thought this was a family transaction. After I saw the authorization documents, I realized I could be implicated if I ignored the discrepancies.""
Daniel's voice hardened.
"Then cooperate fully with the investigation.""
"I intend to.""
Richard sent a secure email while they were still speaking.
Daniel opened the attachment.
It contained a draft property transfer, a copy of the loan application, and a series of messages between Patricia and an unidentified contact.
He opened the messages.
One read:
Once Daniel signs, the property will be secured.
Another said:
He won't sign. Vanessa says he is too attached to the house.
The reply was chillingly simple.
Then use the existing signature.
Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone.
He opened the next message.
What about Evelyn?
Patricia had answered:
She won't be an obstacle for long.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Vanessa was staring at him.
"What did you see?""
He turned the screen toward her.
She read the messages.
Then she began shaking her head.
"No. No, Mom wouldn't—"
She stopped.
Daniel watched the realization spread across her face.
Her mother had not merely borrowed money or hidden documents.
She had been planning to take the house, using whatever means necessary to get it.
And Vanessa had helped her.
Daniel looked at his wife.
"Did you know your mother planned to use my signature without my permission?""
Vanessa pressed her hands against her mouth.
"I knew she wanted the house.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
"I thought she was going to refinance it. I thought we'd get the money back and keep living here.""
"Then why did you agree to have my mother moved?""
Vanessa whispered, "Because Mom said that if Evelyn stayed, she could challenge the arrangement.""
Daniel stared at her.
"So you helped your mother steal our house because my mother might object.""
Vanessa broke down completely.
"I didn't think it would go this far!""
Daniel turned away.
His solicitor had warned him not to make assumptions before the documents were examined. But he no longer needed to guess whether his wife had betrayed him.
He had watched her do it on camera.
He had heard her admit it.
And now he had evidence that the plan involved removing Evelyn from the home before she could object.
A new message arrived from Richard.
*There is one more document you need to see. Patricia told the lender that Evelyn had already agreed to move into residential care. The application includes a signed statement confirming it.*
Daniel opened the attachment.
The statement bore Evelyn's name.
It claimed that she had voluntarily agreed to leave the property and would not contest the transfer.
At the bottom was a signature.
It looked like hers.
Evelyn stared at it.
Then she began to cry.
"I never wrote that.""
Daniel held her hand.
"I believe you, Mom.""
She shook her head.
"Why would anyone do this?""
He had no comforting answer.
But as he examined the statement, he noticed a date in the top corner.
It was dated two weeks earlier.
On that exact day, Daniel had been away on a business trip.
And according to the camera footage, Patricia had spent nearly an hour alone in Evelyn's bedroom.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"What happened that afternoon?""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Then she whispered, "Mom brought a doctor to the house.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What doctor?""
"She said he was there to evaluate Evelyn.""
"Did my mother agree to that?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
Daniel felt his pulse hammering.
"Then why was he here?""
May you like
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
"Because Mom wanted a medical statement saying Evelyn couldn't make decisions for herself.""
